How many drafts of a piece of fiction does it take before YOU consider it any good?
One. I do a lot of prewriting and I draft carefully, so my first drafts are pretty advanced.
Two or three. My first drafts suck, but once I've tidied things up once or twice, it's not too bad.
Four or five. I focus on a few aspects each draft and by the fourth or fifth draft, it's looking good.
Six or seven. Some of those are quick drafts and some are slow, thorough drafts, depending on what I need to fix.
Eight or nine. I totally agree with Gladwell. My drafts just suck until this point.
Ten or more. I'm a perfectionist; I'm just not going to be happy until every tiny detail is perfect.
