There is a huge body of evidence that makes it very clear that the installation of red light cameras is all about revenue collection and has very little to do with improving safety (see: http://www.thenewspaper.com/rlc/reports/rlcreport.asp) for the summary of an excellent article regarding this entitled "Red Light Camera Scam".
Many municipalities have co-conspired with the two primary red light camera manufacturers (Redflex and ATS Corp which are the two largest) to shorten the yellow light duration from three seconds to 1.5 seconds to maximize the revenue), hence an increasing number of cities are being legally forced to close down their highly questionable red light camera "enforcement" schemes once thoroughly analyzed. Type "Red Light Camera Tickets Defeated in California" into Google for a recent article regarding this.
Also, learn even more on the National Motorists Association's website about the highly questionable nature of cities that are doing this.

Has anyone heard of Big Brother? There are already all sorts of cameras on city corners and traffic lights across the U.S. We must be careful as Americans not to give up our right to privacy in order catch minor violations of the law.

Bad idea !
The first paragraph in the article says it all ! The cameras will not change the way a person drives. The drivers who speed will still speed. They will become
much more of a hazard as they slam on therir brakes to avoid that 50 dollar fine. I think it's a stupid idea that will result in much carnage over the long haul, with the generating of revenue being the real objective!
