Unfortunately, in these situations, you can't fire players, so the coach is usually the guy who goes. I don't think Otis Smith will fire Van Gundy after giving up a draft pick to get him. Another coach is not going to help the situation. On the other hand, there were some questionable moves late in the 4th quarter. Somebody please explain to me why Courtney Lee plays 12 minutes the entire game, and J.J Redick is on the floor with 1:20 left on the clock attempting to play defense on one of the best shooters in the game (Ray Allen). Redick and defense don't even belong in the same sentence. The guy is a shooter who can't seem to shoot anymore. If he's not making shots, get him off the floor because he's giving you nothing!! If Lee is healthy enough to play, then put him on the floor. The guy was carrying the Magic through the Philly series before he got hurt. Dwights a young guy who wants to win and he's frustrated by not getting enough touches. But if nobody noticed, he didn't do much with the touches he got. He really needs to work on his low post moves and adding a 10 to 12 foot jumpshot will make him nearly unstoppable. He relies too much on dunks and put backs. The fact is, the Magic need a go to guy in the 4th quarter and Lewis, Turk and Alston, aren't the answer. Dwight could be it, if he would get that free throw average above 55%. Where's Jameer when we need him, oh that's right, at the end of the bench regulated to being a well dressed cheerleader......oh well, "we'll get'm next year."
Basketball is played at both ends of the court. Maybe Howard should have gotten a few more touches. We wouldn't be having these discussions if the Magic make one of those shots and or make one more stop. For that matter if the refs call the game fairly and don't ask for Perkins opinion as to wether the ball hit the rim or not or call Perkins for the foul when Hedo drove to the basket.
Stan Van Gundy has done a wonderful job with this team taking them to one of the best seasons in their history. They have had a history all season of taking their foot off the gas when they though they had a comfortable lead. Maybe this will teach them not to let up until the job is done.
The coach did not take any of those misguided shots, he didn't turn over the ball, and he did not get beat to any of those rebounds. Coaches coach, players play, let's not alibi the players and blame the coaches when the players don't play well. If Howard had defended one of those Boston shots or had recovered an offensive rebound and scored would SVG gotten the credit? Probably not.
I tend to agree with Mr. Cassidy and Dwight if it's working why change it and the experience of the moment for that particular group of players is essential for future games, the other teams have to figure out how to defend that group they haven't seen much of that benefits us tremendously. We got here with Dwight and then the shots came not the other way around, take the ball to the rim and slow the other teams momentum down quickly and play your best defenders when we get a good lead it takes away their strength and hope of winning, its defense and rebounding that crushes the other teams spirit ... where are our rebounders ? Oh and last of all who likes the coach and please don't tell me it doesn't matter because we are a team and respect is needed and essential to win . And we can win we have a GREAT team, lets do it ... GO MAGICS !!!!!!
I hope Van Gundy gets fired. I have a ticket for tomorrow's game and i won't be going. It's the first home playoff game i've missed in 2 years. I won't go back to another game until we get Van Gundy out. He let Boston go on an 8-0 run before he called a time out. He gives Courtney Lee (one of our best players) hardly any minutes. He takes Lewis off who was our best player in the paint. Miami got rid of him and they won the title the very next season. He never even played basketball before he was a coach. A blind man can see the key to beating Boston is points in the paint, but Van Gundy doesn't seem to get that. The Magic are a decent team, who can beat Boston, but they need a decent coach. Van Gundy chokes in the playoffs, and i give him the majority of the blame for last nights defeat. We will never have a better chance to win in Boston than we did last night, and we blew it big time. I thing Boston will beat us tomorrow and end it. Van Gundy must go, he's on borrowed time and costs the Magic too many important games. He is not a good coach.
