I don't have a job description, however, I am in a tranistion to ministry internship at my church. Perhaps that means some slack is out there because I'm the pilot for this program? Perhaps this will change when I send a request an evaluation to my pastor? :)
Although I have a job description, it was written for a part-time position of 20 hours per week. When I took the job, I did so with the understanding that I would only be working 15 hours a week and the job description would be changed. Ultimately, I have to decide what I am able to complete and hope that other staff members are understanding and can do what I can't.
At my previous church, under 250 members, I did not have a job description. I only worked 20 hours a month, which consisted mainly of supervising youth events. The benefit to not having a job description is that is gave me the leeway of not having to commit to taking on more than I could balance.
The schools I have worked for have the same discrepancies in job descriptions. Depending on the job title, staff may or may not have a job description.
There are benefits to having or not having a job description. As job seekers we need to know what we are comfortable with, and consider job descriptions or lack there of, during the interview process.
@Geoff - that might change but it might also provide you the opportunity to write your own job description which isn't so bad.
@Ryan - sorry man, that is messed up!
I do have a job description, it says you are the catch-all of the church. Anything the Sr. Pastor does not do, you do!

Thanks Jennifer for your response!
