What Labour stands for
The four principles on which Socialism is based are Freedom, Equality, Community and Democracy.
From its first election programme in 1920 to the present day, these principles have been at the centre of the policies which the Labour Party has offered to the Irish people. These are the values which have ruled our major campaigns and our political activity whether in opposition or in Government.

Well done Eamon Gilmore. You put the case very well on Questions and Answers tonight! I belive that everyone over 70 should be given to a medical card, to encourage them to attend their doctor when they are worried about their health. It makes sense from a public health point of view and will reduce pressure on our hospitals. There are plenty of ways to tax the wealthy. These are not the people to be hit by the Government medical card move. The people who will suffer are the ordinary PAYE workers who have saved to have a bit of dignity in their old age.
Classic downfall scenario - Fianna Fail today - power corrupts etc. They've hung themselves - Fianna Fail are blind and corrupt. I give them a week and they'll be gone. Michael r.

I don't understand the Labour Party's stance on this issue. Joan Burton has been highly critical of the senior management of the major banks, claiming that heads should roll, etc. This seems sensible and in line with developments in other countries, particularly the UK. However, in the same breath, Labour appears determined that these same people - who, in the party's own estimation are obscenely wealthy - should be entitled to free medical cards on reaching the age of 70. Could you please explain?

The most vunerable in society are to pay for the mismanagement of the economy and greed of bankers and property speculators. Mary Harney is a disaster as Minister for Halth and needs to resign. Government backbenchers need to stand up and be counted.
