The problem is deciding WHAT constitutes unhealthy? Do instant mashed potatoes NEED corn syrup solids? There are hundreds of names that sweeteners hide behind. In my opinion soda should be not allowed but then again lobster shouldn't be either. If steak is discounted because it's "less than fresh" can I get it? If someone is on food stamps they have no sales tax but if they use a coupon they are taxed on it. (mere pennies but trying to pinch pennies shouldn't be taxed)

Thank you Audrey you are so right. About 25 years ago I was on food stamps for a few weeks and it was paper food stamps, not a card. You could not buy candy, soda or even cookies which I agreed with. They are given if you are In basically a dire condition, not for snacks and junk food, but for healthy food which your body needs. If you are so bad off to need food stamps then you do not need Junk Food. If you need snacks then make your own out of good foods. Frozen Bananas and milk with small amount of sugar in a blender makes a nice form of ice cream, see that is a snack. People are so used to the easy way, or can I say LAZY, they just want to open a bag, that isn’t healthy and isn’t filling, and too much junk food leads to bad health, obesity. If someone wants junk food then find a lawn to mow and use the money to stuff your face with junk.

I agree that you can't deny treats even on food stamps, but make it a better/healthier one like one without carbs: Rebel Keto Ice Cream, for example and have smaller portions, instead of most of the conventional ones. However, vegans believe that meat is bad for you as do many in the US gov't. Then there is Apeel on some organic fruits and veggies thanks NOT to the Gatesinator at some stores like Costco It all depends on who you listen to and where you shop! Research is crucial!

Knowing what many recipients of "food stamps" do with them, I would say to ban products that require a deposit, ban fast food and restaurant foods and limit junk food. Better yet, is lower the amount of food stamps and go back to dispersing government cheese, powdered eggs, etc., etc., As one who was a recipient of food stamps years ago(6 months), there was barely enough to buy inexpensive food, let alone treats, sodas and expensive cuts of meat. Limit how long some can collect welfare.

WHO is going to decide what's unhealthy? Most of our processed food is unhealthy! Many of our fruits and vegetables are contaminated with pesticides. Breakfast cereals and packaged foods are GMO and have cancer causing dyes. Trying to find healthy food is NOT easy! Let's not get so controlling at this point. Maybe they want to buy that cake mix or a treat for the kids. Do Exclude sodas that are harmful to everyone! Maybe provide nutrition information to educate people to eat healthy.

Sounds like a case of good for thee, but not for me. So, anyone not on government assistance can eat whatever they want.
How about a new poll asking if it should be taken away from everyone. What would those results show?

It's not the government's job to dictate what people eat. I'm on permanent disability and I only get $23 to food stamps so since I'm not a fixed income I used the food stamps to get me my treats. Now I was thinking reverse it they don't have that much. I just don't think it should be a forced issue. Cuz maybe a lot of people that are in food stamps doesn't mean they are overweight or unhealthy.

I am old enough to remember that we used to get Government Cheese, Generic Spam, powder milk, powder eggs, and generic cereal. When paper food stamps came out ,you could only use them in a grocery store, NOT A corner convenient store or FAST FOOD. And you could only buy mostly healthy items. Milk, cheese vegetables meat etc. If my memory serves me right you could NOT buy junk food or candy. Michigan used to have so many people on welfare in the late 70's early 80' that someone produced a bumper sticker that reads "Michigan Welfare Wonderland " . In the early 80's Michigan started making people on Welfare work their grant off. Back in 1981 or 1982 my husband lost his job. We were on welfare and they put him to work in a cemetery to work off the money, food, and medical that we received.
Too many people who are getting these cards are swapping for drugs. OUR CHILDREN ARE DOING WITHOUT and so many of our women and men are becoming lazy and drug adicts. My opinion from what I have observed over the years.
I TRULY believe we should go back to passing out commodity. I don't think a drug dealer would take government food for drugs, more people would want to work rather than eat block cheese and powdered milk etc. Government could buy from our farmers. More children eating. AGAIN MY OPINION.

I too was once on food stamps (way back when), and I couldn't afford snacks. I was worried about making sure my child had meals 3 times a day, everyday. And thankfully I didn't have to be on food stamps long.

I was once on food stamps. You can't deprive snacks. There's only so much meat and veggies you can eat. Most people on food stamps don't want to be on them. You can't take away the small pleasures. People on assistance have so few.

Also, welfare should not be permanent.
