When you've got a house full of guests, a sink full of dishes, and a belly full of food...it's a good time to turn things over to Rosie the Robot Maid.
Posted by Daniel Foster on December 4th 2009, 6:31pm
Do I have to pick just one? It would be an even better party with all these robots!
If I had to pick just one....
C-3PO would be able to sing Christmas songs in lots of languages --- he is fluent in so many......Merry Christmas!
Posted by janet orzech on December 15th 2009, 5:07pm
Intellegent conversation, doesn't eat anything, and could be commanded to clean up the dishes AND go get more beer (even if the stores are closed) -- what more could I ask for?
Posted by Jen Thomas on December 15th 2009, 5:09pm
How sad would Marvin be if he didn't get invited!? A pity-invite is totally deserved.
Posted by L on December 15th 2009, 5:09pm
Definitely K-9! You'll need his help when those Daleks show up (those pesky salt and pepper shakers).
Posted by Martha Helmers on December 15th 2009, 5:09pm
That would be Data, of course ...
Posted by Jen Thomas on December 15th 2009, 5:10pm
Six, hands down. Those other little robots are cute and all, but let's be honest...
Posted by James Cole on December 15th 2009, 5:11pm
Perhaps Data should bring Number Six as his date...
Posted by Jonathan Gilbert on December 15th 2009, 5:13pm
Cameron Phillips from Terminator / Sarah Conner Chronicles would be a fantastic dinner guest, heck she could even spend the night.
Posted by 1Lastgoodguy on December 15th 2009, 5:15pm
Data, hands down, he is .... fully functional. :D
Posted by fhavas on December 15th 2009, 5:16pm
Optimus Prime could vanquish unwanted relatives when it was time to go! He'd have to eat outside though...my house isn't that big!
Posted by CCintheD on December 15th 2009, 5:25pm
All would be fun to have for the holidays, except maybe Bender. But it has to be Rosie with Data and Six as close seconds. Rosie was the first robot many of us ever saw on TV or in the movies.
Posted by Doug on December 15th 2009, 5:28pm
I'm a techno-nerd so more 'data' please:)
Posted by Bob Oswald on December 15th 2009, 5:33pm
No. 6 from Battlestar Galactica..I mean, intelligent..sexy..good-looking..AND a robot as well. At risk of sounding sexist, dare I say she would make the perfect 21st century "stepford wife"..
Posted by Peter Climes on December 15th 2009, 5:42pm
If Borg's count - I'm for 7 of 9.
Posted by Glenn on December 15th 2009, 5:45pm
Honestly, I think Bender is the obvious choice. He is one of those guys you would want to hang with. Riding the fine line between fun and an arrestible offense, he would keep life interesting. AND... best of all... his attitude is a lot like mine... and if you don't like it you can kiss my shiny, metal @ss!
Posted by G-Lump on December 15th 2009, 5:47pm
Data and Number Six are too human to be special guests. Rosie and Wall-E would definitely be very helpful to have around, but then they wouldn't be guests. I agree about Optimus Prime and the relatives. C-3P0 tends to be annoying too much of the time. I chose R2-D2 because we see eye-to-eye on so many subjects. It would be wonderful to beep and hum through a meal with him. Rosie's not the first robot in my long lived memory, but this reminds me that I should have voted for Gort. Now there's a guy who can take care of irritating relatives. It would be interesting to here how he liked working with Klaatu.
Posted by Raphael Angelos on December 15th 2009, 5:48pm
As an Italian man - I have to go with Six !!
As a techie - C3PO is my fav.
Posted by Louis on December 15th 2009, 5:51pm
Are you all crazy? Shawn Young from Blade Runner. No question.
Wall*E...he can play old movies, pick up the mess, and make entire cities from the rubbish.
Posted by D on December 15th 2009, 6:12pm
I voted for Star Trek's Data because "he" is very much like me (except I use contractions), that is, I am ruled by logic, have massive knowledge and abilities to absorb more quickly and really want to be more human by getting a repaired emotion chip. I very easily relate to him, which, if we are talking about human like robots companions (not like the ones I have built to perform manual, repetitive, boring tasks in manufacturing), these traits would be important to me.
However, those types of robots likely should not be created at all because they are more likely to become terminators (even with Issac Asimov's three rules installed) or, at a minimum, replace humans as companions which would restrict our growth as humans and be a bad thing in the long run. Humans would become more robotic (like the Borg) rather than the robots becoming more human (which would speed their conversion to terminators).
They are fun in fictional settings, good for expanding our imagination boxes and could teach us something about ourselves but, in reality, if we build them it would only be done to satisfy our need to play or become God. I have no desire to go there! Whether you believe in God or not, becoming God implies absolute, limitless power and none of us are able to keep that power from corrupting us and harming others.
When it comes to robot companions, I am definitely a Luddite!

I had to choose Johnny 5 (Short Circuit) because I like the way he says my name. :-)
Posted by Stephanie on December 15th 2009, 6:45pm
I picked other and voted for the little robot in Machinarium. There are so many in this little game including Cats, and Birds as well. Anyway, Merry Christmas TechSmith and to all a Goodnight! :o)

Danger...Danger....you will all be dead soon if you do not invite the robot from Lost In Space. If you don't believe me.....ask Will Robinson.
Posted by James Gibson on December 15th 2009, 6:56pm
Marvin - man, with an attitude like his, you have to feel you feel better about your own life. Just remember, over this holiday season, DON'T PANIC!!
Posted by Pt on December 15th 2009, 7:10pm
Spirit & Opportunity
These are the are true robots!
Posted by David Mott on December 15th 2009, 9:12pm
Come on, you can't be that young. Old school baby! The one, the only robot! Danger Will Robinson! http://lostinspacerobot.com/
Posted by john on December 15th 2009, 9:17pm
Gotta go with Number Six - spreading the BSG love. Still can't believe that show is over. :(
Posted by T on December 15th 2009, 9:30pm
Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet. It could cook, make whiskey (without causing a hangover), make dresses with real emeralds, create lightweight lead shielding, neutralize ray guns and navigate starships. Cooking the holiday turkey should be easy!
Posted by Bob on December 15th 2009, 9:35pm
I would kill for Rosie to be here! Well maybe not kill, but how cool would that be to have a maid bot?
Posted by Jan Schwartz on December 15th 2009, 10:11pm
Data -- Maximum logic, minimum drama...
Posted by JimE on December 15th 2009, 11:06pm
How can you forget to put ROBBIE the ROBOT on your list (Forbidden Planet, 1955)? He's the one who started it all, not to mention being the prototype for the robot sidekick for the Space Family Robinsons (Lost In Space)...
Posted by Zac Bolan on December 15th 2009, 11:19pm
Got to be Rosie! Life would be perfect with Rosie, well in a Jetson-perfect kind of way.
What happened to HAL? Definitely not taking him/it home.
Posted by Laurie-B on December 16th 2009, 1:09am
Data is cool and everything but I am afraid the choice is a bit skewed toward #6. I mean, yeah, the whole “out to destroy the human race” thing is a bit of a bug-a-boo, but if she wore the red dress I think I could find a way to get past it!
This is tough. I like Rosie but Data can cook too and do other things. He is gonna have to restore the relationship research he did but I could work with him.
K-9 is way cool but that pesky Doctor swooping in is kinda risky. Robby? Emerald dresses. Yeah, provided he brings the emeralds.
Johnny 5 for me - but only if he was as funny as his 1st film. Entertainment all round.
Posted by Alan on December 16th 2009, 6:33am
I would like to invite Kryten from Red Dwarf. He'd be in his element with all the washing up and it would be endless fun watching him try 'Lie Mode' again.
Posted by Lloyd K on December 16th 2009, 8:24am
I would pick WALL-E; This guy has a lot of HEART!
Posted by Eric on December 16th 2009, 10:42am
Obviously, the men are all voting for Six! :-)
Posted by Lyn on December 16th 2009, 12:40pm
How did Rodney from Robots movie miss the list? Use "Other" and gave him a vote...
Posted by Zip on December 16th 2009, 1:22pm
Rosie gets my vote for cleanup crew - what a great help to have over the holidays - more time to visit with family and friends.
Cheers!
Posted by Lori on December 16th 2009, 2:00pm
I agree that Spirit & Opportunity should be #1 because they are the REAL robots!
Wall-E. Christmas is all about kids and to me Wall-E is a kid who would enjoy the wonderment of the season.
Posted by picklemac on December 16th 2009, 3:51pm
Warning! Warning! Let's not forget who kept an eye on that sneaky Dr. Smith!
Posted by Whisp on December 16th 2009, 5:00pm
I don't normally like dogs but K9 is obedient, intelligent, loyal, does not need feeding and is house-trained. That will do foe me!
Posted by Richard Carabine on December 16th 2009, 5:34pm
I'm inclined to think Bender would be the most fun. Leela from Futurama described him as an "alcoholic, whore-mongering, chain-smoking gambler," which makes him a mechanical party animal. And he can actually manufacture his own beer internally, given the right raw materials.
Posted by NohoDave on December 16th 2009, 5:40pm
K9, because our house will be overrun with humans and out little dog could do with some company. (Yeah, that's the reason, nothing to do with me having first seen K9 on black and white TV back in the dark ages.)
Posted by Old Nick on December 16th 2009, 11:24pm
I like Johnny 5. He proved that gears and wheels and other mechanical things could live. Loved it!

Sa ai o prezenta virtuala de care numai tu sa stii este ideal de sarbatori.
Posted by popescu on December 17th 2009, 7:12am
What happened to the Granddaddy of all robots...?
GORT - from "The day the Earth stood still"...
He stands guard over your stuff and if you don't come back he'll blow up the world! You can't BUY that kind of loyalty!
Posted by Mickey on December 17th 2009, 2:03pm
Johnny 5 makes me laugh.
Posted by Beverly on December 17th 2009, 4:16pm
I gotta go with Glenn. 7 of 9's the only bot that warms the heart just to think about. You others may go with conversations, beer manufactures, translators, etc. but my vote has always been with 7 of 9 since I was captured and transfixed by that Borg. And versatile! Just think of all the things that bot would be capable of helping out with. Why she could...zzzzt. (smoke and acrid aroma here) pzzat-fzzzzzz...damn, there goes my pacemaker again.
Posted by El Geezero on December 18th 2009, 12:09am
PS: WHILE SOME REGARD THE USE OF ALL CAPS AS 'SHOUTING,' I ASSURE YOU, THIS IS NOT MY INTENT. RATHER, I HOPE YOU'LL BEAR WITH THE KEYBOARD LIMITATIONS QUADRIPLEGIA IMPOSES. THANX.
--------------------
DON'T HAVE A GRAVATAR TO ADD YET. HIT THE SAME ERROR TWICE IN A ROW. WHICH ROBOT WOULD I INVITE ? SIX, DEFINITELY ! AND OF COURSE, I'D HAVE THE K-Y ON HAND, IN CASE THERE MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH ANY JOINTS.
Posted by LEFTY on December 18th 2009, 12:48am
I would rather have fun with Bender than have a clean house. So Bender for Cigar Smoking, Beer Drinking, Whore Mongering, politically incorrect actions... etc.
Posted by Bradford Benn on December 18th 2009, 2:04am
I picked Rosie, ( out of love ), but please, pretty pretty please, can I also pick Data ( out of lust !!)
