Given that the town is facing a $4 million deficit, what should the town do about the Fire Department?

• Nothing. The town needs the seven companies it has now and any cuts will put residents and their property at risk.

• Cut an entire engine company, as recommended by the Efficiency Initiative Committee. The town could use the $1.4 million in savings and it won't affect public safety.

• Cut fire manning down to three men per truck, or to a combination of three and four men per truck. The chief's not wild about it, but it makes more sense than cutting a whole engine company.

• I don't know the answer. Either way, I'm double-checking my fire insurance policy.
