erh... addition: when they register for some kind of account to use it on a regular basis. not for commenting or stuff like that. there I keep the hurdles low. as we use to say in germany ;o)

I support Cayo Medeiros. It is the necessary operation, especially, during present time.
For example, it was not pleasant to me that on polldaddy it is not necessary to confirm email.

  • I Think that there may be two interpretations for "e-mail verification". The first one is the verification which you have to click on a link to confirm that the e-mail that you wrote is really yours, I think that this is the one that most people understood. The other one is the double-field verification on the registration page: "e-mail" and "confirm your e-mail" to avoid mistyping errors, as I think @hpoom understood.

Email is dying ... I've thought about making it optional if you supply a Twitter handle or use Facebook Connect.

Only when they use Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, etc...

It depends, is this verification by an extra field, or by E-Mail? If by E-Mail, then I see a good point in it because you know who actually wanted to sign up as they will validate. I don't see the point in an extra E-Mail input field though

    Erm, hpoom.

Surely it means, do you require your users to validate their email as in... They sign up and have to click a link in their email to activate their account.

I find email validation pointless as a lot of users just copy and paste the first field into the second field. Asking the user for an extra email field just adds more fields to fill out and less chance of getting a user to sign up or purchase.
