SHOULD THE SENATE APPROVE 2 BILLION MORE DOLLARS TO EXTEND CASH FOR CLUNKERS?

This program seems good on the surfact. There are two things wrong with it. The people that go to buy cars cannot be left with the cost of the government credit if the government does not come through. And guess what, a lot of dealers are being left with this cost. Why shouldn't a buyer have to sign that he will pay the balance of the cost of his purchase if the government doesn't pay? He owes that money. I am a little tired of paying for college education, houses, cars, medical care, furniture, baby sitters, food, anything else for persons when I can barely afford to pay for myself. I am 70 years old and I still have to work because my savings is going to pay for medicine. That is another thing the government pays for for all these people. STOP GIVING everything to some, and nothing to others. That is not representative government.

I am really scared with what they are going to come up with next. I can't believe this people are actually running America. When my mother decided to immagrate to USA; as an adult I am greatfuf she did. Now I am so scared to what this Demo are doing to this country. I really think this administration is doing an inside work for America's enemy; only enemy would run a country to ground. This is what Michael Savage called the "Enemy Within". How is a government going to be running the health care system and they can't even run the DMV. As an nurse, this upsets me and if the media could actually do their job as Fox News does; maybe we will stop this people from turning American into a third world country. If the system in Europe and Canada is working; we would have people running to this countries to get their so called health care services and America nurses would be running to go work their instead of their nurses running here to work. The average American don't even know what they are asking for. All they want is something for nothing. When they get it, they will be the first ones to complain when it does not work. I know it does not work, I don't want something for nothing. When you do the math , the # of uninsured citizens is below 8 million. I am so tired of people running their mouth everywhere you go and when you try to actualll have a conversation that actually make sense they are accusing you of not been Obama supporter( by the way I am Black female feminist prolife and R). I support who is good for America. We are not suppose to take side with someone that is running a country, we have to be critical with our leaderds. You stick with your family no matter what unless they kill someone. But government, you have to be critical on how they run a country because that is why they were voted in.I work hard for my money , I pay my fair share of taxes and I want to keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep what is mine. wake up America; my mother would have taken me if she wanted socialized nation.
    Lets take back America.

They have sold a quarter millions cars with this program. The math doesn't add up for the billion. We now have a quarter million folks in debt they may not be able to afford a year down the road.

Yes I am one of the angry mob, grand mother, no party, mad at both parties. No one hired me to be a tea party patriot!

  • Dawn - 3 years ago

What is going to happen when this "plan" stops? The car sales are going to plumit. The only reason people are buying is because of the offer, when thats gone I bet car sales fall. This will back fire just as everything this congress does!

  • Chris - 3 years ago

    Just ridiculous,
If this was partially about selling cars and stimulating the auto industry, shouldn't the dealers already have figured out that lowering the prices by the same amount the government may reimburse them on a car sale, would also have increased their sales by the same amount? Why do they wait for the democrat-run government to fix their poor business model with our tax dollars? Answer: Our ever-increasing culture of entitlement. "because we are, we must be owed something" That's the nation we live in today.

Sadly, now we won't see the auto-prices adjust like housing was destined to. Anybody remember most of the 1970's, when cars cost about a dollar per pound on average. Who and why do you think car prices skyrocket to today's level? Wasn't due to lack of competition, it was the unions and their democrat legislators in Washington. End of story.
Funny part is most of those taking the government money from this program know they can't afford to make the payments until the loan is satisfied, and will be back at "square one" anyway.

  • charles stansberry - 3 years ago

Sales without profit is crazy !!! If the cost per copy for each sale is $4,875 and you average $2,250 per copy front and back you are losing money with every sale. Of course the people in Congress and on the auto task force couldn't run a kool ade stand. All they see is the increase in sales numbers. This makes me think they are doing things STUPIDLY!! ( that sounds familiar )That is as smart as the Chrysler dealerships they closed and the over 40,000 jobs they eliminated at some of the top volume Chrysler dealerships.( said they didn't have time to check sales figures) Let'e let this bunch take care of our life and death decisions,,, we could make another dozen Cazrs or so !! Obama needs to pay these people out of his pocket,,that might slow this BS down !!! Tater58 over and out

  • Dixie Way - 3 years ago

NO more money for "Cash for Clunkers" program or as I put it "help someone with money that can get a loan to get a new car" program.

Would you please figure this out for me, I'm too stressed right now with ObamaCare to calculate this?
The cash for clunkers program paid $4,500 towards the purchase of a new car that gets better gas milage. If the new car gets 5 miles per gallon more than their clunker and gas is at $2.60 per gallon, how many fill-ups if the car holds 16 gallons would it take to make up for the $4,500 that the taxpayers gave them? This might help the so-called "Global Warming" non-issue, but is it really cost-affective?

My comment to my Representative and Senators from Illinois:

STOP SPENDING MY MONEY!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, NO HEALTHCARE REFORM UNTIL WE ARE OUT OF DEBT, UNLESS YOU CAN CoME UP WITH CHANGES ONLY TO THE GOVERNMENT FUNDED PROVIDERS aka MEDICARE AND MEDICAID. NO MORE PORK BARREL SPENDING, THOSE FAVORS CAN WAIT UNTIL WE ARE FINACIALLY STRONG AGAIN, BUT I FEEL THEY SHOULDN'T BE A PART OF THE PROCESS ANYWAY. NO PAY RAISES FOR THE GOVERNMENT UNTIL YOU START DOING YOUR JOBS FOR US, NOT FOR YOURSELVES. NO MORE ENABLING THOSE WHO DON'T CONTRIBUTE TO THE ECONOMY BUT REAP THE BENEFITS INCLUDING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. NO MORE LOBBYIST FAVORS. STOP THIS INSANITY NOW!!! IF GOVERNMENT IS NOT WILLING TO TAKE THE SAME HEALTH OPTIONS THAT YOU WANT US "LITTLE PEOPLE" TO HAVE FORCED UPON US, THEN IT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN. I WILL BE AT YOUR OFFICE IN GALESBURG ON AUG. 22 TO VOICE MY OPINIONS AND HOPEFULLY I CAN CONVINCE OTHERS TO ATTEND. IF YOU ARE NOT THERE I WILL GO TO MOLINE. YOU WILL START LISTENING TO US OR YOU WILL NOT BE IN OFFICE MUCH LONGER. I'LL HAVE MY WADERS ON SO I DON'T DROWN IN ALL THE CRAP THAT FLOWS FROM D.C.

What is the government going to do when the slow down in car sales comes after this program is over? Quit while we are still $2,000,000,000 ahead.

  • Jose - 3 years ago

The fear I have is the reduction (ellimination?) of klunckers (a.k.a. affordable used cars), and of the increased debt so many people are incurring. Is this the best we can do as a nation? There are too many things happening too quickly to clearly be able to track and understand it all. As a first generation American (Mexican origin), don't get me started on healthcare covering illegal aliens...

  • lazelle - 3 years ago

a perfect example as to why government should not run health care. I know lots of people who drive wrecks that a clunker would be a step up. If law makers really wanted to help out the poor they would allow 1 free clunker in exchange for a wreck or simply 1 free clunker to those who really need a car.

  • Vicky Massey - 3 years ago

Of course, people are going to take advantage of FREE money to buy a new car. But, how many of the cars purchased with the "Cash for Clunkers" money will be in reposession six months from now. Will we be bailing out the finance companies and banks again because people bought cars when they cannot afford to make payments.

  • Whylady200 - 3 years ago

    NO,NO,NO to HEALTH CARE REFORM!
I have no insurance, but I would just as well have no insurance, than to go the route the President is going.

I also wanted to mention the Cash for Clunkers. I know people who have worse cars than what they are destroying. They can not afford to buy a new car. Why not take these cars that are in good condition and have the best mileage and give it to poor people or sell them for a few hundred dollars. Let them trade their really bad cars in for them, to get the .real old, rusted, poor gas mileage cars off the streets. I thought that this was going to be for only American made cars. Can’t we do something that helps the American people and our country without always helping countries we can’t afford. Don’t you think it is time we stop trying to live us to the Jones?

Next , NO,NO,NO to US paying for Illegal Aliens insurance or putting them on SS. What is wrong with this country. We have Americans starving, homeless and we are so worried about others instead of taking care of our own first. Maybe, our Social Security wouldn’t be broken if the Government hadn’t borrowed from it, or paying for people who do not belong on it. Like Illegal Aliens.

I’m sick about the EAR MARKS in all the bills. We are in a Recession, people. People voted for a president who no one vetted. They didn't care what he was, is or will become and take our country with him. What happened to his going line by line and removing ear marks. I don't think he has read any of the bills either.

Shame on us, and shame on our Government!

  • susan - 3 years ago

whats wrong with doing rebates if thats all thats in the bill, then nothing would come back on tax payers. if we had more transparentcey (like promised) we wouldnt be so quick to judge.trusting in goverment programs is something i dont do lightly, and never will. they have proven time and time and that they cant be trusted

  • Whylady200 - 3 years ago

I don't own a Clunker either. I have a 1991 Toyota. It gets to high of gas mileage. Of course it has no air.

  • Terry From Michigan - 3 years ago

In response to monies being distributed for autos; if there is enough interest in car purchases perhaps unemployed people in many states as well as Canada may be able to get their jobs back. Thus, more money would flow back into the economy and fewer people would be on Government assistance programs. SAY NO TO HEALTH CARE!

  • Lori S - 3 years ago

I was excited to find out we did not own a clunker. We own a 1979 dodge truck, a 1984 ford bronco and a 2001 ford taurus. None of which is classified as a clunker according to the federal government. Out best car, the taurus, comes closest but gets too good of gas mileage.

  • Barbara from Texas - 3 years ago

STOP this insanity. It's not their money, it's our money and our children's money. This program will only help people who DON'T REALLY NEED a new car. And then, to destroy the cars!!! GIVE them to people who NEED them so they can go to work, to young people leaving foster homes, to students who need to get to college or jobs. As usual, government creates insane waste and then makes us pay for it. NO,NO,NO!

Brian, maybe you don't appreciate freedom, free market, the Constitution, America as our founding fathers intended it, but since you blindly follow Obama and his "Yes, Sir" congress, your grandchildren won't get the opportunity. Bottom line, this policy is unfair to the American people. Some are struggling to buy food, yet we're giving their money away to people who can afford cars. And yes, I could have traded my Jeep for the truck, since I bought the truck, I was offered the money for my Jeep. I decided to keep my Jeep anyway. Guess you read bills as well as our Congress.

Sorry, but "pseudonym" is ignorant. One of the requirements of the rebate is that you have to a replacement car gets a better fuel economy than the clunker -- this forces more efficient cars to be on the road. I could not trade in my Prius since there is nothing better than the Prius. See Edmunds: http://www.edmunds.com/cash-for-clunkers/stimulus-bill.html for info.

As for the Cadillac owner, if you don't appreciate the clean air, maybe your grandchildren will.

When billions of tax dollars are spent, I'd like metrics to see how it made a difference. The money spent on the war did not buy peace. The war cost over a trillion so far, and I only see more hatred.

  • Terry from Michigan - 3 years ago

I live in MI and I believe that the stimulous money should have been given to the People (costituents) to begin with not Special Interests. As you can see giving money and benfits to the people who need the leg up helps boost the economy. Look at the CASH FOR CLUNKERS response; look what happened in only 6 DAYS compared to 6 MONTHS! I rest my case. The Government needs to pay attention to what really works. God Bless America.

  • willie bugg - 3 years ago

My son(a car salesman) was out of work for over a year, they lost their home. the dealership here closed(GM). this town has lost 8 major employers in the last year, one moved to Mexico, others just closed. My son and his wife had to move to another state for both of them to find a job. WHY NOT USE 2BILLION OR MORE OUT OF THE 787BILLION THAT HAS NOT BEEN SPENT? WHY NOT USE COMMON SENSE FOR A CHANGE AND REFINANCE MEDICARE, MEDICADE, SOCIAL SECURITY, THEN PREPARE A PLAN FOR ONLY THOSE INSURED?

  • joe russell - 3 years ago

who takes the blame for any repos that occur. another bill to be paid, just like a mortgage.

  • Shane - 3 years ago

This is another bad idea from the Obama admin. Did anyone think about where the tax dollars will be going if they buy foreign vehicles? How many of you want your tax dollars to go China or Japan ? Because thats where its headed if you buy a foreign car through the cash for clunkers program. How is that helping jobs here or the USA in general ?

  • Matt Kearney - 3 years ago

Cash for Clunkers might have been a good idea in the beginning but after the time it began to the time the government ran out of money was way too fast. What happens when this $2 billion runs out? Are they just going to keep taxing the common person to help people "get a new car?" I'm 15 years old and I don't want to spend my life paying taxes to help pay back these rebates.

  • pseudonym - 3 years ago

The program does not help the environment that much. My 90 Wrangler gets 18 MPG, it is eligible for the trade in. I could buy a new truck with the trade in that gets 17. Just goes to show you how ignorant Dems and their blind followers like the previous poster Brian Gillingham are.

  • Joseph Kubik - 3 years ago

The only people who could benefit are those whose job is secure. We should use Stimulus Funds to get the economy going; the Stimulus Program is a bad joke with only 10% actually spent so far, most of which has been spent on anything but stimulative items (reducing state budget deficits is not economic stimulus) and the bulk of the funds are scheduled to be spent in future years. The timing of the spending is dumb; we need stimulus now, not in 3 or 4 years which is likely to be after the economy recovers on its own. All this shows how badly the Administration is handling the economy.

  • Audrey Chaney - 3 years ago

This is a bad idea all the way around. Next, we will have to have a bailout program for all the irresponsible people who traded in their "clunker" for a new car they couldn't afford, or pay for. Sounds like the 125% loans being given out to people who couldn't afford to buy the home, much less the furniture and non-essential items bought with the other 25%. What a joke!!!!

  • Brian Gillingham - 3 years ago

The cash for clunkers program needs to be extended because it is so good for the economy and the environment.

A measly $2 billion (compared to the $1,500 billion spent on the wars so far) has a great impact.

The environmental benefit of $2 billion more spent on more fuel efficient vehicles would save 15,833,333,333 pounds of CO2 in ONE year (given an average 15,000 miles per driver, new car is 9 MPG better than their clunker, and that a gallon of gas yields about 19 lbs of CO2).

The economic benefit is also something that you can NOT overlook in these tough economic times. Ford has seen an increase in sales for the first time since 2007.

Foxnews is stupid - most of it's viewers are stupid - and to see 90% oppose the plan to extend the "Cash for Clunkers" program is proof.

  • Shane - 3 years ago

I find it ironic that my tax money is going into cash for clunkers which is helping to pay for my neighbors and everyone elses new car but yet we cant aford a new car ourselves during these times. This just makes people go into more debt then what they are in already. How about giving the tax payers back some of those tax dollars to let them buy or save the way they wish to use it instead of our government?

  • Melinda Springemann - 3 years ago

No! They need to quit spending our money! I think it odd that Obama and Polosi come from the two states that are bankrupt. Is this a sign of where they are taking the country?

  • Melissa - 3 years ago

I believe it is one more example of government intervention in private enterprise. You cannot continue to throw money (taxpayer) at this problem.
It can't continue forever. It also hurts the used car dealer. We service people who cannot afford a new car and the payment that goes with it.

  • NE Husker - 3 years ago

No! Besides, we don't know what else they might sneak into such a bill. They can't be trusted-nobody reads the bills so they figure anything goes until recently when the folks becam more informed re the Obamacare bill.

  • David Kirkland - 3 years ago

The Government gave A.I.G., GM and Chrysler how much?? Yet the actual public gets only 1 billion? We get off Oil, Less Pollution, Newer cars, maybe they should only let people American cars.

  • Garry Hendricks - 3 years ago

I have visited several dealerships in the area and they have cars that are supposed to be sold but have been waiting for the money from when the program first started. Now they have approved it two more times. I don't know where the money is going but the dealerships in my area haven't seen any of it.

  • wayne baney - 3 years ago

how many billions will it cost us for g m and chrysler to sell their excess inventory from closed dealerships

  • Bill Meyers - 3 years ago

Are you joking? This is a no brainer. Congress has already given away $787b, and God knows how much more, and have we seen any benefit? This is nothing more than a redistribution of wealth, and frankly I don't have much left to redistribute. It is appalling to watch these arrogant so called representatives ignoring the desires of their constituents. All they say is this is not the citizens of their district, rather it is a planned attack against the proposal. They will find out in November 2010 when sopme of them come up for reelection.

  • Sunny Stiner - 3 years ago

No way should we extend the 'Cash for Clunkers' program. I agree wholeheartedly with the lady at the Specter Spectacle saying if they can't manage the cash for clunkers, how can they manage Health Care? My suggestion is that we taxpayers all trade in the Congressmen Clunkers and receive cash back. We don't have to worry about 'destroying their working parts' to make them inoperable...they already are.

  • scott dyson - 3 years ago

Finally the gov. does a good stimulus for the economy with the cash for clunkers. It is helping the consumer plus the car dealers who have been getting killed by the recession. Why stop a good program that is working? I don't understand why anyone would object to this program. It is a win win for everyone.

  • Matt Rubin (D) MI/OH - 3 years ago

Let me be clear. If we want to sell cars and boost the economy and keep people working so they can buy cars then we need this program going. This program shows that Obama is the best president there ever was. Obama takes care of the people. The people need to come first. Healthcare, jobs, cars, economy, enviroment. . .We gotta do what we gotta do. I am Matt Rubin from College Republicans.

  • Jeffrey - 3 years ago

Enough is enough. The government needs to stop spending our money. The cash for clunkers is just another example of the government stealing money from those of us who actually pay our bills and maintain our jobs.

  • rick morgan - 3 years ago

The spending has to stop. The nation will bankrupt if it keeps going.

  • pseudonym - 3 years ago

This is not just about a clear plan or not. The money the Government is using is taxpayer money, and not every taxpayer is getting the benefit, it is merely another example of redistribution of wealth. Why is my money being used so someone else can buy a new car?
