I think it would be a bad idea for a police officer not to carry a taser.What would happen if a student had a weapon themselves,which happens in Shawnee schools more than people want to realize!!! The police need to protect themselves as well as other students and school facilty.
Most officers in Pott county carry tasers. A school can not stop an officer from carring a taser on their school grounds. It can not stop a taser from being used. All a school board can control is the contract with the officer. It doesn't depict what the officer does in an emergency situation. POlice department policy will always overrule the school policy. The officer is a city employee, not a school employee. The school pays the city. the city pays the officer. So the officer is bound by the city policy. City policy states the officer can carry a taser at all times in the city limits.
If police are going to work for schools on a contract basis, they need to have a policy about when and how they are going to use a taser to shock a student while being a school guard. othherwise schools have no say about police operations in their city.
State law gives officers the right to carry weapons in Oklahoma. The school board can't over rule state law. Besides Officers have to comply with a "use of force chart" if you take away thier tazer the next weopon is firearm. Why would you want to increase the likelyhood of an officer would have to shoot somebody to control a situation? Officers love having a Tazer because it decreases the chances they would have to use thier firearm. Take the officer out of the school and hire an unarmed security guard then everybodys happy.
