Readers to this blog need to understand that Cynthia G is a consummate story teller. She lies about Vision Forum, Doug Phillips and Matt Chancey and has been in the business of doing such for years. But the biggest lie is about herself. Not only has Cynthia G expressed her sympathy for homosexual rights, but She is a woman who has advanced the cause of white supremacists herself by supporting their internet attacks on Vision Forum--an organization which is known for opposing white seperatism and racial bigotry. Furthermore, she has sided with the radical leftist, pro-Marxist, pro-homosexual Southern Poverty Center. Her comments about Matt, Doug Phillips and Vision Forum are pure lies. As to her own work helping the Kinist cause of white supremacism, she is known far and wide for her role with them in a conspiracy to attack pastors and ministries. This is a dishonest woman who has brought her poison to this web site as she has elsewhere.

    love you too, Mrs. G!

    Peace. - Caleb

  • Mrs. G - 15 years ago

"The Chancey Brood not only welcomes discourse, and fellowship with those of other 'races', they would lovingly welcome a person of a different hue as a family member, quite unlike R.L. Dabney." So it doesn't bother you, sir, when the Chanceys idolize, defend, and quote Dabney, as Jennie does here: (http://www.ladiesagainstfeminism.com/artman/publish/Hot_Button_Issues_21/Woe_to_My_people1003377.shtml)? And it doesn't bother you that Matt is such close friends with Doug Phillips, who publishes the book "Robert Lewis Dabney: The Prophet Speaks"? And it doesn't bother you that Jennie's book "Passionate Housewives" is published by that same man? I'm afraid I don't understand.

  • Mrs. G - 15 years ago

"My brother Matt has some very upside-down views that I don't even pretend to understand..." Well, until you DO understand them, Caleb, perhaps you should refrain from commenting on them. Some of us understand them all too well.

A comment from a Black Man (Although I identify myself as a Christian Man):

Matthew & Jennie Chancey are dear, trustworthy and loyal friends of my entire family. Matt's leadership in the home and Jennie's sincere affection for her husband and children are examples to be emulated not disparaged. Therefore, when speech is slanderous and without restraint concerning the Chancey's in particular, you have chosen to bolster a culture bent on destroying the family by attacking those who stand for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. (How difficult it is for those egalitarians to take the Scripture at its word? They resort to gross mischaracterizations of false-chauvinism to justify their assault on Men who Lead.) The Black Community -- although I pray Christians would eventually unite under One Banner (II Cor 5.16-17) -- needs to embrace and be encouraged by more model families, like the Chanceys.

As it pertains to "racism"... Not a stitch of it is found in the Chancey family. The Chancey Brood not only welcomes discourse, and fellowship with those of other "races", they would lovingly welcome a person of a different hue as a family member, quite unlike R.L. Dabney. (Admittedly, I not only greatly disagree with Dabney who was a racist, I would warn unsuspecting readers to divorce themselves from his philosophy on "race", which undoubtedly permeates his biblical exegesis and hermeneutic.)

Conclusively speaking... Matt Chancey receives my vote. More importantly, Matt & Jennie Chancey have earned my trust and brotherhood.

  • Cynthia Gee - 15 years ago

Google "henty racism" and you'll get PAGES of referrals, most of which have nothing to do with "blogs that disparage Chancey".
Cettainly Henty was racist, but he can be excused somewhat, because MOST people were racist back then. Henty was a great story teller, however, and great modern versions of his books are available with the objectionable content removed. What is inexcusable is that any Christian parent today would read the OLD versions of Henty's books to their children..... and VisionForum makes no qualms about advertising the fact that the Henty storybooks they sell are true to the old, racist wording in Henty's original works. But, what can we expect from people who pal around with white supremacists and secessionists, seekuing their political support and their business?

I can't believe that there is so much argument about Matt Chancey. Now, I voted for Jared Alexander Patchin, but I have to throw in my 2 cents here:
to say that Old Spice will receive backlash because the majority of people voting chose Matt Chancey is ridiculous!
Old Spice doesn't vote for their own candidates! And what right does Old Spice have to exclude a candidate because of his religious views? None, under American law! Don't we live in America? Isn't Christianity (no matter how "strict" or "cultish" it seems to others who like to sling mud) protected from persecution under the Constitution? And isn't it up to a family to decide what they believe? Obviously Matt does not oppress his wife, since she believes the way he does and is happy enough to nominate him for this contest!
How can anyone think it makes sense to punish Old Spice by not buying their product just because a candidate you dislike won a popularity contest? That's like refusing to watch TV because your favorite for American Idol didn't win. Obviously, if your favorite candidate doesn't win, he's not everybody else's favorite!
Take this contest for what it is: a popularity contest open to a vast and unpredictable public. No matter who wins, can't you just be happy for them and go on living? Does Old Spice suddenly become a poor-quality product because their contest had results you didn't like?
    Get real, people.

***Please excuse all grammatical and spelling errors...two of the many things I suck at in life***

...reading this comment section is actually quite funny. My brother Matt has some very upside-down views that I don't even pretend to understand, and honestly I'm not really interested in defending his "internet honor". However, for those of you reading this comment board saying "What the hell are these people talking about?!", I offer you this summary:

    1) Matt is not a part of a cult. I can understand how people could misunderstand this: 8 kids, homeschooled, lives in the country, goes to a small church, etc., but it is not a cult. It is however, by many peoples standards, very strange. I mean who has eight kids?! Well, Matt & Jennie do...and Jon & Kate on TLC.

    2) Matt would never force his religion on another person. Where he gets into trouble, is when people want him to be honest. "What do you think about _____?" He'll tell you, and it will sound insane! However, if you give him 1 hour of your time after the question, you probably won't agree with him, but you will understand where he's coming from.

    3) Matt is in the Sudan right now risking his life, and he is getting paid to be there.

"WHAT?!?! He's not going out of charity!"

No, he's going because it's his job...and guess what: he loves his job. He loves helping people, loving people, sitting and talking with people, and if he can support his wife and 8 KIDS while doing that, then I offer that he is not uncharitable, he is a caring husband, father, friend, and businessman.

    4) Matt smokes a pipe and cigars. Booyah!

If you want to vote for Matt, by all means do. If you don't want to, please don't.

    Peace. - Caleb

Please help! I’ve been following the Man of the Year contest and Matthew Chancey has now taken a commanding lead. A slew of blogs, including Doug Phillips Vision Forum blog, decided to wait until a day before the contest ends to suddenly link to the contest, and thus keep anyone from catching up. The Chanceys and their supporters have hijacked the contest are using it as a way to promote their crazy views. Please vote for Howie Farmer, and get everyone you know to link to the contest! It ends at midnight tonight!

Yes, Sandy– they all did it within HOURS of each other. Life In a Shoe, Doug’s Blog, Buried Treasure, Persevero, RC Sproul, etc........
Doug (Phillips) even had his eldest CHILD Joshua put it up on his board for CHILDREN, "Ballantyne the Brave". “Joshua” writes, “Mr. Chancey (as David) [is] standing up against the Goliath of effeminate men and preparing to chop off the head of that monster.” Lovely."

    wow, you christians are nuts.

  • factcheck - 15 years ago

This will be very interesting when Matt Chancey wins and he (and how he won)is investigated. I think he is so much of a self-promoter he wants the attention. BUT The Emperor has no clothes.
Hopefully it won't be like my Grandpa. He used Old Spice instead of taking a shower.

  • Rick Blevins - 15 years ago

Very interesting, Brett. Also interesting how just yesterday Matt Chancey was in second place and behind by almost 700 votes. In less than 24 hours he's ZOOOOOOOMED way ahead of Howie Farmer. Funny how those things happen. To quote Chicago's Mayor Richard J. Daley, "Vote early and vote often." The internet has made cheating easier than ever. Just remember to delete your cookies.

  • wamba - 15 years ago

I've met Matt C. and found him to be a great fella.

  • Ed Burg - 15 years ago

I challenge any of you who have made derogatory comments relating to Matt Chancey to step forward here in the comments and provide for the rest of us the depth of your experience at working with or befriending Matt. Most, if not all of you making comments about Matt, are ignorant of both who he really is and his affiliation back to Vision Forum.

Speaking as someone who does know Matt, I can tell you that he is incredibly deserving of the title he has been nominated for. Undoubtedly, this is probably true for many of the men nominated here. He is a terrific gentleman, very considerate of others and an example to many who call themselves Christians (in the truest sense of the word).

  • Ed Burg - 15 years ago

Gosh Mrs. G.... you're really not being tolerant of other people's point of view. Can you practice what you preach?

    Dear Concerned,

Racist men rarely fly halfway across the world to help people of other races being persecuted. Matt Chancey is a godly man who deserves your respect if not your vote.

    Eric

  • Concerned - 15 years ago

    George,

We are not a bunch of crazies and we do not all know each other. This cult-like organization that Chancey is a part of markets it stuff to homeschoolers across the nation. There are about 1.5 million homeschoolers in the nation and the majority of us are famliar this and now leary of this group. They are extreme radicalists who believe in all sorts of weird practices. Many homeschoolers are trying to bar this group from appearing at conferences to attempt to get people to conform to their lifestyle.

If you are not a homeschooler you will not be aware of this group so it may seem like a small few are attacking this man. If you are a homeschooler you may very well think of them like the rest of the world thinks of the FLDS cult in Texas (Warren Jeffs) it is that kind of creepy!!! If you don't believe me head on over to their website www.visionforumministries.org and see for yourself!!!!!

  • I Wanna Be Like Matt - 15 years ago

That's right George! If people don't like racism they need to shut the heck up about it.

"I love the way he is posing like a slave master with his cigar while the African's stand around their "leader."" I love that too! Vote for Matthew L. Chancey.

Is there anything as manly as traveling to Africa to lord it over inferiors and the lower classes? What could be more manly than lording it over Africans and uppity women and homos? Vote for Matt Chancey! What a role model. He's the kind of man I hope to be some day.

  • Geroge - 15 years ago

People need to shut the heck up about G.A. Henty. He was a 19th Century British writer who wrote stories for young boys. And yes he, like most 19th Century men, was an imperialist and they viewed Africans and other "natives" in the British Empire as inferior. Ever read or see the film version of "The Jungle Book?" That was written by one of Henty's contemporaries Rudyard Kipling. Like Henty, he had inappropriate views of blacks and other races, too. But people quote Kipling all the time without any problems, especially his poem "If."

What if one of the contestants said his favorite book was "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?" Would he be disqualified? Just like Henty, Mark Twain used horrible despicable racist stereotypes.

I don't know who this Chancey guy is, but it looks like he has a bunch of crazies who are trying to us any dumb ass argument to bring him down. Google "GA Henty racist" and the only things you'll get are links to blogs that have disparaged Chancey. Hmmmm.... the only people that seem to have a problem with Henty being a racist are the same people that have a problem with Chancey.

  • Mrs. G. - 15 years ago

And look at this quote from the Vision Forum website:

"Homosexuality is not a victimless crime. It is a cruel moral perversion that wreaks moral, physical and spiritual havoc on men, women, children, families and institutions. The Bible makes no distinction between homosexuals, pedophiles, bestials and rapists. All are criminals, the toleration of which brings judgment on the land and devastation to children."

So, being manly means equating being gay with raping children and having sex with animals? Procter & Gamble need to take control of this situation, instead of hiding behind Art of Manliness and pretending this isn't their contest.

  • Cynthia Gee - 15 years ago

    Did somebody mention Doug Phillips?

"From Doug’s Bookshelf: The Secret Six by Otto Scott is the best book on the evil movement known as abolitionism which funded America’s first terrorist, John Brown, and did so in the name of anti-Christian Unitarianism. Christians should be aware that being anti-slavery and being anti-abolitionist were not incompatable sentiments for both Southerners and Northerners in the years leading up to the Civil War": http://www.visionforum.com/hottopics/blogs/dwp/2003/05/436.aspx

  • Van - 15 years ago

I actually feel bad for this corporation just trying to market a product and having no idea that one individual would generate such controversy. On the other hand, I wonder if they did anything to check out any of the contestants? Reading the bios I see a lot of nice guys that have helped others through real life difficulties – and one guy that raises a red flag for a lot of people. It would be good for someone with journalistic credentials to look into Matt Chancey and this entire controversy. I hope this won’t keep them for honoring guys that really deserve it.

  • Concernced - 15 years ago

    Sorry, that website is www.racistchurches.wordpress.com.

  • Concerned - 15 years ago

As a black american I have some real concerns about Matt Chancey. The cult thing is an issue. The organization that he is involved in Vision Forum, along with it's president Doug Phillips and Matt Chancey, Doug's right hand man, are written up here www.racistchurces.wordpress.com. Please don't take my word for it check it out for yourselves.

Old Spice, if a potential racist wins this thing your PR will be horrible!!!!! I love the way he is posing like a slave master with his cigar while the African's stand around their "leader." Yuck, this man truly feels he is superior.

  • Reba Morrell - 15 years ago

I've just been to one of Matthew L. Chancey's web sites, mrsbinoculars.com Wow! All I can say is that's one hateful mudslinging web site.

So Jeremy, is mrsbinoculars.com some of the fruit of Mr. Chancey's "Christlike behavior"? Is that some of the fruit of his "mercy or forgiveness"?

One thing that Jesus hated as much as anything is hypocrisy, and Matthew Chancey and his friends reek with hypocrisy.

I'm with Ghandi on this one, "I like your Christ, but I don't like your Christians."

  • anna - 15 years ago

Dylan is one of the kindest, most selfless people I have ever met. He deserves to win this competition more than anyone.

  • Jeremy - 15 years ago

It's sad how some of the attackers of Matt Chancey claim to be Christians yet show no fruit of Christlike behavior. They show no mercy or forgiveness. They are lukewarm and need to examine themselves.

  • virgomomwriter - 15 years ago

Again I say, vote for Dylan Barnes. No secrets, no scandals, no controversy, no enemies. Just a good kid who says what he means, means what he says, and does the right thing.

  • Gary Strumman - 15 years ago

I don't personally know any of the candidates, but after reading all the bios I was leaning toward Matt Chancey. It goes to show how misleading a bio can be.

After reading some of the comments here from the "hateful feminists who don't have anything better to do with their time than slander Matt Chancey," I'll have to say that I found their arguments compelling and even scary. Men of the character of Matt Chancey are downright scary. Glad I took the time to read these comments before casting my vote. Especially glad I saw your comment Deb. Too bad Old Spice doesn't give the chance to cast a vote for "Should be removed from consideration from 2008 Art of Manliness Man of the Year."

Elijah said, "You know that you have done something well when you have all the right kind of friends". Not in my book he doesn't. Matt Chancey keeps all the wrong kinds of friends, and that's just another strike against him. If Matt and his friends had their way only men would be permitted to cast a vote here at all, and that would still exclude me since I'm not a "land owning male."

Old Spice needs to think carefully about the implications of what could happen here. Who buys the Old Spice products, especially at this time of year? Isn't it the wives and girlfriends and mothers? I like Old Spice and I use the products, but only because my wife buys them for me. She likes the way they make me smell. If it weren't for her I probably wouldn't think to buy Old Spice. She buys Old Spice products for her Dad and other family members too. If Matt Chancey wins this thing I can easily predict that my wife will be just one of many "hateful feminists" (LOL) who'll start looking for another way of helping us smell the way they want us to.

  • Elijah - 15 years ago

You know that you have done something well when you have all the right kind of friends….You know you have done even better when you have the right kind of enemies. It is one thing to have so many people who love and respect the exceptional manly character that Matt Chancy exhibits, but you know you have reached a whole new level of significance when your enemies literally spend all of there time and energy fanatically obsessed about what you are doing all day. If feminists and effeminates are manically opposed to the manliness of Matt Chancy…I would say his manliness is the proper sort.

Deb…seriously….you link to the “graceindelible” blogspot which in turn links to the ministry watchman…..why don’t try the national inquire next time….you will find their stories much more exciting and needless to say far more accurate.

I don’t doubt that each of the men here are finalist for a good reason, but I cast my vote for Matt because I personally know him to be a man of exceptional honor and character. Whether he wins the competition or not he will have the respect, love and friendship of all those who have benefited from knowing him personally along side so many more who know of him. You are a man of courage and honor and I am proud of you Matt!

  • Steve - 15 years ago

You've got it all wrong, Deb. Only real men have the guts to make enemies, and all great men have had them! It's only gutless, wishy-washy people-pleasers who have no convictions that make no enemies. In fact, I bet you can tell as much about a man by his enemies as you can by his friends. And by that token, I think Matthew is looking better and better by the day.

  • Deb Ruten - 15 years ago

I'm shocked by what I've found online about Matt Chancey. His wife parades his charity work in Africa. Thank you Mrs. Chancey for mentioning it. But from what I've read online it sounds like he's making a lot of money off his "charity." A web search on Matt Chancey and Sudan turns up all kinds of awful things. Matt Chancey is a director of Persecution Project, and a search on that name pulls up some of the most horrifying articles I've ever seen. Click on my name above for a link to one of those articles.

Matt Chancey's boss is Brad Phillips, and he's the brother of Doug Phillips (his Vision Forum business was commented on above). It's alleged that Brad Phillips stole a master video about Sudan and resold it, making hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits that weren't his. Worse yet the unauthorized release of the film resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent people.

There's this and so many other serious accusations against Matt Chancey. Even if none of it were true it's obvious he's got a lot of enemies, and I don't think it's just his conservative Christian values that have made him so many enemies. Most of the people who have publicly accused him appear to also be conservative Christians, so this isn't just a squabble over values. What has Matt Chancey done to make so many enemies? Is it "manly" to make so many enemies? Shouldn't a manly man be a man of peace? Is this the kind of man Old Spice wants representing "Manliness" for their company? It makes me ill to think he might actually win this contest. Even "runner up" would be too good for him.

Also, another reminder keep the discussion here civil and on topic.

  • Brett McKay - 15 years ago

If you haven't done so yet, please remember to vote in the 2008 Art of Manliness Man of the Year Contest. Deadline to vote is Sunday night, so you have three short days left. Make sure to check out the nominees' essays on the Official Voting Page. While the winner isn't going to become a spokesperson for Old Spice, Old Spice was kind enough to provide a $2,000 cash prize along with an assortment of Old Spice products for the Man of the Year.

We'd also like to remind our readers and all visitors to the site that The Art of Manliness is for ALL men. Our readers have diverse backgrounds and we welcome that on the site. The nominees for the Man of the Year represent the diversity of men who read the site. It is however important to note they do not necessarily represent the beliefs or views of The Art of Manliness or Old Spice. Old Spice did not play an active role in screening these entries. They were simply kind enough to provide the winning prize and support our site.

The finalists were selected according to the following criteria:

    * Looks out for and is loyal to his friends and family.
    * Does the right thing, even when it's not convenient.
    * Is proficient in the manly arts.
    * Serves and gives back to his community.
    * Sacrifices for the good of others.
    * Works hard and never complains.
    * Has a confident swagger, but isn't a pompous jerk.
    * Has a sense of humor but doesn't cut people down.
    * Embraces instead of shirks responsibility

It was not possible, or even desirable to quiz each candidate about their political, religious, and social views. While we selected the finalists, the winner will be determined by you, the reader. If you don't support a particular candidate's message, you should vote for those you do believe in and spread the word about that candidate. The contest is not about who AoM or Old Spice believes should be the winner, but who the public determines should be the 2008 Man of the Year.

  • Jack - 15 years ago

So there you go. It's just one happy feud between a bunch of Christians who have nothing better to do than write about how bad each other suck. Yes, Matt Chancey has very some questionable beliefs, but he's not the baby killer that some on this board put him to be.

  • Jack - 15 years ago

So, all these accusations got me curious about Mr. Chancey and his critics. I've followed the links, and it just looks like some personal squabble that has been going on for a couple of years has been transferred over to this poll. For those of you who are curious of what's going on (or even care), here's the run down: Chancey belonged to a church congregation headed by a man named Doug Phillips. Phillips is the president of a business called "Vision Forum." From what I gather they're really big among the Christian Home school types. Anyways, this congregation is part of a branch of Protestantism called "Reconstructionist Christianity." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Reconstructionism It's very conservative. They believe a person's life should be guided exactly by the Bible. So like many Christian faiths, they think homosexuality and abortion is a sing. Bible says it is so it. Where they take things a step further is their approach to family organization and the role of women. Unlike most Christian churches who have pretty much given up on the idea patriarchy, Christian Reconstructionists are big supporters of patriarchy, because, well it's biblical. Chancey's wife, Jennie Chancey has a blog dedicated to that idea called "Ladies against Feminism." Now before people start saying "These people are sick sexist, misogynistic, weirdos," go read the damn site yourself. While I don't agree with Mrs. Chancey about what a woman's role should be, she does raises several valid points on how feminism has really screwed things up in this country. The articles are actually very well written. Of course, die hard liberals are going to scream "intolerance! intolerance!" if anybody dares speak against feminism. (I love how liberals talk about tolerance, but as soon as you disagree with you, you're automatically a hateful person.) Some also argue that Christian reconstructionist are racists and from what I've read it looks like there's some truth to that. Does that mean Chancey is a racist? No. Why in the hell would he go to Sudan to help black people if was a racist. A racist would say, "Screw black people!" I digress. So, a couple years ago, a couple (named the Epsteins) joined this church headed by Doug Phillips that the Chancey's belong to. Things were going swimmingly for them, until what appears like some ecclesiastical abuse went on by Doug Phillips. You can read about their experience here: http://jensgems.wordpress.com/2006/12/10/the-search-for-the-perfect-church/ They got excommunicated from the church and started writing about their experience annomously on a blog called Ministry Watchman. Matthew Chancey then started a blog called Who is Mrs. Binoculars: http://mrsbinoculars.com/ wherein he makes a case that the person behind Ministry Watchman is actually the wife who was excommunicated from their church and he defends Doug Phillips. Of course, Chancey's side of the story is completely different than this Epstien family. This all happened about 2 years ago. From that time there's been a constant back and forth between these two groups. Accusations of fun stuff like webhacking each other's blog, etc have gone on. Somehow, our friend Cynthia Gee and Ms. Lynn got involved. They're both Christians and it looks like they're apart of the Christian Homeschool crowd. They don't like the Chanceys. At all. They take offense at their view of patriarchy and have written about how they don't like the Chancey's for the past two years on their blogs. http://graceindelible.blogspot.com/ http://cynthiagee.blogspot.com/ It's sort of border line obsession for them. They just love digging up dirt on the Chanceys. Despite being Christian church ladies who think homosexuality and abortion are sin, they'll align with godless homosexual liberals just to hound the Chancey's. Seriously, google Cynthia Gee and matt chancey. I think the lady has a Google Alert on him so she can go and write about how big of jerk he is.

It should be noted that Cynthia Gee did not include that her G.A. Henty quote was not his personal statement, but rather an excerpt from one of his books in which another man is speaking (i.e. third person – “Mr. Goodenough”).

“They are just like children”, Mr Goodenough said. “They are always either laughing or quarrelling.” - http://books.google.com/books?id=KnRWAAAAMAAJ&dq=They%20are%20just%20like%20children.%20They%20are%20always%20either%20laughing%20or%20quarrelling.%20They%20are%20good-natured%20and%20passionate%2C%20indolent%2C%20but%20will%20work%20hard%20for%20a%20time%3B%20clever%20up%20to%20a%20certain%20point%2C%20densely%20stupid%20beyond&pg=PA118&ci=152,613,718,76&source=bookclip - By Sheer Pluck A Tale of the Ashanti War By George Alfred Henty, Gordon Browne

As a matter of fact Cynthia intentionally removed the portion of the quote in which it states that another person is speaking.

I have not read By Sheer Pluck, so I cannot say what the entire book is about or whether the writer is trying to lead readers to believe that one race is superior than another. But nevertheless, it should be noted that Cynthia’s quote is not a direct quote of G.A. Henty speaking of his personal beliefs.

In addition, I wonder if Cynthia Gee repudiates Charles Darwin and his evolutionistic and racist teachings? Or does she endorse and embrace Darwinism (i.e. Evolution)?

“At some future period not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace the savage races throughout the world. At the time the anthropomorphous apes, as Professor Schaaff-liausen has remarked, 18 will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the negro or Australian and the gorilla.” http://books.google.com/books?id=jnTUvf_qEs4C&dq=baboon%2C%20instead%20of%20as%20now%20between%20the%20negro%20or%20Australian%20and%20the%20gorilla.&pg=PA160&ci=145,134,741,228&source=bookclip - The Descent of man and selection in relation to sex By Charles Darwin

You could all vote for Aaron Blue instead. He will be using the prize money to help children at risk in Thailand. He has started an organization to help kids who are Burmese refugees and orphans have a safe place to live where they are not deported back to Burma by the police or caught by slave traders who will force them to work in brothels in Bangkok. As well as helping other refugee communities. See thecharisproject.com for details. The Charis Project is trying right now to support 40 orphaned children from Burma.

The guys in this contest seem like great guys and I'm sure many of them deserve to win. Please keep kids who need to eat and a safe place to sleep in mind when you cast your vote.

  • Anonny - 15 years ago

What I don't understand is why people keep quoting Jennie Chancey as evidence against Matt Chancey. Yes, Jennie nominated Matthew, but we're voting for Matthew, not his wife. While I'm sure he holds similiar beliefs, we really don't have many direct quotes from him on these issues. Further, maligning someone because of their assocuiation with a certain organization is pretty narrow-minded. Someone may be a part of an organization and yet not believe in everything that organization or that organization's founder believes in. It reminds me of the presidential election-just because Obama's pastor said crazy things and Obama knew Bill Ayers, didn't mean that Obama believed the same things that they did.

  • John - 15 years ago

Bill thanks for being the voice of reason.

Brett, cynthia gee and this anon lady, do everything they can to bring down Matt Chancey. They are bitter woman who have disagreed with him on something and therefore have devoted their lives to ruin his. They are children. They show no mercy and have no morals. You can google them and see what they have said about Mr. Chancey and others. They got their feelings hurt and have held a grudge ever since.

Please take their comments off the board. Like Bill said, Mr. Chancey isn't here to defend himself. He's actually defending others who are poor and starving in the Sudan right now. Which is the most unselfish thing you could be doing. But all Cynthia Gee cares about his her bitterness.

  • Bill - 15 years ago

Anon...no man should be subject to these attacks without a fair hearing. Is the documentation true...maybe...maybe not. Does Matt hold views that PG may not like...maybe...maybe not. But to assume that what is written somewhere about a man is true because of a quote from a book, or a website that has something against Matt is juvenile at best and criminal at worst. Right now this is all rumor, gossip and innuendo...nothing more and nothing less. And those who promote it without a fair trial are just as guilty as those who write it.

  • anon - 15 years ago

Bill, is what Cynthia is alleging about Chancey false? I see documentation and URL's in her responses, whereas I see only an ad hominem attack on her person in yours.

I believe that character is indeed an important aspect of manliness and that this information is relevant in picking whom to vote for. And I see hard evidence from the links and documentation that Chancey may hold racist and sexist beliefs, and in my opinion, those are not manly and are totally inappropriate for anyone who will in any way represent Old Spice to the public.

  • Bill - 15 years ago

So, Brett...are you going to shut down the comments or allow these people(at least people like Cynthia Gee who totally disregarded your admonitions...) to malign Matt without a trial? Obviously, she doesn't care what you said about the comments. She only cares about her selfish agenda.

I'm thinking that it's not the kind of manliness this website promotes...

"He’d never sing his own praises, but, as his wife, I never tire of doing so. My husband can read G.A.HENTY'S historical fiction aloud to our children at the dinner table and fix the brakes on a 1964 Ford pickup.".... Jennie Chancey
    .

"They are just like children. They are always either laughing or quarrelling. They are good-natured and passionate, indolent, but will work hard for a time; clever up to a certain point, densely stupid beyond. The intelligence of an average negro is about equal to that of a European child of ten years old. A few, a very few, go beyond this, but these are exceptions, just as Shakespeare was an exception to the ordinary intellect of an Englishman. They are fluent talkers, but their ideas are borrowed. They are absolutely without originality, absolutely without inventive power. Living among white men, their imitative facilities enable them to attain a considerable amount of civilisation. Left alone to their own devices they retrograde into a state little above their native savagery." ---- "By Sheer Pluck" by G.A. Henty

  • Cynthia Gee - 15 years ago

"Just because someone is conservative doesn't make them evil or part of some cult, Ms. Lynn. Grow up and get some perspective."

    No, it doesn't.
But I doubt that Proctor and Gamble want their product to be linked to a spokesperson who teaches that college for women is wrong and that the right to vote should be limited to landowning heads of household, and I REALLY doubt that PG wants Old Spice to be represented by a man who isassociated with people who promote misogyny, racism, antiCatholicism, antiSemitism, and the idea that the South was the real "good guy" in the Civil War.

As has been pointed out, Matt Chancey and his wife Jennie believe that it is wrong for women to vote, hold political office, attend college, or work outside the home. These views are expounded upon at great length on Jennie's website, to which a link has been provided in a previous comment.

MC is also on very intimate terms with Doug Phillips, the president and founder of VisionForum Ministries, a major homeschooling curriculum company. Up until this last election, Phillips' site included an article which preaches that God doesn’t allow women to vote or hold office.

Doug Phillips is described by Matt as being his dear friend and mentor while Phillips in turn praises as his own intellectual hero one of the most virulent racists of the 19th century, Robert L. Dabney. Phillips is the author of the book, "Robert Louis Dabney: The Prophet Speaks":
    http://www.visionforum.com/browse/productdetail.aspx?sc=c2aq1&productid=11297

…and MC is not above political sleight of hand, either, when it will help his ends:
    From the Washington Post:
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/01/AR2005090100803.html

Head-of-household voting, racism, misogyny, political hankypanky....
My Grandpa was conservative, and he was a "manly man" who used Old Spice. I will forever associate its smell with him and the ideals he taught. But these are not the sort of things of which my Grandpa would have approved, and he would never have used a product made by a company whose "Man of the Year" promoted such things as these.

Aw. I'm so sad to see that my nominee only has 3% of the vote. Unfortunately there is no way to tell everyone just how awesome he is...and he does have some amazing competition. This is a great contest. I wish I'd written a longer, more complete essay. Go Jared!

  • Brett McKay - 15 years ago

Please do not turn this poll into a forum to air your political and ideological grievances with a nominee. The contest isn't about politics or ideology. Also, please be civil in your comments. Thanks.

  • Bill - 15 years ago

Maybe it's time for the owners of this contest to disable the comments. A man's character is being unfairly attacked by innuendo, gossip, and rumor without him being able to defend himself...what's so manly about that???

Maybe Howie Farmer should comment and say that he is not about attacking another man to win a contest. Which, given all the fine things said about this man, is probably his position.

    Just a thought...

  • Daniel - 15 years ago

Lol, it looks like there's two people who are crabbing about an issue that doesn't even have anything to do with this poll. They don't care who else wins, just that he doesn't win. Must be a personal grudge. Personally, I think the guy is truly a man's man. Not to tear down anyone else, but anyways.

  • Sarah (not Palin) - 15 years ago

Yeah, backlash from a tiny handful of bitter women who hate Matt Chancey so much they have to make up stuff to trash him with on every forum they can find. I'll bet half of these commentors are the same person.

  • cowen - 15 years ago

Old Spice is going to see some backlash if Matthrew L. Chancey wins!!!

  • James - 15 years ago

Do you really want someone like Matthew Chancey to win this contest? This is a direct quote from a story about his views:

"Matt Chancey, a Republican, is running for president of the Alabama Public Service Commission, and he and his wife Jennie teach that it is a sin (or at the very least, is highly inadvisable) for women to vote, hold political office, attend college, or work outside the home. These views are expounded upon at great length on Jennie Chancey's website,Ladies Against Feminism."

The rest of the article at: http://www.talk2action.org/story/2008/7/9/143031/4518

    Misogyny isn't manly.

  • Andrea - 15 years ago

As regards to Matt Chancey - There is no smoke without fire.

  • Joseph Warren - 15 years ago

Yet another argument for voting for Matt is that he is hated and pursued by radical feminists man-hating blog trolls like some of the ones who have posted on this site who spend their days and nights conspiring on how to defame Christian men. These gals have worked with white separatists and a host of kooks. Matt is a Christian guy who defends ladies, has raised a beautiful family, believes in the Bible and works to save the lives of men, women and children in Africa. To address Mr. Giromini's baseless comments he needs to remember that it's not wrong for a man to receive financial compensation for his hard work. Mr. Giromini must be a marxist if he thinks it's wrong for someone to be compensated for his work. These people have a grudge and they need to keep it out of this contest. They give Christians a bad name.

  • Jason - 15 years ago

I'm with anonymous on this one. While I don't agree with Chancey's view that women shouldn't vote (it's 2008 people), it seems like the anti-Chancey contingency here are just a bunch of people that have some sort of intra-church grudge. Evangelical Christians are notorious for creating huge schisms amongst a church because they were offended one day at church. Looking at some the links and googling about Chancey, this is what it appears to be. Like anonymous said, keep your kooky Christian grudges out of this contest.

  • joshua - 15 years ago

Appalled, go find someone else out there that doesn't agree with you on something and belittle them. There's obviously more to the story than you are preaching.

  • Appalled - 15 years ago

"I am just saying let’s stand back and think."

Stand back and think about WHAT, Joshua? What is there to think about? Didn't we settle this issue back in 1920? Please, tell me what there is to "think about." I'd really like to know.

Jennie preaches one thing on her website, but then when she is confronted by the mainstream media, or when her husband is in a contest run by a large corporation, she tries to play it down for mass consumption. It is dishonest. But this will be my last post. If Matt wins, he wins.

  • joshua - 15 years ago

    Appalled,

I am convinced that you read what you want and not what is said. If you can take the time to do the research and find something that you think is wrong with someone, why don't you find some things that you and Mr. Chancey agree on? You obviously are just trying to find dirt, and you are coming up short. Who cares if he believes this way? Who cares, I repeat, WHO CARES? What are your views on homosexual marriage? They might be different than Mr. Chanceys? What about abortion? Or the war in iraq? But, who cares! This isn't about that. You're the one who is brainwashed. You think that everyone has to believe the same way that you do. This is what you pasted on the board. Did you even read the article? http://www.dothaneagle.com/dea/news/local/article/psc_candidates_wife_says_she_chose_homemaker_job/26847/

Jennie Chancey clears up her views by saying she does vote.

“I don’t oppose women voting,” she said. “All I am taking is a historical viewpoint. I am not a revolutionary saying, ‘Let’s go back.’ I am just saying let’s stand back and think.” Fact, Appalled is a woman who doesn't understand her readings.

  • Appalled - 15 years ago

Joshua, the fact that you are trying to convince us that a husband voting FOR his wife (rather than her having a vote of her own almost a CENTURY after women finally won that right) is a "good thing" tells me that you have been brainwashed into the same cult Matt's in. If you people want to believe this as part of your religion, fine, but don't try to convince the rest of us that it's "normal" or "no big deal." I am a woman who loves manly men AND my right to vote, and it IS a big deal!

  • MiMi Norton - 15 years ago

Did anybody just hear Howie Farmer on the radio? He truly has the "art of manliness" down pat. His humor and humility shined through. He recognizes what an honor being nominated truly is. I'm proud to call this wonderful man my friend!

  • Joshua - 15 years ago

Thank you Anon for the voice of reason. It's good to see that an adult can write on this board.

Even if someone thinks that a man can vote for his household, so what? Who cares. That actually is a good idea. Then family's wont be separated in their ideas and that the vote counts for not only the wife, but that it represents the children too. This is actually historical, when men used to vote to represent their family's and if they owned land. Because the lawmakers wishes affected the family's land. I'm not saying that me and my wife vote that way. But it does bring the family together. Maybe if some of the people on this board have a mind on them, they can actually figure this one out. But yet there will always be people attacking martyrs like Matt Chancey. Good people will get attacked for their beliefs because they might have a different view. Oh by the way, Mr. Chancey is in the Sudan right now for a month taking supplies and building water wells for the tribes in danger of their lives and health.

  • Anon - 15 years ago

When I look into the claims of the anti-Matthew Chancey people who have commented previously, it seems to me that much of this fuss is between one crazy group of Christians and another. There is certainly merit to claims that the Chanceys are chauvinistic, but when you read what they actually say, even this is more mild than the anti-Chancey people are making it out to be. What I see when I look at Brandon's blog is a bunch of people who have deeply held grudges against each other flinging mud at each other, and trading accusations. This seems like some kind of Christian feud that has unfortunately spilled over into this contest. Please keep your weird Christian feuds to yourself. And just for the record, I'm not even a Chancey supporter, I voted for Howie Farmer and I hope he wins.

  • Brandon Giromini - 15 years ago

If you google Matt Chancey you will learn many not so nice things about him, much of it is available on my website if you search for his name. One thing Matt forgets to tell people about his adventures in the Sudan is that he is compensated for his work, so it is not voluntary. He forgot to mention this on his website when he ran for public office earlier this year in Alabama but I link to the publicly available documents which show his income. A manly man does not character assassinate people online with ridiculous claims and wild accusations in an failed attempt to deflect criticism against a close friend but Matt Chancey did such a thing with mrsbinoculars.com. Please contact me via my website if you want further details and documentation as people need to know the truth.

"Vote reform"? Taking the right to vote away from women is VOTE REFORM?!!

Well, Steve, since you think anyone should have the right to their own idea of vote reform, here's MY idea of vote reform: Hey everybody, go vote for Howie Farmer right now and beat the pants off this extremist kook!

    Mm-kay, Steve?

  • Steve - 15 years ago

I googled Matthew, and it looks to me like most the prize money will go to feed starving children in Africa. So he's got some wonky ideas about vote reform? Big deal. I think there's a lot of sour grapes on this board.

Here is Matt Chancey's wife explaining why she and Matt believe that a woman working outside her home is "in sin" and a "blasphemer":

    http://www.visionforumministries.org/issues/family/jennie_chancey_responds_to_tit.aspx

I can't believe Old Spice doesn't do any background checks on these finalists. My gosh, all of this could have been easily found through google.

  • Concerned - 15 years ago

Joshua, you have got to be kidding me. You are tired of children posting unnecessary comments?!? A true man inspires our youth, teaches and instructs them, shows them how to love and respect others. The comment section is for whoever wants to post comments about whichever candidate they want to win. I see nothing wrong with children submitting comments about the candidates, it only shows the respect these young adults have for these men. I am sure whoever wins will be deserving in their own way.

  • Appalled - 15 years ago

He'll be getting $2000 in prize money from Old Spice-- that's bad enough. Lord only knows where it'll go. My husband uses Old Spice, too, but if Chancey wins, no more.

  • Lisa - 15 years ago

Appalled, that is really disturbing information, and after reading it I found more online that really makes me wonder what sort of "manliness" Mr. Chancey stands for. He is one of the poll leaders, and he may win. Will he have any sort of a paid "spokesperson" role for Old Spice if he does? Because I'm the main purchaser of Old Spice at my home, lol, at least around Christmastime for family gifts, and I'm not sure that I could continue to purchase their products if they associate their company with Mr. Chancey's radical views.

I mean, I'm no feminist, but I do like my right to vote!

  • Appalled - 15 years ago

Matt Chancey and his wife Jennie belong to the Vision Forum cult and believe that votes should be cast "by household," not by individuals. And guess who gets to cast the vote for the household? That's right, in the year 2008, Matt Chancey does not believe women have the right to an individual vote of their own. Don't believe me? Here ya go:

Joshua quit to fire the blame eh? If somebody has an opinion let them voice it, trying to start a fight over the internet is not very manly.

    C. Everett Koop,

If smoking is reckless behavior, than why don't you complain to the host of this website about recommending a pipe as one of the holiday gift guide items for men? Go find something else to do with your time.

"General MacArthur, Einstein, Oppenheimer, Twain, Gandalf the Wizard. What do all these men have in common? They were pipe smokers. There’s something about a pipe that makes a man look wiser and manlier. Plus pipe smokes smells a heck of a lot better than cigarette smoke. If you know a man who smokes, consider getting them a pipe along with some pipe tobacco."

Cheers to the art of manliness for such a great holiday item!

I've just met Matt Chancey a couple or three times and those were all in the quest of an appropriate cause: support for the candidacy and high principles of an iconoclastic candidate for President on the Republican ticket. Matt is versatile, dynamic and dedicated to causes he believes in. I didn't know about this African effort until these communications but am not a bit surprised and feel they just add to his credentials, his luster as I know them.

I cannot stress enough what a large impact Howie has made on my life. You as a voter, reader and hopefully a fan should without a doubt vote for Howie. I'm not even related to the man and he has made me, from a scared little 10 year old boy, to a strong and confident 15 year old young man. Howie, to me, will always be a caring, loving man, a coach, a mentor, and most importantly a friend.

(looks like i got a little carried away with 4620 characters..)

  • David Chrysler - 15 years ago

Howie is truly amazing. I see him everywhere in the summer riding motorcycles with his friend Stacey. I think Howie had an influence on Stacey getting the motorcycle in the first place. If youve never seen Howie, you wouldn't know how amazingly intimidating he is. Once you get to know him he's a soft person though. Howie, as far as I ever remember, has been at every sports game his son, Zack has ever had. This includes 19 games of baseball in the summer and 16+ games of football in the fall, traveling all over Duluth to watch his talented son play. And being on Zack's team, I get a lot of advice and pre-at-bat pep talks. Right before I get up to bat, I hear one thing, "Come on Shrek!" and if I was at all nervous before, the humor of the nickname he gave me 5 years ago loosens me up. Aside from witnessing Howie' s help on the baseball team, I've experienced it during football aswell. Howie was my first football coach of my career. Although he was a tough intimidating coach, I believe he had a lot of faith in my ability because he started me even though there were plenty of older kids on our team. Some of the things he taught me I will never forget. One is to not put my hands in my pockets. He told me one time the first day of football to take my hands out of my pockets and I dont think I ever put them back in my pockets during football again. This is probably because he said it so loud I thought I had a heart attack. All through 6th grade he taught me things in a sincere, patient manner. It seemed easy when I was that young, but now that I've tried to demonstrate the things he used to demonstrate to kids the same age that I was then, I really appreciate the patience he used as it was probably just as difficult as when I tried. Every once and awhile when I was on an older team than Howie's he would come over and mess around with me during practice for fun. All the coaches I've ever been with have known Howie well. He is a really great guy to be around, this might be good for him and the other coaches, but to me it just means I will never leave Howie's cheerful and self-amusing-using-me-as-his-humor personality. Just this year, I was on his son Zack's team for football and whatever chance he got he would carry a normal conversation but then eventually bring up my football preformance and how I could improve it. I attended Howie's strength and agility camp for three or four years because I just could not get away from his knowledge of everything, Baseball, Football, Excersing of any kind, Weightlifting, anything. I'm guessing from his build he was a lineman, in football, in his day. He teaches me all about my postion(lineman) Zack's position (quarterback) John Babick(family friend)'s postion (runningback) and all of his players' postions (which is everything). During Baseball, he knows about every postion, infield or outfield. He knows just about everything about batting and pitching as well. He has taught Zack how to pitch and bat, and Zack has not only done great at these things, but he has excelled at them. Football is the same thing, Howie taught Zack about playing Quarterback and he ended up being second string on the Varsity team in his sophomore year, second to Skylar Murray who is a first team all state nominee. I can ask Howie just about anything on any random subject and he will either give you the correct answer or just use his past knowledge and great logic to figure it out. This has to help with homework at home too. Howie is a great cook and treats his son and wife, Marie like they just got married, you can always see them holding hands and laughing. They share great times together and are always in great moods (I didn't mean to embarass him either..). Howie has high expectations out of his son. Through all the family meals, family trips to Valley Fair with other sports families, and great father-son and husband-wife bonds, Howie has built a tight loving family, with his love Marie. Howie loves to bond with Zack and

Howie Farmer was my son's football coach. Howie showed him that some of the best things in life are not easy. He also showed him what football is really about. The level of effort he was able to get out of his team was amazing. ALL the kids are proud to have been coached by Howie; and they'll never forget what he did for them. For society's sake, I hope he continues coaching until he's at least 85.

    Vote for Howie!
