I have only shot my mouth off as much as you have Mr Smith. If you can’t take it don’t dish it. This is my world. Welcome to it.

So let me get this right. It’s okay for you to write that Viveiros is a liar, but it’s not okay for me to write that you are? Seems like a double standard to me. Is it because I’m a woman? I don’t support Mr Flanagan, but I wouldn’t call him a liar unless you are him.

And to think I'm getting paid is another wild ridiculous accusation by you. I’m just stating my opinion.

  • BDC - 15 years ago

    Mr. Smith,

It was me that used the word "hate" Since I don't really know you, I should not have used such a strong word...perhaps strongly dislike would have been more appropriate

I would like to clear one thing up, I can only speak for myself..but the comments I make come directly from my heart (sometimes, unfortunately ,bypassing my censorshipping brain) but I say these things because I deeply believe in CAV.

In no way would I ever accept payment for doing something or saying something that I truly believe in. This World and City have been good to me, I am not interested in being paid by anyone except my employer who is....most assuredly not CAV.

BTW--comparing attitudes, who is the name caller? Who makes accusations and unproven statements.

Yes, it is my opinion that Viveiros is just another liar of a politician. You have your opinion and I have mine--and just because mine is different from yours doesn't make me a liar, as you stated earlier, nor does it make me a person with a bad attitude about the race. Now, I do have a bad attitude when it comes to your postings, since you've shot your mouth off here and made unfounded accusations.

Keep on making your accusations--including the one about a 'female leader'. Nothing is further from the truth. Comparing PERSON to PERSON, Flanagan is still the better choice, even if he is inexperienced.

  • Chris J Smith - 15 years ago

BettyB--if you took the time to read ALL the comments you will see that BDC made the assumption that hate is in the equation. I repeat, it is not.

It is obvious, however that you and BDC would support her, so much so that it appears you're on her paid staff.

  • BettyB - 15 years ago

Who said anything about hate? Sounds like you have a guilty conscious Mr Smith. Do you perhaps have a problem with a female leader?

I am not spreading lies. Maybe I should start, many of the bloggers like spreading wild rumors.

Again, sorry but you continue to make faults statements it’s not just your opinion ---- your extremely bad attitude isn’t called for here.

  • Chris J Smith - 15 years ago

Hate? No. But I dislike the way she changes her mind so often, I dislike the way she plays up to special interests and single causes--and I dislike the way she always sided with Correia. That is until she saw discontent in the city, and changed her mind yet again.

Her act in the Corky Row area this past year was just more of a show than an attempt to do anything about the city problems. After the picture was taken--she disappeared yet again--after doing nothing but talking.

And you, BettyB, since you see the exact opposite of what I do, I guess you could also be called a liar--but I'm not calling you that. We have a difference of opinion--and your namecalling still isn't called for.

  • BettyB - 15 years ago

Sorry Mr Smith, I call it like I see it. Since I've been reading, you sir are the worst offender of lies and trash talk.

  • BDC - 15 years ago

I was trying to make the point that moving to Westport after living in the city for 50 years and having roots here, does not make her an outsider....perhaps the comment about Will's age was uncalled for and a bit over the top..And no, I would not have voted for Bob C.

I guess when it comes right down to it, even though I consider myself a lifelong resident, and love this City immensely, I did spend two years attending graduate school out of State, and three months in a small Apt. outside the city when I first got married...I guess by strict standards I am not a lifelong resident.

But my Mom lived and worked here her whole life as did my Dad....I went to public schools here as did my kids and now my grandkids...I always will be a Fall River resident in my heart and mind...so I think that CAV's 50 years here qualify her too. I think it is a non issue.

  • reality check - 15 years ago

BDC, Correia has lived in this city 40 years longer than Flanagan has been alive, Does that means you would vote for Bob over Will. What's the connection?

I do agree that she hasn't stolen ideas, just as Flanagan hasn't, although he has been accused by some. The fact that a candidate mentions something first doesn't mean they have exclusive rights to that thought or idea, or even came up with it first.

  • BDC - 15 years ago

With all due respect Mr Smith I will not call you a liar but I do know that you are misinformed. Nobodyh, and I mean nobody pulls Cathy's strings...I can promise you that.
It is true she lived for a short time in Westport and ran for office there....she is passionate about public service and thought she could help in her new residence. The voters thought otherwise.

But her roots are here. o doubt. she went to public schools here as did her parents and her own kids. She has lived in Fall River for 50 years which is about twenty years longer than Mr Flanagan has been alive.

There is NO way she steals other people's ideas either...if you look at the times and dates of her plans, they came well before Mr Flanagan...who really speaks in generalities. Except I would credit him with his "Green Park" idea.

It is obvious to everyone who reads what you write that you really hate Mrs. Viveiros. I am biased in her favor, but I don't dislike Mr Flanagan.

You disparage this woman much too much. I am willing to give Mr Flanagan the benefit of congratulations on a wonderful campaign. He may very well turn out to be mayor some day, but I think he will have to wait in line after Eric Poulin gets a few years under his belt.

    Not now...Not at this time.

BettyB--kindly keep your namecalling to yourself==it is unneeded here..

FYI, I DID meet 'Cathy', and she was not 'her own person' back then--and she won't be if she gets elected. She had her allegiance and her butt stuck to Correia's causes for so long that she forgot how to be her own person. Then, a few months ago she jumped a sinking ship and started to try to be 'her own person'. IT DIDN'T FOOL ANYBODY THAT HAD THE SENSE TO REALLY LOOK AT THE RECORD.

In this campaign she's taking other peoples ideas, changing one or two points to make them look original and proclaiming that 'SHE HAS PLANS'!

What we need is change--change for the entire city. If Viveiros gets in, all we will have is a continuation of Correia's ideas and strategies--and THAT we don't need. Nor do we need a liar--for example, with her saying she has been a lifelong city resident and forgetting the run for selectman in Westport and her residency over in that town in the recent past.

Or have you forgotten the first mayoral debate--and her going back to her notes time and again, looking for all the world like an idiot who can't remember her own words or ideas?

Viveiros is another Correia. She SAYS she'll listen--but the only ones she'll listen to are her husband and the power brokers through him. City residents will be stuck in the same rut we've been in for the past year and a half. Bet on it.

  • Betty B - 15 years ago

Mr Smith, You are a LIER. If Cathy's strings were ever being pulled she would have been mayor the first time she ran. Cathy is her own person. I think if you took the chance to meet and talk to her you would realize that.

I am afraid that little Will isn't going to cut it in this economy and I'm not willing to take the chance.

    GO Cathy!

    GO CATHY!

  • Chris J Smith - 15 years ago

Correia was a mediocre politician as a legislator--and an absolute failure as a mayor. He was too used to not worrying about where the money came from as a legislator, and figured it would be the same way when he shifted roles to the mayor's seat.

Viveiros is too much of a rubber stamp. Her record will come back to haunt her, and her little 'exhibitions', looking like she really cares and has plans for things are just that--exhibitions. If she is elected, I'm afraid of what will happen. She will have her strings being pulled by others--especiually the Karam family--through her husband.

I'm sorry, but her past record does speak for itself, and it's not pretty. It's a history of kowtowing and giving into the powers that be. That includes Correia--and if she becomes mayor--Correia may be appointed to a city job by her--not a pretty picture to contemplate.

Flanagan is a non-entity, true, but that means that he has NO ties to the controlling crowd in and around this city. He knows enough to get a good start, and contrary to belief, that may be good in itself. He doesn't know what past politicos have said 'can't be done', so he is likely to try--and succeed. He has my vote for mayor!

As a City Resident for 4 Years now, and presently in Stavanger Norway on a Work assignment I was Glad to Log onto the Herald today and see the Results of the Runoff Election. Congrats to Mr. Flanagan ( Who BTW was the Only Candidate to Knock on my Door and ask for My Support! .. You Won My Vote Right there! )
And Ms. Viverios and to all the Winners in all the Races. A Change is on the Horizon for Fall River! It is up to all of us Residents to Make that Change a Reality and NOT another Lost opportunity. Get Out and VOTE!!!!

while bob was a great legislature he didnt have any experience on how to run a city,so basically he had no experience as far as the local level neithe does flanagan, cathy does so i am going with her.

  • Flanagan4Mayor - 15 years ago

    Vote for Change!

  • BT - 15 years ago

SLFR, with all due respect this race has nothing to do with being a men or women. It about the right person for the job! Cathy has been committed to our city for a long time and at least she has experience. Unlike little Will that has a none existent record in politics and as an attorney. Look it up!!!!

    Go Cathy!

  • Gail - 15 years ago

Congrats to both Cathy Ann and Will Flanagan!

However, in a time like this I think we need someone more expeirenced and who is talking about the challenges this city is facing... Cathy has been making things happen between street clean ups, talk of to much public housing and renewable energy options! Cathy is my pick!!! GO CATHY!

  • SLFR - 15 years ago

I am a woman, but I won't support a woman simply because she's a woman. People need to think hard, not just be trying to put a woman in office because they think it's cool or whatever people are thinking. CAV needs to back it up with a proven track record, and I don't see that. Like it or not, it is still a man's world so she has to be even better. Yup, not fair, oh well, that's life. When I see it, I'll vote for her. For now, I'm giving Flanagan a shot.

  • BT - 15 years ago

The people of Fall River have spoken :)!! The next few weeks are going to be exciting!

Congratulation Cathy Ann!!!! Lets make sure Cathy Ann continues to fight for our city!

  • Laura - 15 years ago

I am very grateful that bob is out.
Will Flanagan seems like the man for the job!!!!!!!!

    LETS GET OUT AND VOTE!

  • BDC - 15 years ago

Thank you Fall River, You have spoken loud and clear.

Congratulations to the candidates who fought hard.

I'd especially like to congratulate Mr Flanagan and his youthful exuberance. It is difficult to knock off a sitting mayor especially as a new comer.

I support Cathy Ann Viveiros and look forward to the campaign ahead. After her first election to the City council as a young woman, she found herself where Will is now, and has never stopped fighting for what she believes in.

She has the determination and ability to make a great mayor. I;ll be out there fighting for the first woman mayor in our City's history.

But today is a day for reflection, and to savor the taste of victory for both camps.

  • thanks - 15 years ago

Thanks but no thanks. Bob Correia deserved to be voted out. He is crying about how it was the bad economy that did him in.... Yeah right. Although it is unfortunate that layoffs were needed, he had the opportunity to make up support elsewhere and didn't do it. He acted like a king on his throne and expected everyone to come to him. He could have done a much better job staying in touch with his community and working with people instead of big donors. Look where his $207k war chest gets him.
