Never realized that it has been 12 years since I launched my first website (along with Karan Gupta). So at the age of 23, I have been creating website for more than half of my life now :)

It's been off and on way back in time but I still remember my first website I made for myself was done with Microsoft Publisher....scary hey! That's worst that using FrontPage...lol.

By the way Bob... I see you had a Radio Shack model 100 ...that brings back memories with my Radio Shack TRS-60 computer that came with 16 K memory (lol) and my storage was a tape recorder.

I went into this to tide me over until I got a "proper" design job. Two murky years of web, CD-ROM and (wait for it) CD-i followed by fourteen years working on the web (plus some mobile and TV) later...

Got a Netscape 1.0 manual on the desk that I cherish.

My first commercial site went up in 12/1994. Only background color was gray. I did all HTML coding by hand in a text editor on a Mac. My first Internet experience was 1987 or so: CompuServe on a Radio Shack Model 100 with 300 baud modem. I feel like an ancient relic now....

This poll just made me realise quite how long its been!

1999 I started to teach myself HTML, 2000 I created my first website and got a part time job at a local web firm.

2002 started running a web business working from home.

So almost but not quite 10 years!

I learned everything on my own via internet! I've been doing this for 1 year. I am, and will continue to learn each day! In 10 years, who knows what will become of me - GURU :) LOL --> Check out my web comic at www.taptapdesign.com/tap_tap_adventures.html

3 or 4 years. Started out coding and tweaking forum skins, moved into plain HTML and CSS, now into PHP and jQuery too.

Anybody knows page mill? Version 1.0... Stopped using it immediatly and hancoded.... This was in 1994/1995....

  • Gregory A. Beamer - 15 years ago

First site was a personal site in 1993, shortly after it was supported by the UNIX host I was on at the time (all command line to do anything, erg). First commercial site was either late 1994 or 1995, after Al Gore invented the Internet (ie, opened it for commerce).

  • Lisa K. - 15 years ago

Somewhere around 14 years, off and on. I believe I started out with TeachText/SimpleText on my parents' Performa 600, then switched to PageMill, then to Dreamweaver. I prefer Espresso+CSSEdit now.

Roughly 2 years so far myself. I'm still learning so much so fast that every time I'm about to build-out my updated portfolio I realize how many better ways to handle the content there could be via new design techniques I've picked up.

  • Jesse Luna - 15 years ago

I built the first site in 1996 while I was a teacher. "Mr. Luna's Cyberhood" was a site where my students were able to additional info on homework assignments. Still designing them for work, freelance and fun.

  • Maryann - 15 years ago

I did my first website in 2000 when the PC game "The Sims" first launched. I got into making clothes for the game and wanted people to be able to download them and use them in their games. I checked out a book from the library on HTML and created my first site by using the book and Notepad. I was so amazed and intrigued that I took courses at my college and received a certificate. Stayed a hobby for a while, then I finally landed a job in the field and I love it! Amazing how things develop from nothing :)

  • Duncan - 15 years ago

First website was 1995, current business since 2007.

  • Joelle - 15 years ago

1996 is when I designed my first one, though it is, in hindsight, fairly hideous. :) Had our current business for going on 7 years now.

  • Steve Monosson - 15 years ago

I started designing web sites in 2001. Did it for a few years, then took a few years off. Back doing it again, playing serious catch up.

  • Pedro M - 15 years ago

11 years cursing IE and worshiping Safari, Chrome, Firefox 6 Opera :D

  • stian - 15 years ago

Started sometime in the end of the nineties, I guess. Started designing way back when there were no computers in the agencies or studios, only repro-cameras... Then came the Commodore (a toy), and later the Mac, which was nice because you could set type on it without ordering it from photosetters... Took a while before we could buy a scanner and start using photoshop and the other apps for real, but gradually it became what we did. The mac was REALLY expensive back then, a bad stationary machine cost more than 4 MacBook pros today, and that was without a screen (which mostly was black and white, greyscale if you were so lucky)...

  • Amy - 15 years ago

Wow 4 years. Hadn't thought about it but that feels like a long time now. Photog is still my first love though

  • Kumo - 15 years ago

I juste checked, my first web work (except Apple iWeb...) was a newsletter: november 2007 !
    :-)

Perhaps an additional extension of this question:
How long have you been designing the front end/interface of websites?
How long have you been coding/developing/programming websites?

I've been intrigued by the use of the term 'web designer' and all that could be included under that umbrella.
