Amen! God helps those you help themselves! I agree that far too many people use the system that I - a tax payer for over 40 years have paid into. I think it is about time that people who receive welfare work for it and are held accountable for pulling their own weight in society.
Acrosss the entire United States this country needs streets cleaned, trash picked up, bridges repaired, buildings built and roads built or repaved. Welfare receiptants should have to work for their income just like the rest of us. They should be required to work on National projects like those listed above. They will feel better about themselves if they worked.
I don't understand why we the American tax paying people continue to provide entire apartments to those on welfare and subsidize the rent and all of the utilities. We should build facilities that give those who don't want to work one room to reside in with one kitchen for all to share and not be funding entire multi-room apartments including utilities to those too lazy to work.
I am not speaking of those truly ill and unable to work, I am addressing all those who abuse our welfare system.
And, yes I believe that they should be drug screened if they are receiving welfare money. Enough is enough.

These are REAL PROBLEMS....REAL PEOPLE....REAL LIVES! ALL PARENTS should take more interest in their childrens education! And guess what HALF of the wealthy parents do not attend their childs school conferences...or PTA Meetings....or Open House! I'm a VOLUNTEER at a local school and I am there every single day all day long SO I KNOW! But your answer is to punish the poor? Yes of course, because that would justify everything for you wouldn't it! People JUST LIKE YOU have been laid off from their jobs through NO FAULT of their own! I have mixed feelings about Bauer's comments and beliefs. As a single mother of 2 children, I completely disagree with the comments about parents of children who eat free lunch. I get no child support and work a full time job to pay rent, provide transportation, buy clothes, and put food on the table. I am not able to afford to pay the almost $2.00-$4.00 a day for two kids lunch and breakfast on top of that so they get free lunch in school. If I was required to go to regular conferences, then I stand a chance of losing my job because I still have to take off for Dr appts, dentist appts, and when they are home sick. At the very least, I would lose hours which pay the bills. I understand some take advantage of the system, but some of us REALLY need it. Furthermore, how are you going to punish the children by making them starve (keep in mind they are required to be there 6-8 hours!) because the parents do not make a meeting? Some of these kids do not even get a meal at home.
On another note, Bauer did have an extremely poor choice of words for making his point. I do and have always agreed that the system is broken and needs to require some sort of accountability and responsibility from people on wellfare. In fact, I went to get help once when I was unemployed and had no permanent home and was told by the caseworker that if I worked AT ALL I did not qualify for welfare assistance. So that tells me, if I want to sit on my tail and do nothing with my life, the government will help me and keep me going. But if I try but just fall short of being able to manage a household, I get no help. I walked out without even applying because I had every intention of working. So when this is the message people get, why not live off taxpayers? In my opinion, a system does need a lot of work and something needs to be done about people who take advantage. But it also needs to work for the ones who need just a little bit of help that do for themselves and the best they can for their families!
While Mr. Bauer's metaphor may not have been the best one to use, I totally agree that the welare system needs to be fixed. What is the metaphor "Teach a person to fish and he will be able to eat for life"?. I can't remember exactly how it goes, but it means teach a person how to make a living instead of handing out free money. We hand out to the same people's family generation after generation. There should be some rules for welfare reciepients, just like the people who work for a living do.
RIGHT ON, MR. BAUER!!! You have the right idea.

I think if the Parents are able health wise that they should have to attend the
PTA meetings and Take a active part in there Childrens education. From all of the comments above it seem that everybody thinks that this is about race.
IT IS NOT He said poor, not Black, White, Hispanic. People need to quit trying to make a racuial issue out of every thing that a Person say's. And if you don't have any thing better to do , go get you a job and quit trying to make a mountian out of a mole hill. And this unempolyment department needs to be worked on . When did unempolyment benifits check get to where it pays not to take a job paying minium wages , becasue they get a check for more from unempolyment. I Don't have a problem with people drawing unempolyment if they are activyly looking for work . they don't have to have anyone sign a slip stating that they actiualy came and talked to them about a job all they do is when they go online to sign up for the week is put down a couple of places and thats the end of it . I think the whole system needs fixing not just one part. It is like nobody is accountable for anything , they do what they want and the forget about the rest.

This is not a race issue! Black people are not the only ones on welfare. I've been saying for years that people who receive welfare should have some requirement other than collecting a check. With all the school shootings and disrespectful behavior that children display these days, it's the least welfare recipeients can do. They need to be involved in their children's education! A good education is the key to getting off wefare! I'm only speaking about people receiving government benefits who are not working. Parents with reduced lunch should not be included. At least they are employed. I'm tired of my hard earned money paying for food stamps, WIC, and section 8 because some people are too lazy and irresponsible to get a job and support the children they chose to bring in this world. Truth be told, mothers on welfare and section 8 should be required to be on birth control. If you aren't working, you shouldn't be allowed to lay around and have more children on my tax dollars. I don't care about your rights, what about the rights of the working class?

I totally agree it is a very sad day in South Carolina. Not all but a high percentage of parents depend on, and expect SC schools to raise their kids. The parents hold the teachers and schools responsible. What's wrong with the parents being held to some responsibility for once. I Love the idea of anyone on government assistance/support should have to get drug tests as well. The idea of assistance is to help one improve their lives. So why should one be angry over taking drug tests if they truly want to improve their lives. Anyone with a job has to take drug tests. A check is a check rather you work for it or not. It's only fair that anyone who gets a check should have to be drug tested rather it be a free check or one that you have worked for.

I agree whole heartedly that abusers of the welfare system should be required to do these little things in return. Although I dont believe the children should be punished for a parents actions.
The welfare system itself should have more standards such as drug testing, YES!!, and how about the recipient giving back by working free for the city doing jobs such as school crosswalks, trash pickup/cleanup, city park maintenance/cleanup, etc etc, some kind of work, doesnt matter. Maybe alot will figure if I have to work to receive welfare, why not work a normal job to receive more money? Might work for some.
Audrey - 2 years ago
If the welfare system is broken then fix it. There is no reason to demean the recipients. This type of rhetoric is mean, and does nothing but create misplaced blame and animosity for an imaginary enemy. No one wants to be on welfare. And no child should be singled out for participating in the free lunch program by singling out their parents. Now when South Carolina's unemployment rate is at an all time high, we need to be coming together with solutions instead of spouting insults and generalizations.
Creating a work program in exchange for benefits, imposing drug testing, both seem feasible and reasonable. But comparing South Carolina's poor to dumb stray animals is just plain hateful and manipulative.

Lt. Governor Bauer's choice of words may have been poor but he makes a good point. The cycle of welfare dependency needs to be stopped. One way to encourage people to get off of welfare would be to make them earn the benefits they receive from the state and/or federal governments. What that method of payment is needs to well thought out.
We as a caring nation should help the truly needy but free giveaways for life are not the way to help them, their dependants, our nation, or the world. The saying “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime” should be applied to our welfare systems.

Totally AGREE...I'm with the others who say "why did the NAACP think he was talking about black people".....it's funny Bill Cosby can say things like that about black folks....saying it's time for them to step up and go to work and be good mentors for their children....I'm by no means a racist, I'm tired of ALL the people who stay on welfare and never go to work....I'm tired of paying for them to sit on their rear ends when I have to get up every morning and go to work even though I have a disability....if I never got up and tried to do better, what would my children have done, but think that's the way the world goes around and their lives would not be any better....I honestly don't know how people forget what God said in the Bible about working.....no work, no food!!!
I do anything I can to help people who need help....that's what God says to do....but most people on welfare don't ever try~~~

I agree with Lt.Gov.Bauer's comments...The words he said was only to make a POINT, not referring to any race or kids.. His point is to adults who's dependency from the government has put them in a comfort zone of daily living..Why work when the government will take care of you is the attitude of many now days.....Cutting out some government spending will help our economy.....Lt. I agree 100%. I think it's about time someone said something about wellfare beening abused. Maybe America should stop babies from having babies. In order to get wellfare you can't have over 2 kids. If you have another give it up for adoption. Children need a better life, then just to be born so the Mother can get a check.
I totally support Bauer's statement! It is about time someone had the nerve to speak the truth. The NAACP should stop making everything a racial issue when there is none to be made!! I see how the system works everyday in my profession as a teacher. We have "free lunch" bills that are up in the hundreds and bills are sent home to parents every week and never paid. But it amazes me that these kids have money to buy pizza, ice cream and expensive shoes though. And the rate of free lunch parents that actually show up for conferences? about 22% in my experience.
Lt. Bauer has my vote!!

I totally agree with Andre Bauer. It is about time someone spoke the truth. And why is the naacp talking. He did not say anything about race. It is just all people taking advantage of the programs. He is not saying take away free lunches. He just want some accountability. Before this year there has always been jobs. But why work when the goverment will send you a check. There is a lot of people that have gotten it and it has helped them back on their feet. But you should not live on it the rest of your lives. i wish we had more politicians with that much boldness. I agree 100%. If you get some kind of handout you should have to be monitors and you should have some strings attached to be able to get it.

Why does the NAACP feel the need to get involved in this. It is not a racial issue but an issue of ANY person trying to take advantage of the issue of welfare. Just because they have children does not give them rights to abuse the system and they should be willing to take any test needed especially because they are parents. Being a parent does not keep you from obeying laws and regulations when the rest of us clearly abide by them! I am tired of hearing about people wanting free handouts when there are jobs out there to be had.

Yes I do agree, parents do hold personal responsibility to the school educators if recevinig public assistant. It's becoming a sad day in South Carolina when any issue discussed can be turned into a racial issue by the NAACP in South Carolina. I wonder if the NAACP is this active in other states concerning non racial issues such as this one? Hmmmm I wonder if it all boils back down to the flag issue in South Carolina? I do agree with Andre. THIS IS NOT A RACIAL ISSUE, but it seems that the NAACP wants to make it one.

this is not about race but more about making people show that they need help an not just lazy an want to live off of the gov.

I totally agree with Lt. Bauer's comments. Welfare parents with children should be held accountable and required to attend PTA meetings. He did not mention race, whatsoever, so I wonder why the NAACP felt obligated to conduct a news conference. The cycle gets repeated generation to generation because we, the STATE, gives funds to people without any accountability. It is long overdue that someone in state government have the guts to speak up!

When my children were in school my wife and I attended parent-teacher conferences because we were interested in our childrens education. Why should the parents of children receiving free lunches not be interested in their childrens education. Require them to attend and if they don't attend, punish them, not the child.
Ann - 2 years ago
I think all parents should be required to attend an Open House or meet with their child's teachers each year. Why is this being made to be a racial issue? This issue includes all races. If you are legitimate in needing assistance and want better for your child then you should have no problem with meeting regulations. You want educators to prove themselves why not everyone else. I agree with Andre Bauer but feel it is have taken out of context and blown out of proportion by the media or others.

Yes they should be required to attend parent-teacher conferences. They probably don't come so people will not see their new Cadillac.

It is a proven fact that a welfare child will tend to lean on the way their parents got through life and be in their footsteps and if the naacp wants to help they should help and encourage these poor folks to do all they can instead of being a shield for them,I for one am tired of hearing these excuses!

IT IS ABOUT RACE. THE HUMAN RACE!! WHITE, BLACK, YELLOW, PINK AND PURPLE!!!!!! ALLLLLLLLLLL RAAAACCCCEEEESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT NOT A ONE IS SINGLED OUT, SO THIS ISN'T FOR THE NAACP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree 100%!! I am a retired nure and could write a book about the abuse of medicare & medicad in the medical perspective. Tommy, you are right about them driving their cadillac "Gold Limited Edition" AND their new Hummer.
You would be shocked at some of the stories!!
I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!!
Gov. Bauer stood up for our state government and said what no one else has said to help our economy.... ..Lt.Gov. Bauer, you have my support...

I agree with him. Thes parents need to get off ther butts and stop spending ther money on drugs and beer.
Your question did not fit the comment he made, and was not even close. No I do not agree with Andre Bauer.
Sharon.
I support what Mr. Bauer said 100% and feel that we have a dire need for more politicians who think like he does.
I totally support Bauer's statement! It is about time someone had the nerve to speak the truth. The NAACP should stop making everything a racial issue when there is none to be made!! I see how the system works everyday in my profession.
Lt. Bauer has my vote!!
I think that all parents should go to a parent teacher conference, especially if they are asking/receiving additional help from the school in the form of free lunches.
I'm tired of our local stations being so bias..Everytime the naacp speaks its gold..Even on FOX 21 their poll is 325 for baur and 105 against and they say BAUR is in trouble with the people do they even read their own polls..Stations here are so scared to report the truth.
Go Andre, Amen
I totally agree with Mr. Bauer, it's about time some one spoke out.
i am a retired state employee and noone is feeding me. get up off your lazt butts and fix the kids something to eat in the mornings. they also make pop tarts and cereal. keep standing up for yourself. i get urine tested on my job. what you got to hide, anyway.
I agree with Bauer totally!! They are so many people who abuse this situation, yet it is not fair to the hard working citizens of SC. The NAACP needs to stay out of this and mind their own buisness!!! What ever it may be..!!!
I don't agree because all students that recive free or reduce meals are not on wellfare and it seems that these days that the ecomny s down you are going to have more students signed up for the program. For some student this is the only meal that may get.
Why does the NAACP think they have to come unraveled about his comment. He said NOTHING about any race of kids. They only reason I can come up with, is they must feel like it's hiting very close to home.
