I had a very difficult situation with aupairinamerica where my au pair was having a nervous breakdown. She apparently was suffering from manic depression and my counselor did nothing about it but said "she needs time to settle in." Well the girl was crazy, crying all the time and freaking out. She refused to dress the children and they were afraid of her. Only when we took the au pair to the psychiatrist did the agency do anything for her. Agencies need to not only take charge when these things happen, and they do happen, but they need to spend money on training of their staff so they can recognize the symptoms of a mental breakdown.
