Head coaching experience is really important - that is the biggest adjustment that every coordinator has when they take over a program - especially a D-1 program. The head coach has to be someone who surrounds himself with great coaches who can recruit. The head coach is NOT the recruiter but needs to be able to create an environment of being in charge, and caring about his players to the parents and to the kids - the position coach has to be the one that can convince the kids to come. That's just how it works.
The head coach CANNOT be offensive or defensive coordinator too. They need to delegate that role and trust the person they give it to, oh, and yes, hole that person accountable and reward that person when successful.
I am overly annoyed with the people who have too many opinions about who we should hire, yet seem destined to bash whatever decision Dr Gross makes. They should all be banned from the world, not just the site. If you really care about and support SU, you need to let the job get done, support the decision and support the program by buying tickets and going to games.

College football is totally based on the quailty of the player. You need someone who can recuit. New players every four years is a must in college football, there are no free agents or trades.

A great recruiter is not the No.1 priority. Look at Notre Dame and you see what happened to them. SU needs an experienced Head Coach with a winning tradition and the recruits will come. SU missed a great opportunity last year to go after Paul Johnson from Navy. Look at his past track record at Navy and his 2 National Championships at Ga. Southern. With very little time at Ga Tech he has turned the football team into a winning program.
We need a guy who is a current head coach. One with a proven track record of turning teams around. A guy who is familiar with the challenges of recruiting in the Northeast...a guy who is flexible and will cater his offense to the personnel he has. A great QB and solid WR depth? Go 5 wide. 2 dominant RBs? Be a power team.
The guy that fits all of the above is Skip Holtz.

That's easy. I want a coach picked by someone other that Dr. Daryl Gross.

Someone who doesn't read children's books.
