I understood you were going to review these on the air--why the change of mind? (I heard the doctors opinion. I'm sure that was available prior to the as stated question--no?)

I think the details and culture at home are missing from that very implied question.
I grew up in a European culture home. We always had a "sip" of wine at major holidays, when we were old enough to know there was a difference--an appropriate age. I grew up with "alcohol" around, and not being a big deal. There are a lot of details I can't fit in here, so leave it to your intelligence about various cultures, etc.
Furthermore, when I got to college, (still not of legal drinking age) I knew my limits and made no "accidental" mistakes. If one were to all of a sudden provide alcohol at 18-21 yrs of age, then you are asking for trouble, and many accidents from drinking an unknown substance (not knowing your limits.) The laws are for illegal, irresponsible use and actions.
The only families I am aware of being "tea teetotalers" and are successful in that cultural regard, has an entirely strict house hold in every regard--that's difference again. Again, I think the question is leaving out some details and as stated would be wrong, however is not likely how deployed in the UK.

At 18, my parents allowed us to drink at home in their presence. Taught us what to do and what not to do and control our intake. It was safer for us to drink at home instead of out with our knucklehead friends.

This is one of the craziest things that I've ever heard. Alcohol is known to to damage to the body so how could it be possibly be good to give underage and undeveloped brains alcohol. Those doctors need to lose their license for saying something so dumb
