The Christian faith is a remarkably diverse religious/spiritual perspective. There are those who identify with the teachings of Jesus who are conservative and liberal in their interpretation of Christianity for the modern world. Many theologically conservative Christians approach their faith in a fundamentalist way which emphasizes a very literal application of Ancient Biblical texts to our contemporary world. While fundamentalists represent a minority perspective, it is a growing and very vocal minority. They feel compelled to convert or condemn those who do not live by a literal interpretation of the Bible to the moral and ethical questions of modern society. Many people think true Christianity is represented by Fundamentalists and are not aware that other Christians have embraced the modern world and have a more liberal and openminded perspective of the way the Ancient teachings of Jesus are applied to our time. As a Christian Minister in the Liberal Christian tradition, I believe that there is no incompatibility between genuine spirituality reflected in the central teachings of Jesus and ethically responsible human sexuality in all its diversity. Sexuality if practiced between consenting adults in a way that is respectful and responsible (treating others as we wish to be treated) is ethically consistent with the teachings of Jesus. Human sexuality is a good gift of God and should be embraced and celebrated both relationally and recreationally in our lives.
