By the way, I think the dumbest thing that ever happened to Karate is the belt system. Either you can fight or you can not. Simple as that. I much prefer Meuy Thai to any form of Karate.

I have to go along with Bruce Lee on the Kata thing, they are useless. I discovered that I was a much better fighter after studying Meuy Thai and forgetting the katas. I was a better fighter when I only knew about street fighting before I ever studied Karate, I went through a phase where I could not fight for anything, till I started forgetting the katas. IN fact, the only time I was sugnificantly injured, even though I was into Kyokushin karate and traditionally that was full contact, although it did not incorporate face punching, even though that is not pracical either, it was traditional to the style, the only time I was injured badly was when I was a very low belt and they put a silly teenage boy in charge of the class when the teacher was going to be somewhere else that night. The idiot kicked my knee out from behind to see if I was holding my knee straight, which the kata required. I finally got the knee replaced 50 years later. So much for Katas. Not for me, thank you very much.

I need to first preface, I am not anti-forms in TKD. The art of TKD is a beautiful and powerful art to master and forms are an integral part of this forceful form of Martial Arts. In addition, I study Martial Arts for the self-defense aspects as a general focus. So all moves have to be met with an opponent that offers resistance and a mind that can counter and keep one out of "fixed" movements.
Forms are a good way to warm up the body... Again, The issue I have with forms being used to fight the "imaginary" opponent is that you will always win in your mind. The moves are finite in function. I have tried to train students over the years to learn the form as an extension of all the movements/techniques in TKD, but again, the issue is unless you in a situation where you opponent can counter you really can't see how the technique can work. Forms can give you an outline or plan of how your body responds best to certain techniques, but as Muhammed Alli once stated, "Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth."

I am a 2nd degree black belt, and I've been doing forms for along time, but the more you mess up, the higher rank you are, and the more experienced you are. They get so, so, so, so, so picky they yell at you and everything. The kicks and punches and etc are great, but I wish we didn't have forms. And hey get this I'm not even a teacher yet. They must have something against me.

Forms are extremely useful. They help you to perform and perfect self-defense techniques against an imaginary opponent. If you UNDERSTAND the meaning of the moves in the forms you would see how this fits together. You should practice your form with speed, power, and control as if your life depended on it.

Forms are definitely a good review of all of the motions you learn. I enjoy learning them.
