Because it's literally a SHAME that Whole Foods' CEO John Mackey has chosen to promote an extreme right wing/libertarian response to the health care crisis in this country. It's also entirely out of whack with his corporation's claim to promote health & wellbeing -- now evidently only for the well-to-do (or at least those of them who are lucky enough to be free of genetic predispositions to serious illnesses AND to have been spared passive exposure to carcinogenic & other toxic substances)!
Mr. Mackey's diatribe against the supposed majority of unhealthy people who have brought their misery upon themselves is ignorant, shortsighted, heartless, and disgusting, & leaves me with no appetite for the products sold in his empire (many of which I had until now routinely enjoyed).
And a glance through the extensive list of reasons to boycott Whole Foods has bolstered my resolve to resist the urge to step foot into one of his stores for the sake of convenience, for the one or two things that I can't seem to find anywhere else. (I'd rather just keep looking!)
I encourage all who share this view to join and uphold the boycott until and unless Mr. Mackey and his colleagues change their way of doing business (& making public statements), so that we might one day choose in good conscience to resume shopping at Whole Foods.
Sincerely,
Nancy Weissberg

The small business closures then impact the locally made products because although WFM claims to support local, in fact they impose such "policies" that make it impossible for small local brands to compete. Ask Mackey about; Free Fills, Free Testers (unlimited), free customer and staff samples (practically unlimited), free vendor demos, free vendor marketing plan, free vendor staff trainings, $2,000,000 vendor insurance, free unlimited returns without receips, time limit or even any proof at all that the product was bought at whole foods, free store returns of any quantity at any time, forced vendor discounts, they pay every 45 days (or you have a choice to take ANOTHER 5% off your invoice to get paid sooner), stressed overworked WFM staff to work with, intimidation tactics towards vendors from overworked pressured WFM staff....have fun doing business w WFM, they "support" local!?

When the likes of Home Depot/Whole Foods move in, many small, independent, locally owned businesses are negatively impacted and ultimately driven out of business. I predict that within a year of the new store opening in Noe Valley, San Francisco, at least three such closures will happen.
