Michelle, these are based on Minstrels. These "talented black artists" they were based off were comedy acts ridiculing black people either as white people dressed in black face or black people being told to act in a certain way by other whites.
WIKI QUOTE: "The minstrel show, or minstrelsy, was an American form of entertainment developed in the early 19th century. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music performances that mocked people specifically of African descent. The shows were performed by Caucasians in make-up or blackface for the purpose of playing the role of black people. There were also some African-American performers and all-black minstrel groups that formed and toured under the direction of white people."

There is literally nothing to be proud of by having one. Its just old british pride not wanting to change with the times.

Don't buy one if you don't like them BUT don't stop those that think there is nothing wrong in buying one from doing so. We have too.many nosey parkers who want to impose their narrow minded views on the rest of us. Tell them to clear off.

I was born in England and absolutely remember the Golliwog dolls. We got them by sending in the labels of a particular jam, sorry not sure of the name of the jam I was only 5 years old, but they were certainly not in any way meant to be racist, they were actually an honor to get one, they represented the very talented black artists of the time and were very much sought after. I may have just been a child but I know exactly how much I loved these dancer, mimes, and all types of artists they were and was so excited and honored to have got one. So much so that my friend whom is also from England found a shop here in Canada that sells all sorts of English memorabilia including the golliwog. She new how much I loved mine as a child as I had told her about it and was so happy just to have someone know what I was talking about as Canadians have no idea what they are unless they were born in England and moved here, she surprised me on my birthday with a keychain golliwog. I still love and admire who they represented.....and that is the wonderful ARTISTS THAT THEY WERE absolutely not a racist doll to me my family and anyone else I knew who had them. And I'm so happy to have one today and honored. I love my GOLLIWOG!!!!!!!!
