Coulter is a bully. Her thoughts are hateful, demeaning, abusive, and actually encourage violence because the targets of her ridicule and hate are not given the respect due another human being. Haven't we been encouraging and enabling our children to speak up and stand up against bullies in their midst? This isn't to abrogate someone else's right to free speech. It's because we recognize the danger in allowing such hatred and intolerance to get a foothold (Hitler) from which to spread, that we now censure these abominations. She's nothing more than a bully and I find it sad that her ilk is encouraged and in fact PAID to infect the weaker minded countrymen and women.

We must stand up to the bullies and haters or man and society will surely regress to a less civilized state. (Like the State of Alberta? Just kidding, I know that's a generalization!) Enlightened laws are a tool that assists us in that difficult challenge.

i was really disapppointed with those ottawaites. halting someone's speech (even if it is anne coulter) through intimidation is no way to go about disagreeing with someone's view's (even if it is anne coulter). perhaps they would have been better off doing something productive like lobbying for better (or even, god forbid, universal education) so that one day down the line there would be sensible people in this country able to better handle an intellectual interaction with turning into a mob.

  • jose - 14 years ago

of course not, just let her cry out loud so people can hear how ridiculous her remarks are.

The sad thing was only a dozen people showed up to protest in Calgary compared to several hundreds lined up to see her.
how indifferent people are these days.

We all need to be reminded that our way of looking at the world and doing things is not the only way, and not necessarily the best way. Civility counts. The whole incident demonstrates Canada's aversion (or at least the aversion of many Canadians) to "shock jock"politics and public discourse which the Harper government happily seeks to import from the USA. Freedom of speech is a fundamental liberty. In Canada freedom of expression stops when the speech incites hatred against identifiable groups. Canada has laws against incitement to hatred. No one should barge into someone else's home and act with insensitivity to local differences. Next time take off your shoes before coming into the house.

Ann Coulter didn't come to Canada to spew hate or, God forbid, incite violence, did she? You bet she did.

In the past she's said that the USA should 'roll over and crush' Canada. Iindicating that she has no idea how geographically huge Canada is.

Does anyone know why Ann Coulter hates Canada? Perhaps her excessive splashings of hydrogen peroxide
have destroyed her brain, leaving a nasty bleached-out wreck whose big yap endlessly spews hate.

I congratulate the Provost of the University of Ottawa and the 200 students who put a lid on Ann Coulter.
She's no better than Ernst Zundel whose hate speech got him deported from Canada.

Sorry - line should have said " As long as she "ISN'T" pushing her agenda down my throat, etc....

  • Beverly - 14 years ago

Well I personally don't like her. I have tried to listen to her viewpoints on talk shows but she literally talks over people and I turn the channel. If she wants to speak here or wherever - so be it! I won't be in attendance. As long as she is pushing her agenda down my throat I don't care and neither should any of you. Move onto to something worth discussing people.

Canadians did practice freedom of speech when they spoke out against her lecturing there. If prohibiting a high ranking person from speaking their mind is a loss of the freedom of speech, then what is it when we chastise those who didn't want her there for speaking their minds and thoughts? It is still freedom of speech being practiced. The more influential speakers were those who shut her down. Freedom of speech includes the freedom to protest somebody else's views, and that is what they did. Here's to freedom of speech.

I really love the food in Quebec. The island just off of Toronto is wonderful. Lake Louise and Banff are simply breathtaking.

Thank God I'm an American citizen. You Canadians seem to value order over Liberty. Do you serfs enjoy your chains?

... when you write, "you Canadians", do you realize that your marginalizing millions of DIFFERENT people and millions of DIFFERENT opinions. Its pretty condescending. But it fits. "Thank God I'm an American citizen"... wow!

You must feel really clever.. lets complement "the Canadians" only to insult them later by labeling them as serfs. Do you have any idea what is going on in your own country?

Put the bible back up on the shelf.. settle down now, just put it away for the afternoon, and read a newspaper, a book, a magizine. Educate yourself.. dont go on Wikipedia and cut and paste words like order and liberty and serfs.

If you were trying to upset someone.. mission accomplished, im upset that evolution doesn't seem to be working.

dUDE is apparently one of those weak and fragile Canadians. You're pitiful dUDE.

  • Sphynx - 14 years ago

@ dUDE: "Canada has free speech, in fact we have something better than free speech. In Canada you cannot preach hatred or racist remarks. We don't have time for her bigot ways and racist remarks."

Well, lets see, "dude," suppose that you were a black president and I simply disagreed with your policies. But because of Canada's PC "free" speech policies you label my objections "racist" or critical of a certain group and get me in trouble with the speech police, thus "erasing" my objections.

See how that works? Such a policy happens to be a tenet or foundation of true Facism -- look it up.

Ann Coulter thrives on controversy (there's nothing wrong with stirring up the pot!) & freedom of speech means having the right to tell people what they DON'T want to hear. I see those students as the future enablers of an Islamised Canada. You want to hear how hateful Muslims are? Just go into U Tube and check out "Geert Wilders - FITNA". Cut thru the crap and Ms. Coulter is trying to warn us that our culture is under attack and it's a warning that desperately needs to be heeded. But it won't, and we'll wake up when it's too late, wondering what on earth happened to our way of life.

  • Simona - 14 years ago

dUDE, I am distraught at the hatred you are inciting against Ann Coulter. I demand that your comment be deleted and that you cease indulging in such speech.

  • dUDE - 14 years ago

wow whats up with all these comments supporting her? Canada has free speech, in fact we have something better than free speech. In Canada you cannot preach hatred or racist remarks. We don't have time for her bigot ways and racist remarks.

  • Miserable - 14 years ago

Should the Student Union president and VP of the University of Ottawa be immediately removed for their attempts to subvert and threaten free speech? Absolutely yes. The wording of the question in the poll here is obviously slanted, which is traditional CBC. Clearly it's time this alleged "public broadcaster" becomes wholly user supported rather than taxpayer funded. You don't represent me.

  • ras - 14 years ago

Our commitment to freedom of speech can only be tested those we disagree with. Ms. Coulter's critics have failed that test.

  • r - 14 years ago

Ann Coulter may not be for everybody and if you don't like what she says, and yes, she could be more 'diplomatic' at times but she is a shock 'jock' entertainer

Like TV if you don't like whats on, change the channel or turn it off. Nobody is forcing anybody to see or listen to her. I would like to think freedom of speech is important to get all points of view. Don't shoot the messenger if you don't like the message. I think I have the right to see and listen to what I choose.

Remeber Ann, your in a foreign country, be nice.

  • Matt - 14 years ago

She shouldn't have to weigh her words any differently than if she was to speak elsewhere in the world.

That being said, why was she even invited in the first place? It's obvious that the promoter's didn't do their research. That's like inviting George Bush to give a public speech in Kandahar, of course it wouldn't go over well!

  • Hoth - 14 years ago

So 28% think that Canadians are so weak and fragile that it's dangerous for them to be exposed to Ann Coulter? Sad.
