My mom lives in bow view manor a long term care facility and they have a bike lane in front it is very dangerous as there seems to be no respect for the elderly people as they come and go from the facility l have come close to being hit by a cyclists severally times !

Nothing wrong with bike lanes in places where they'll be used enough to be justified. I've been to many cities in Europe where they make a lot of sense. I don't believe they make as much sense in Calgary and instead only serve to overload other infrastructure.

You can argue chicken or egg, and say that people don't ride bikes because they have no lanes. My counter to that is that other than die-hard bike riders, there will be few people using bike lanes when it's -40 out. There will be few people using bike lanes when there's a pile of snow. There will be few people using bike lanes downtown when they first have to get out of their communities (which frequently involves large hills) to do so.

It works in other places around the world for various reasons. Doesn't mean that we need for it to work in Calgary.

Further to that, I also agree with Bob Merchant. If you're going to push these underused bike lanes down my throat, at least build them properly so that they're intuitive l

Why are we catering to a group that doesn't believe road laws apply to them

I wholeheartedly agree with Bob Merchant. I’m embarrassed to take my visitors downtown now with the haphazard structures and confusing signage posing as bike lanes. For a supposedly sophisticated city it’s a poor show.

The main problem with the current bike lanes is how poorly done the design has been. The concepts used are ugly, detract from the streetscape, are inconsistently applied, are illogical, and add more conflicts with other car and pedestrian traffic than they solve. The city should see how Munich, also a winter city, incorporates the bike lanes in a much more sensitive and logical, and attractive way. And Munich has a lot more bike users.
The lanes should be adjacent to pedestrians, on sidewalks but to the curb side, and free flowing, following pedestrian lights, not cars' lights and especially not their own set of lights delaying other traffic. Just a poor overwrought design that does not add to the City aesthetic environment.
