Advertising would have been welcome if I hadn't bought it already, because it would serve to me as a reminder. Maybe it can serve to others as well. But I'd stick with once every two or three days.

I think the amount of advertising so far has been fine because pre-orders just opened, and then maybe a few more tweets when it launches, but between now and then maybe just once a week or so...

Okay, the RSS Feeds already get updates for the book advertisements anyways. Every day I look at my feed reader and it tells me "1 New Post in Smashing Magazine." I always get happy because I love SM's articles. But then, in the peak of my joy, I see it's just an update of the book's article. It makes me cry inside.

It irritates me already. I read all your tweets. Once is enough for me, plus maybe a reminder after a week then another reminder a few weeks later. More than that, and I'm going to think you're spamming me and unfollow. I'd hate to do that.

I don't think the ammount of tweets we receive today about the book is annoying. It's one or two per day, isn't it? It don't hurt. You guys makes a great service offering great issues about design and web, so not at all, SM Book deserves it!

How about just sending me the book ;-)

I'm inclined to once a week perceived tweet. I think everyone's exposure is going to alter their views, so someone who has their finger on their twitter pulse will be far easier annoyed than someone who checks in once every day or two and skims.
I opted for "too much advertising is bad". In reality however I don't mind you promoting your book as I've got a lot of stuff/info from your website for free!
I think once every 2-3 days is way too much though. A couple of tweets at launch (plus an RT request) is sufficient. After that I wouldn't really expect to hear about it more than once every couple of weeks. And even then I would disguise it - eg: "sales of the Smashing Book going well" and perhaps some interesting info - link to a sales chart by country, sales figures, a behind the scenes/making of article.

It does already. Answer 1 it is.
I agree with the MyNextTrick's comment above...
I think option number 2 is OK
