No problem Cait. I just thought it would be nice to know you have someone out there going through a similar life situation. Well, good luck with the decision and enjoy your summer- if you decide on Mac, I will see you there! :)

I am a little biased but with midwifery you get a set of practical skills that will never ever be obsolete AND you can take it ANYWHERE. I know midwives who have gone to Afghanistan to work on issues of access to maternity care in conflict zones AND I know midwives who plug away at their PhD while working part time as a midwife. I admit, there are some dull aspects to the program (especially in the first academic portion) but I have to say, even providing care to affluent women in Burlington, there is nothing like it. On the surface of things, I am providing exceptional care to women who appear like they may not need it but everyday, we are counteracting a medical model that teaches us to not trust our bodies and their processes. Conquer anxiety and control-freakishness! So, you see, there is an endless world of possibilities with midwifery, and transforming the experiences of women and birth, transforms the world! So exciting!!!!!

oh thank you Danielle--it's so nice to hear your perspective. Thanks for taking the time to write me a quick note. I really feel like I am in the exact same boat-- I miss PEOPLE contact and relationship building. I think I am leaning towards Mac. We'd be classmates!

I think this is a tough choice. I recently had to make it as well.

I am just finishing my MA at Brock in Lifespan Developmental Psychology with an interest in how infants and young children understand others' emotions and how this helps them learn about social relationships etc etc. I really enjoy my research- its super fascinating, I love TAing and had the amazing opportunity to give a few lectures already and my supervisor and friends here are wonderful and supportive- a real community. To do a PhD, all I had to do was sign on the dotted line.

And that was the plan until last summer. Something just felt a bit off. I missed being out there in the community working with women and having a direct impact. So I did A LOT of reading and talking with family, friends and mentor, and came across midwifery. I then talked with midwives in my region and applied to McMaster and got in for the up-coming year as well.

I've decided to take the offer at McMaster - I think midwifery really encompassing everything I would love to spend my time doing and emphasizes my personal strengths and such :) Teaching university classes and doing research are still something I would love to do, but it is still a possibility down the road with a career in midwifery too.

I think when it comes down to it, you will just know what the right choice is for you. Hopefully that was helpful. Good luck with your choice!!

    Cheers
