thats one reason apple is growing very fast
they up to this point at least are not supporting the concept of a "virus"industry
like it or not there is much a company can do to stop rampant virus outbreaks;but alas
it is a multi billion dollar business to let them flourish
Such unscrupulous activity is being rewarded to make a product to meet a self allowed
    demand to always be there.
If there was the will viruses could be mass innoculated against with a little needle to companies profits that thrive on products just itching to catch cold or influenza whenever little Johnny is allowed to blow his nose after playing pirated games and other dubiously acquired malware which presents on the outside as squeaky clean. The temptation for Johnny left unsupervised is too much for him to handle and not only doesn't he wash his own hands but shakes hands with others ;no wonder his trojan like activities are not stopped dead in their tracks.
The race to the bottom needs to be reversed or whole economies will be in jeopardy.
Apple here sets an example to follow.

i have VirusBarrier X5 on my MBP and do a scan every few weeks and when i got my father a MBP and an iMac i got him X5 and he just recently updated to X6. i think that even though there aren't any threats now doesn't mean there won't always be. i would rather spend 30 bucks (got it in an awesome bundle) now and be prepared then have to run out and spend 50 later if something does happen.

Ditto. I was using ClamXav and scanned whenever I was concerned about the occasional shady usb drive. Now I use VirusBarrier that I got free from probably the same app bundle as Don Parr. It just runs in the background.

I got Intego VirusBarrier X5 (now running X6) via one of the app bundle promotions. Prior to that I ran ClamXav. One can never be too careful these days is what I'm thinking?

Only because to use the university network, I have to use their antivirus
