I think we should avoid the whole issue and just not call it anything -- kind of like when professors say "Call me by my first name," and then you never call them anything.

This decade is the "naughts". As in "twenty naught nine". Calling them the "aughts" is a folk etymology and a back formation. Or the "naughties". It's consistent with forms like 'nineties', but it sounds a little cuties poo.
