How do you improve your design/development skills?

There definitely should be an option for practice, but I think it goes without saying that it's a part of improving your skills. So I'd have chosen "All of the above + Practice" if there was one, but right now among the options I choose online sources. I don't see why anyone would want to buy magazines for tutorials, when there are like, a billion tutorials online?

I picked the Communicate With Other Developers option. If there was a all of the above except "I don't" then I would have voted for that.

I'd say that practice, dedication and initiative would've been good choices as well.

To be is to do, if you don't do you won't be. I also think that forums are really good or do we call refer to forums and bulletin boards as blogs in order to be web 2 compliant?

collaboration with other designers and developers would be my top option... especially the team I presently work with. those relationships inspire and challenge me on all fronts!

There are other things than online magazine and blogs, like art communities? Your answers are too narrow.

    All except the last one.

  • Tinjaw - 15 years ago

    The first three.

I marked read online magazines and blogs but I actually I do all of this.

  • Ian - 15 years ago

All of them. Checkboxes would have been a better option, or just an "All of the above" radio box.

+1 for "all the above" option.

As much as I enjoy blogs and online articles, .NET is a great resource. It's fun to sit down and read a printed publication, and it's packed full of VERY useful content.

Practice...Where's that option..I don't believe any of the listed options will improve your skills directly...nothing beats experience

  • Martin Leblanc - 15 years ago

This is going to give misleading results. Why do you have to select one option only?

no sub for sketching even if you think it sucks. and there should be an "all of the above option"

People who don't learn because they feel their skills are good enough will never progress in their careers

training and practice and of course, to being on the edge, read online magazines and blogs...

  • hyoori - 15 years ago

practice is the best. but I also read online magazines and blogs.

  • Gordon - 15 years ago

I'm another 'all of the above' kind of person, and yes that should also include 'practice' too!

  • Misty - 15 years ago

I read online magazines and also communicate with a lot of designers and bloggers plus of course, I practice and scribble a lot

  • Kirk - 15 years ago

I, like Chance, was expecting a 'Practice' option. There's nothing like it.

  • Trisha Salas - 15 years ago

I agree, "all of the above" should be an option.

  • Janice - 15 years ago

Practice, practice, practice. Try something new and stretch your abilities. All the other options on the poll won't get you very far without a hands-on approach.

  • Michael - 15 years ago

I'd have to say both reading blogs and communicating with other developers... I get a lot of the posts and tutorials I read through twitter.

  • Nick Charlton - 15 years ago

There should also be an option for "all of the above". I think a lot of people both read blogs and online articles, magazines and read books on the subject. I don't think we could build up development skills without books, for example.

Like Chance said, practice is also important.

  • Chance - 15 years ago

    No option for 'practice'. ;)
