Maybe if yours and your wifes identities were stolen at the same time forom the same website you would feel different Mr McKimmey.....by the way was your ssn out there did you check??? No one is argueing about the land records being public....but she should have had the ssn's blocked, like she did her own and her family's. It is a public officials duty to know their responsililities to the people that elected them. We all need to get a petition to remove her from office.

My Bet is that most of the Documents in the County Clerk’s Office with Social Security Numbers on them were recorded long before Nancy Bryce was Clerk.

Remember when law enforcement suggested that folk put their Social Security Numbers on their Stock Trailers and other non tagged vehicles for identification.? You’d see these trailers towed down the highway with the Social Security Number in 8" letters.

Folks bought little engraving machines and put their Social Security Numbers on their bicycles, wheel chairs, hammers, tools, TV sets, radios and other personal stuff that wasn’t tied down - and if they didn’t have an engraver they’d use paint.

Folks even put their Social Security Numbers on their checks - Remember those days - not that long ago.

Now folk are yelling at Nancy Bryce who has done nothing wrong. She did and does her job of keeping records and recording document presented to her for recording. She does not have authority to refuse to record a legal document, nor to edit the documents for the people who want to record them. Once recorded they are official public records.

Haven’t researched it, but not really sure any public official has the authority to change any public records by redacting any information in them

Regardless, it is not her fault, nor the fault of any previous County Clerk that your Social Security Number - or any other private personal information, became public record. It’s there because you or someone you authorized to, made it public

JIM, I was responding to the question, "Should Pott. County be responsible for damages from identity theft caused by social security numbers being available on a county web site?" My answer is still "NO" the county should not be responsible! Nancy Brice is not the county and I don't have enough information on Brice to agree or disagree with your statement. However if my SS were used my opionion would not change I would still want the criminal who used it to be prosecuted. Jim 15 years ago our SS numbers were on everthing from public bills, drivers licenses, police reports, and more, without worry. Criminals are the ones who made us change our way of life. If those criminals were all caught and severly punished it wouldn't be a problem today.

Nancy Bryce should be removed from her position. She is totally incompetent. Brian maybe if your SSN had be taken off of the website and used, you would think differently. The county, at the hands of Bryce, is the reason someone was able to get to those numbers.

The county should not be responcible. The criminals that commits the act should be the person responcible. We should invest our time and money into increasing the number of investigators and prosecutors so these "scam artist" can be tracked down and prosecuted. I have past experience in this field and know there is simply not enough people to handle the case load. Now that Iv'e said they should not be responcible, I do believe it was a very poor decision to post the numbers and it should be immediately corrected.
