Do You Agree or Disagree with the Idea of this Coalition Government?

Please correct me if I am wrong but I believe we have only one representative federally for the entire province of Alberta if we end with a coalition government.

Dana - Thanks for your post, but I see this very differently.
A temporary cut of our tax money to fund the Parties will not bankrupt any one of the Parties. It will cost the Conservatives some 10 million in revenue; and the Liberals (the second most seriously affected) some 4 million - if I recall the numbers correctly.
And it is a temporary measure, anyway.
I like a Gov't that says they will take money out of their pocket to help the country....
Democracy allows for the formation of coalitions... there have been many in the past and will be more in the future.
But - THIS particular coalition, for their particular motives, at this particular TIME is what I find morally repugnant.
The Harper gov't did not bring forward a Budget. They said they will have plans prepared by late Jan/09.
I like the sound of that much better than hearing that we, the tax payer, will be spending Umpteen Billion dollars on.... what ? Infastructure is not an answer.... it is too vague. I would like to hear an actual plan.
That means, we need to give our leaders TIME to develop a plan.

This coalition is a crime against Canada. It is heinous. Jean Chretian has finally stuck it to western Canada. We are merely the fools who created the wealth for the socialists to squander and now these three stooges are drunk with power. The peasants be damned. I weep for my country. For the first time in my life I am truly afraid. My vote means nothing.

It is my hope that Harper drops the writ tomorrow!

  • Bruce A B - 3 years ago

I do hope your are able to monitor your voting public and that you can track duplicates and jammers from plugging votes because I have yet to speak with one single person the entire day that believes this is the right thing for the losing parties to be proposing and yet your poll indicates otherwise. Also no one in the coverage proposed through any media has supported the idea. Therefore I DO NOT TRUST THIS POLL.

Harper was willing to have a coalition at one point. Why is he crying foul now?

  • Dana - 3 years ago

I am no fan of Dion, but having said that I can see the others parties posistion. This is about protecting Demecracy in Canada, because if the cons budget went through, and the parties lose their funding and go bankrupt, How is a 1 party system democratic?

  • Kim B - 3 years ago

    Un-Like CCCCCCChrétien one would suppose????

  • Dana - 3 years ago

I agree with with the concept of a coalition govt, after years of watching Harper strong arm everybody including his own party members, not aloowing any dissenting opinions. It is time for Harper to stop running the government like a 1 man show, and if that means a coalition taking power by working together, then so be it.

Are we in old school Russia? Last time i checked Canada was based on its citizens voice. Maybe they should sit in on a social 10 class...

  • Cynthia V - 3 years ago

Stephan Dion is the Robert Mugabe of the Northern Hemisphere. We are in danger of becoming a third world country. For the first time in my life, I am truly frightened for my country. They are killing democracy. The first thing the three stooges will do is spend this country into a depression, and massively increase taxes on western Canadians and their industries to prop up manufacturing in Ontario so they can buy votes. This is corruption at its highest level, not unlike Pakistan and Russia. Be afraid, be very afraid. These power hungry monsters will tear this country apart.

  • Kim B - 3 years ago

This is nothing but a coup and I pray Canadians will not stand for such folly no matter what or who they supported in the last election. This is just wrong and everyone I have spoken with is shocked and frightened. In Canada we believed we decided our government of the day and not the other way around!! When the west separates over this nonsense - And it will- We want Harper and the 25% that say this is the democratic way can be governed by the other Three Stooges. And guest what - you don't get to choose to have it any other way!!

Absolutley against this coalition. Have we, the people, really no say in Canada anymore? The moment that the Harper govt launched the 1rst step toward fiscal management of the current financial crunch, by cutting their own (and all parties) tax-funded perks, the coalition over-throw is staged.
I felt that Harper's initial fiscal response to the 'crisis' was sound - not "over reactionary" or vague (ie. They didn't just state a large $$ for a bail-out without giving details of what, who and how.) I do not believe any political party (or coalition of parties) can decide properly where best to apply billions of dollars in 7 days, to "save us", so giving Harper til Jan/09 seemed quite practical to me.
But - regardless of the fact that we elected Harper twice - both times asking all of our leaders to work together in the best interests of our diverse country - we have a coalition movement turning our country's political scene into a circus.
Separatists, the NDP and Liberals want to give us a Prime Minister that completely lost the confidence of his own party in recent months. I won't comment on my opinion of Dion's attributes, but we could all assume his own party has gauged them correctly. It just doesn't cut it for them to stand up now and say what a great leader Dion is. I can recall the days following the election clearly.
Jack Layton understands the "needy" (in my opinion because he himself is needy - for power) and he can pull together any group that has the same motives. We are hearing about potential bail-outs for the auto sector; then rumbles about bail-outs for the equally troubled forestry, fishery & agriculture sectors, etc etc. The country is going to see a feeding frenzy for bail-out $$.
Do you really want the BLOC even partially in charge of where it goes ?
If Harper has to prorogue in order to shut this down, I feel that is closer to what the voting public said they wanted when they cast ballots weeks ago. We did not vote for a coalition of the BLOC, Liberals and NDP.
But, it would be best if this little band of merry men would grow up & realize they are supposed to be working for us instead of staging mock battles for control of Sherwood Forest.
Its not a game or a fairy tale. This is our country. We are facing difficult times ahead. We will all need to help each other, use our common sense and be practical in order to survive. I feel our elected government (Conservative) was approaching the issues with that attitude.
I am ashamed of the current state of affairs in our country - with a coalition trying to de-rail what was working properly.

I saw Elizabeth May on the news this morning. Looks like she might have been promised a seat in the Senate so she can be in the cabinet too in return for the Green support. Another person who couldn't get elected the democratic way jumping on board.

Didn't David Chernushenko quit the Green party due to her autocratic "leadership". Maybe she can be the minister of Via Rail and make more speeches at 3am to nobody again.

All the cons need to do is delay it long enough so Dion gets on TV a few times and tries to speak as it will remind Canadians why they rejected him so soundly a few weeks ago and why they needed to surround him with people during the election. I heard him the other day and I found myself slapping my forehead screaming NOOOO!

  • Trevor W - 3 years ago

I have been looking into this for the past 2 days and i have figured out the main idea. If the cons. stay in power with what the have set up for budget cuts the Liberals will go bankrupt and the NDP wouldn't be to far behind. My thought on that is too bad for you. I guess you should have had a better platform and not spent so much money in a losing battle. I'm 100% against this as a Canadian citizen!

  • George G - 3 years ago

Everybody was laughing at Soviet Union regime in the past. It is time for Canada to known how it feels to be govern by a bunch of socialistic-communistic clowns!

  • Craig - 3 years ago

I am still trying to make sense of this all so I am by no means an expert when it comes to politics. But I personally think this sounds like Canadians are under a communist regime. I understand how this works logistically, but I don't understand how this works fundamentally and ethically. How can the government that we the people voted for TWICE not be our government?

I agree with Neil that coalition governments should be allowed, but only in extreme cases where the Prime Minister abuses their power ignoring everyone - even their own party. Is this in fact the case? Is Harper a tyrant? Or is the Conservatives inability to make decisions based on the opposition's fighting every issue, giving us the illusion the Cons cannot govern?

If Harper is a tyrant, then a coalition is a good thing. If however, he isn't abusing his power, then I think this situation is embarrassing and it's absolutely ridiculous no matter which party is leading our country.

Regardless, if the opposition spent as much time working with the Conservatives to find solutions to our nation's issues and help Canadians (as opposed to fighting everything), maybe we would be making some headway.

Someone please educate me if I am out to lunch here.

  • jerry - 3 years ago

Jack will never in his life time hold a cabinet position so he sees an opportunity to grab it now. If this was about the economy why not wait until the budget is presented and then bring the gov't down? This is about power grab. And they talking about saving the auto sector, if Washington does not decide to plung money into the auto sector i want to see which one of them can save it. It all depends on the US if they don't don anything canada can't save the auto sector.

  • Albert Cuddihey - 3 years ago

Hold another election. Let the people who voted last time for the Liberals and NDP decide if they really want to vote for a coalition that includes the BQ. I have no doubt it would give Harper a majority. I have 3 people who voted Liberal in my office of 10 that would now vote Conservative.

  • Mark Stock - 3 years ago

These poll results do not appear to include the number of people who voted.

I don't know whether I agree or disagree -- so like many polls, I have no say. I don't want these Conservatives (Reform-Alliance Party) in power and I don't want the Liberals in power either. I appreciate you allowing comment.

  • Neil - 3 years ago

I don't like the wording of this question. I support that coalition governments should be allowed. What I don't support is THIS coalition government, because it includes a separatist party.

  • Matthew - 3 years ago

Mr. Dion and Mr. Leyton, you truly are a bunch of pathetic losers. Shame on you for grabbing what Canadians wouldn't give you, SHAME!!!!!!!
