the idea of "one true faith" certainly has caused an awful lot of division. i think it's possible to have the idea of "one true faith" bring people together, provided that the "true faith" is an amalgamation of all others, much like universalism (although i don't think universalism is universal enough to be the one true faith.)
where that idea falls the shortest is in christianity when people bring up the line about jesus saying "there is no way but through me." that jesus is "the only way." taken literally, that certainly reinforces division. it's possible to intepret that too in a way that is not so troublesome, but it takes more effort than it does to interpret the idea of "one true faith" in a beneficial way.
The real reason is that people are waking up to the facts. The facts are that the church has done a grood job for the most part in helping folk to get to some sort of balance in spirituality. But the real truth is that churches, mosques, temples and religions divide good people one from another by perclaiming the ONE NAME OR ONE DIETY IS GREATER AND THE ONLY WAY when in fact they all are ONE. FAITH IS ONE, GOODNESS IS ONE, SPIRITUALITY IS ONE, (GOD) THE DIVINE CREATION (CREATOR) IS ONE. There is no such as Jesus, Muhammad or any other person or diety greater than the other. These are the facts that people are waking up to and the church / mosque can not keep this from getting out to creative people who are searching for reality and the real truth.
