My Grandmother's sauerbraten is my "gold standard" and I never saw her put gingersnaps nor (yuck) ketchup into it. Years later Gruen's was a close second and I enjoyed their version until it sadly closed. I found what is alleged to be the Gruen's recipe somewhere on this web site recently. It called for using a pressure cooker. I tried the recipe w/o a pressure cooker and it was very close to the taste of Gruen's as I recalled.
