How many pixels do you need?

Jeff- I'd say it definitely depends on what sized sensor you shoot with. Most point & shoots hit the wall (law of diminishing returns) around 6-8 mega-pixels despite what the marketing geniuses try to tell us. For an APS-C sensor, the magic number seems to be in the 10-12 range and a full frame sensor is around 18-20. Of course this is using today's techonolgy, so things will change no doubt.

I think the camera manufacturers are getting the message also as several recent 'new-releases' have gone down or at least maintained pixel counts. They have instead been focusing on reducing noise and increasing high ISO performance, much to everyone's delight.
