Yup, another theory: Did Danzo cut a deal with Madara to somehow obtain the Sharingan from Shisui...and any other powers from Uchiha?
His job became the back up plan for attaining the Kyuubi.
He got what he wanted so that, in exchange for loyalty, he could keep Konoha under the Sharingan's control
No, no, no. Danzo just got caught with his pants down as he had everything to do with Akatsuki and ran for the hills. The Sharingan was a means to ensure he'd become Hokage.
