Heck why don't we ban having a conversation while in a car too. I mean after all if you are thinking about what you are talking to your passenger about then you aren't concentrating 100% on driving.
Come on people...Talking hands free on a cell phone is no different than having a conversation with a passenger in your car. Lets get a grip on government intervention shall we.

People drive badly without any additional distractions. Simply put they either have not learned careful and courteous driving or they have never lost anyone in a car accident.
Even hands free talking requires thought which means the driver is not giving all his or her attention to the cars running stop signs, kids who are chasing balls into the street, other motorists who fail to signal a turn, etc.
Sorry I don't think it is fair to have to share the road with people driving lethal weapons while talking, texting, or yelling at kids.

If a ban is going to be put in place because it is distracting, then a ban should be put in place for applying make-up while driving, reading maps, books, newspaper, smoking etc. My opinion is that it should be on a case by case basis. What about the folks out there who are responsible and who has never been distracted. What if there is an emergency?? You never know.

Anyone that thinks they are aware of what is going on around them when they are driving and talking on a cell phone has to be young and don,t know any better or older and STUPID

I've seen people reading and putting on makeup in the car. Yet, those of us who talk hands-free on our cell phones are not a danger to others. People who show bad judgement should not be regulated by harsh government control. What will be next?

If cell phone is banned then so should everything...eating, drinking, putting on makeup, reading, listenting to music, putting in CD's the list goes on and on

Banning all cellphone use would certainly be too harsh. I agree that they can be very distracting (earlier this week I passed a young woman driving erratically with both hands resting on top of the steering wheel while holding her phone and texting) but what about the person who may cause an accident because they spilled coffee while driving, or drips ketchup on themselves while eating a sandwich, or even listens to the radio and becomes distracted while trying to change channels? Those things are, potentially, equally as dangerous and I'd imagine that more people do them because of the awareness that the media brings about the danger of cell phones while driving. I'm all for allowing hands-free but would also love to see a larger number of police be able to patrol streets and highways in order to crack down more heavily on non-hands-free offenders. But that would require much more funding for salaries so is, unfortunately, not very likely...

I think we ought to try banning all but hands free use. If that doesn't work, then ban all cell phone use.

Use of cell phone while driving only if hands free. See if that will work. I know it's terrible out there. People driving crazy, but the ones that are driving crazy have their hand to their ear. Lets try the hands free.

It's a law that is long overdue. My observations show that women are the worst abusers. I've seen them zooming around busy intersections and sailling through busy parking lots while gabbing on the phone. It needs to be stopped all over the country.
