Who picked these??? They all vamp so long you'll never even get to the theme before the conversation starts! Familiar is definitely better than uninspired!

  • Kristin - 2 years ago

AM - just saw your comment! How funny, I guess we have something in common.

  • Kristin - 2 years ago

My 13-month old is usually having breakfast in her high chair when "The Sound of Ideas" comes on, and she always dances to the music. I'd rather not change it, but I played the themes for her, and judging by her dance moves she likes Option 1 the best.

  • AM - 2 years ago

If I had to pick one it would be the first, but none of them have the same level of energy and interest as the current one. I will miss seeing my 1 year old dance around the kitchen to the current SOI theme.

  • kamden - 2 years ago

The only problem with #4 is the clapping--it reminds me of the ice cream truck jingle.

  • JC - 2 years ago

Gotta have love for Jurassic 5's "Canto De Ossanha" instrumental in #3.

  • George L. - 2 years ago

I prefer the current song to these new options.

  • hurstburst - 2 years ago

I am extremely excited that the theme song is being changed. I hate the current one so much I actually turn my radio down or all the way off when I hear it. I agree with some of the other comments that it is very jarring and like nails down a chalkboard. Love the show, hate the song.

My vote is for #4 or #6 but I'll be happy with whatever is chosen.

  • Kappy - 2 years ago

Keep the current theme. I like to air-guitar and air-drum to it!
Could you use some of the other edits of the current one - like the solo section that is used to close the show?

  • Martha - 2 years ago

I went with #6, but the current theme is much more spontaneous and alive than any of the 6 new themes which are sterile, monotonous, and BORING.

  • Pat - 2 years ago

I think the current theme is much better than any of these options. If you feel an absolute NEED to change it 4 seems better than the rest but none of these options are particularly good.

  • Nate - 2 years ago

I don't dislike the current theme but shaking things up a little feels like the right thing to do. Only two of the six options given seem appropriate for this show and several of the options aren't even musically appealing, period. My favorite was 4 but 6 is the only other appropriate choice. Option 4 just seems to have a more sophisticated, coffee-ideas-and-sunshine vibe. It contains some depth and while maintaining an uplifting tone provides for the possibility of controversy and bare-knuckles, intellectual debate that I always hope will come to fruition in the show.

I liked option 5 musically but it was too somber for a morning show. The hypnotic jazziness of the track reminds me of DJ Spooky's work.

Some additional options would be nice.

  • Jeff - 2 years ago

My favorites are, in order, 6, 4, 2. As a trombonist, I would like 1 although it is too somber. And I would like the horns in 6 to come in sooner. As for the current theme, it is OK but a change is fine by me. It has been said "If it ain't broke, break it". Personnally, I'd nominate the great Charles Watts/103 St Rhythm Band groove from "Express Yourself". I love the show - keep up the great work Dan.

  • Cheryl Engel - 2 years ago

Why isn't the current theme music included in the options? Why did "you" decide when you ask "us" to help pay for programming? I think many people voted for 4 because it is the closest to the current but uses inferior minor tones which are more depressing. I liked 6 for a change, but I still favor the current theme.

  • RSH - 2 years ago

I definitely like the idea of change. I don't love the current theme. But each of these is a little slow to start. I'd like to hear something with energy but not frenetic. #4 is the best because it has more energy from the start. Gerf's idea to give us some finalists with a voice-over is excellent. I would like to hear how much of the theme will play by itself before Dan begins to speak. Keep up the great work - love the show! Also have loved the promo where "millage puts me in a coma."

  • AE - 2 years ago

Sure, the others are good, but 2 is the only song you won't be tired of after listening to it for the 456th time in a row! 4 would be my next choice, but its mood makes me feel anxious, while 2 makes me feel upbeat.

  • avidlistener - 2 years ago

I admit that I commented out loud "what if you don't want to change it?" Then I read the comments and saw that I am not alone in the "like it the way it is" boat. I am curious that "No Change" was not an option on the survey though. Maybe that is just the statistician in me talking. If you must change it, I agree with Gerf in that it would provide the audience with a better sense of how the music will sound if the choices are overlayed with the show's vocals. Furthermore, as I see many listeners are advocating for a different set of 6 choices, overlaying those also would help us in our selection.

  • gky - 2 years ago

As above, the current theme is much better than any of these. That said, #2 isn't terrible. In any case, love the show, theme or no theme.

  • E. Allan - 2 years ago

I like the current theme music and hope keeping it is an option. It is upbeat and sets a strong tone. If you wish to tinker with the show please consider doing remote or on the street pieces. If the theme must change I prefer #4.

  • max meadows - 2 years ago

    Don't Change it.
It's the koolest theme song on the radio!

  • Dennis Szulinski - 2 years ago

I believe #5 is a better choice because--- ideas don't normally bust out. It's a process that builds rather slowly and over time blooms into something to discuss. Just as the #5 selection does. It doesn't blast you right off the bat, it builds slowly and blooms.

  • julie - 2 years ago

I am soooo glad you are changing themes. Your current tune, and the one before it were like fingernails on a blackboard; otoh, they certainly announce "9 o'clock and caffeinated" loud and clear.

I'm for #2 - and not just because I'm a bassist. It has punch and will be instantly recognizable. It will wear well. #1 is good once the trombone comes in but the percussion intro is a too long and indistinct. The others are just too easy-listening, they sound more like afternoon to me (note: I still miss the old xylophone theme for TOTN; the current theme sounds like your college roomate in the 70s who, "self-taught" on piano, works two chords to death. Sorry).

Interestingly enough, the 1st two choices are coincidental with two good friends marrying last week - a bassist and a trombonist!

  • S.L.T.D. - 2 years ago

It took me years to get used to the present one---it always seemed so abrupt and jangly---but now I like it better than all of these. I guess # 4 is okay. I agree with Brockway----can we vote on another batch?

  • Joan Zeeb-Roman - 2 years ago

I liked the theme song that you used BEFORE the current one. I was disappointed when you changed it because I really liked it. Maybe it was changed because of a change in the host. You should add the previous theme to the choices.

  • Brockway - 2 years ago

I agree with most here that, while I'm not in love with the current theme music, it still seems better than all of these options. Why not come up with a batch of 6 more to listen to - this time a little more upbeat.

If anything could should be changed - it should be that annoying sound after the station is identified and they say "the sound of ideas" then there's that sound - bitty boo boom boom. I really can't express it in written form, but I can't be the only one that's annoyed by THAT. It's EXTREMELY annoying and if anything should be changed it should be that sound effect.

I love the 9 o'clock show. The host is really great and I can't wait till I tune my computer to WCPN and listen to local issues. The tune #2 is professional, low key but exciting and makes the listener ready for the show. It matches mornings of Cleveland on sunny or cloudy days. I like it.
P.S. Loved the show today (Wednesday Sept 16th). We need to have more of these kind of discussion that shows where we need to go and develop our city to the point it deserves to stand. Wish some of the great callers would take more initiative in decision making process.

  • Cassie - 2 years ago

I pretty much hate the current theme. It is very jarring. The nine o'clock show is most often anything but exciting-- I usually turn off my radio soon after the show starts. Dan calls everything 'great'-- guests, callers, ideas-- and that's pretty boring. (I turn it back on at 10am.)

  • dr4lom - 2 years ago

I have to agree with the other comments. None of these seem to have the punch that the current theme has. The current theme has a lot of variety in where you set the lead in and at least from the samples available, I don't hear those possibilities.

  • Tori - 2 years ago

As I listen to all of these, I don't feel the excited buzz I get when I hear the current music. Not that the current theme music couldn't be improved upon, but when I hear it every morning, I get excited to hear the show.
All of these selections are a little too chill for an early-morning lead in, in my opinion. A few of them even sound sort of sad, but they all are markedly less energetic than the current selection. Minor chords and ambient beats are great, but I don't think they really reflect the show which is energetic and lively.
Maybe you could open up the contest to local musicians? Get a few more mixes up for consideration (and maybe get something a little perkier!)

  • Gerf - 2 years ago

I agree with AW: the current theme still seems to outdo these options, though perhaps it's because we're all so familiar with it! It's upbeat, informal, and energetic, whereas many of these options are much lower-key and muted. That in mind, I like options 6 and 4: they provide an energetic backdrop to the voices that will be spoken over them without being too "out there".

Maybe if you end up with two or three finalists you could overlay some generic "Today on the Sound of Ideas we'll be talking about ..." over them to give an even better idea of how the final product will really sound over the air!

  • AW - 2 years ago

The current musical theme can surely be out-done, but I prefer it to these 6 options.
