I use XBMC just because it's open source, and there is always skins to switch out. I have the program for my iPhone, so i didn't have to buy a seperate remote for the HTPC, which was a plus.
Plex + MacMini (although a pricy barrier to entry) is hands down the ideal media platform.
I love XBMC by the way
