I'm an atheist, so deep down I really don't care, but if we recognise Muslim holidays, then shouldn't we recognise the holidays of other faiths also? We seem to generally be a 'christian' society, in the same way that Iran seems to generally be a 'Muslim' society, so we should really stick to concerning ourselves with the needs and rights of 'the many', rather than of the lesser groups ... in this case anyway! If I had my way, religion wouldn't exist, then 'holy days' would become irrelevant ... along with a lot of other undesirable things!

Well, this won't be popular, but I actually think the fairest and most Constitutional solution would be not to close public schools in observance of religious holidays. For what it's worth, my background is Catholic and Episcopal, my step family is Jewish, my husband is Muslim, I used to live in a Buddhist country (Japan), and now I live in a majority-Indian (Hindu) neighborhood in the U.S. Really. I love and appreciate all these religions and their traditions.
If we close for Christmas, and we close for Yom Kippur, there is every justification for a Hindu student to feel entitled to observance of a major Hindu holiday, and for a Muslim, a Buddhist, and any member of any other religion etc., to ask for school closure on his/her religion's holiest day.
Granted, there's probably little reason to ask that a school be closed on a religious holiday of which no adherents attend the school (if there are no Jewish kids in School A, then why close on Yom Kippur?). On the other hand, imagine how it feels then to be the first kid of one religion in your school, having to fight that fight with the School Board.
Honestly, why does a state-sponsored public school take religious holidays? Doesn't it seem to go against separation of church and state? But I get it, it is a very ingrained thing, and obviously it wouldn't work to try to end public school holidays for religious observance.
Maybe a reasonable solution would be to keep the late December holiday time that recognizes New Year, Christmas, and Hanukkah. In areas where Rosh Hashanna (sp?) and Yom Kippur are observed, keep them, too. The Muslim holidays make it tricky because they are on the lunar calendar, so they change every year. Also, as one poster mentioned, kids have too many days off already. Also, many Muslims live in areas of the U.S. where snow days are a factor that cut even more days from the school calendar. But maybe plan in advance, and find a Muslim holiday (I think recognizing 1 is fair since just Christmas gets time off for Christians) that either falls during one of the scheduled vacation weeks (New Year/Feb./Apr.), or falls on another vacation day (Presidents, Veterans, Columbus, Yom Kippur, Thanksgiving, etc.), and include the Muslim holiday as an additional reason for that vacation day. I've never heard of Christians or Jews getting mad because Christmas and Hanukkah "share" a holiday week. Actually, it's convenient. Maybe if more religions could share in some existing vacation days, and simply be acknowledged on the school calendar, it would be helpful.
Well, hope I didn't make anyone mad. Just trying to think of creative solutions that attempt to value everyone--including the teacher who has not enough days in the year to squeeze in all the required learning. :-)

I'm a strong believer in pluralistic society. I believe it is a source of strength and not of weakness. Number of Muslim around the world is around 1.8 Billion, which makes it one of the largest faith in the world. The number of Muslims living in New York City is little less then one million. The public school going kids in New York city is around 1 million, out of which around 120,000 kids are muslim. These are big numbers and cannot be ignored. Adding muslim holidays to calender is the right thing to do.

Adding muslim holidays to calender is the right thing to do.
no way in hell should muslims get a holiday in public schools. we are not allowed to pray or say the word god, or say the pledge of allegance because of them. after 911 they dont deserve anything and have nerve asking for it.
The Chinese do not have a holiday ...nor do the Polish or Russian Why in God's name would we recognize muslims????? That is a disgrace to
America giving the creeps that blew up the world trade center recognition. A disgrace. I saw those muslims clapping the day of the attrack - how dare this government even consider honoring them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's see if WPIX has the nerve to read my comment on the air. I will be happy to call in and air my views. You just let me know when! Regards
whats next !!! give these filthy people the key to city, HEY TO ALL YOU MUSLIMS WORSHIP ALLAH FROM YOUR OWN COUNTRY, SHUTUP AND GET OUT, IM SURE THEY HAVE PLENTY OF HOLIDAYS IN THERE OWN COUNTRIES
There are a large number of Muslim students on our schools who deserve to have their holidays recognized. The school year is already longer than the state requires so we can afford to add the days to the calendar.
this is not a muslim country. this is an american country.
ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME.
Give them the day off, less people I have to see during rush hour. ;)
These kids already get enough days off. Parents have enough trouble finding and paying for sitters and daycare centers when the school recognize these holidays.
Yes, it is only fair they should. Students and faculty who practice Islam should have the right to observe their holy days and be allowed those days off from school. It is only fair due to the fact that Jewish and Christian holidays have been recognized by public schools for years.
