Love Rushmore, Out of Sight and Simple Plan from that year. Outside of Lebowski (which is one of the best movies ever let alone '98), I had to give the edge to Rushmore - just love the story, the acting and the feel of that movie.
I voted for Out of Sight, because that is one of my favorite movies, but I'm gonna put A Simple Plan out there, because that is a truly great film that doesn't get enough credit.

Also, good call Tripp Burton on Little Dieter Needs to Fly

Goddamn, it really is insane how far superior 1999 was to 98 when looking back...
In any case, I definitely agree with above posts regarding The Truman Show and Pi. Also a few more that were overlooked, IMO: Halfbaked, Run Lola Run, Safe Men.

It has to be Rushmore, even if Lebowski is still on the table. Sorry, Dude.

I forgot about Happiness! I had to go with Dark City, but Rushmore and Shakespeare were right behind. Happiness, though. Right from the first, devestatingly painful scene.

Hard to choose between SPR and Rushmore. I had to pick SPR.
I wish Lebowski was still on the table..... :-)

The Truman Show is definitely the best film of 1998. Like few films before it or after it, The Truman Show is completely unique. Its a rare film that's more relevant today than ever before, and beyond the sci-fi social themes explored, the film brilliantly explores the nature of humanity and individuality and even parenthood.
Shakespeare in Love is one of the five greatest screenplays ever written, and it was made into one of the top five rom-coms of all time. Sorry Adam, but cannot consider any film with Jennifer Lopez seriously.

1998 was a good movie year. I really liked: Gods and Monsters, Hillary and Jackie, The Truman Show, Happiness, The Spanish Prisoner, Pleasantville, The Opposite of Sex, Simple Plan
I had to go with Dark City, but I do love THE CELEBRATION and RUSHMORE-- of course Lebowski is on a level all it's own.

Other (part 2): I didn't realize THE CELEBRATION was 98. That takes my top spot, then HAPPINESS.
I'm with Matty on Wild Things, really fun stuff. Plus you get full frontal Bacon... and thanks to that, me and my friends had a lot of fun with the joke/phrase "that's a side of Bacon you ain't ever seen".

The Truman Show. Totally ahead of its time and more topical than ever before.

Dark City. Though I almost picked Other, due to my love of Babe: Pig in the City, and Cube.
gotta go with American History X
