Are you comfortable with Rep. Michael McMahon's position on health care reform?

Congressman McMahon does need to decide soon healthcare reform. He must keep in mind that 50,000 Staten Islanders are uninsured. He needs to realize that it would be wrong to tax benefits since it is really a tax on the middle class. Safety net hospitals do not receive enough reimbursement from medicaid and medicare already to cover costs so there should be increases in reimbursement or funding increases for DSH from Washington to cover costs. The only alternative is to cut services meaning less services for Staten Islanders who are already underserved especially on the North Shore. Finally, a Public Option would give us more choices to choose from and force the insurance companies who are making huge profits off of us and who are unregulated to play fair thus driving down premium costs.

For businesses, health care costs continue to rise. A way for businesses to lower that cost is to outsource to other countries. Without effectively lowering health care costs for businesses, more businesses will outsource. More people will be forced to pay for their own medical insurance or have none. So, McMahon should take his time and figure out a solution to help business and the American worker.

The bill is extremely complicated and the impact that it will have on us locally needs to be examined. While I support reform and a public option in general terms, I appreciate that the Congressman is taking his time with the details, talking to constituents and health care professionals and fully analyzing his decision. Give the guy a break - he's in a no win situation. If he rushed to support or opposed, he'd have critics screaming that it was a political decision.

If our representative has studied the proposed reform, he will have voted for it long time ago, and not do a "wait and see" game. He might as well well start to learn a practical skill and start looking for another job.

We NEED healthcare reform. As our representative, he needs to recognize that fact, and fight for the responsible reforms. A blanket 'vote against reform' is irresponsible and pre politics. Any no vote will guarantee thet his tenure in congress will be short.

Unless he wants to lose the election he should take a stand against the Healthcare Bill.
