Poll: What sport(s) should the University of New Mexico cut in order to balance its athletic budget?

I agree with the last response -- time to rip off the bandage but then show the gaping wounds in the budget inflicted by the expenses of football. Eliminate football and there are no financial issues. If UNM was annually competitive, like say Michigan, but we aren't and only rarely have been. Who cares if UNM is the Mountain West -- join a conference that doesn't require football and we'll be just fine in the future.

UNM continues to be a low budget sorry ass excuse for a university. Instead of cutting college sports why don’t they reduce coaches and top administrator pay. Some of these folks are paid way beyond their actual worth.

Come on Football team, be contributors. You take and take but are "too good" to give back.
You have the best training facilities than all the other sports, and you need a new one?
You're overall grades suck compared to the other sports, and you are too good to work hard off the field?
Your so entitled that you don't have to volunteer in the community like the other sports do?
Amazing how readers want to cut all the other sports where those student athletes actually contribute in the classroom, in the community and do this with minimum scholarships (1 to 5 max).
Why not give up a couple of those football scholarships (like the other sports have) to help fix the problem.
Or is football that one sibling who drains their parents bank account and keeps looking for more while the others are trying to grow up and be contributors in society.
Shame on the Regents for not doing their job for the past 10 years. Now you want to punish the kids. Many residence think why not cut all of sports. Sure, why not become a big community college without bringing in out of state dollars to support a strapped state already.

If you take a look at MWC sports and how UNM lines up with the other schools, there are some sports such as men's baseball and skiing that are least supported or not at all. If UNM feels they "have to" stay in the MWC, then these are the two sports which cost more to operate.
Best thought drop football, move to another D1 conference such as the WAC, the Summit League. These are more competitive league for UNM at this time.

Not only does football have the greatest financial cost to UNM, it also takes the greatest toll on its players in terms of career ending, life changing, or even life ending injuries. Further, those injuries can also result in long term costs to UNM to pay the costs associated with football injuries that impair the student from living a normal life.

Fairly tough decision. The only must keeps are men football and men basketball as those bring in big tv rights and revenue sharing.

Two women's sports should be cut. Not counting the coed skiing sport, women have 2 more sports than men so cut two women's sports to make it 8 sports a-piece per sex.

After that, maybe cut some of the lower budget sports because you can probably get local businesses to donate things in support of the sport or get fans of that sport to contribute to a GoFundMe or whatever to help fund that sport's other needs each season.

Football is a drain on all the other sports programs. It hurts the school financially, always has, always will.

    Worse, damages the University's reputation.

Totally unpopular, as proven by attendance Vs budget. Years of deceit by wildly overpaid coaches and directors.

Students are usually personally athletic and they typically play healthy sports on their own (tennis, skiing, bikes etc etc etc), but none attend LOBO games.

I for one am becoming increasing weary of the budget issues coming up every year at UNM. It is time to make some serious cuts and see where that lands for the Lobos.
First and foremost there can't be any mention of cutting Lobo Football. Before all the screaming check with the Mountain West requirements before going down that road. With that said, let the list begin.
    Sports that must remain:
    Men's
    1 Football
    2 Basketball
    3 Baseball
    4 Soccer

    Woman's
Start by picking the sports that are most competitive, popular, and then once title 9 requirement are met, cut all remaining sports.

If UNM athletics remain in the red drop men's sports starting with 4 and 3. This is harsh but it will allow UNM to remain in the MWC and be competitive. The "can" must not be kicked down the road again. UNM is at the cross roads and short of changing NCAA divisions this is probably the best avenue to take.

Sad, very sad but it is time to rip off that band-aid!
