I also believe the two have their advantages and disadvantages. If it's possible to enable and disable comments, I think that would be the best option!
Comments are very good especially if you want to hear what other people say and get their opinions, it gives you more insight on what others think. But of course, there are people who would use this as a window to throw their hate and malice at you (especially if anonymity is allowed), and this is very common to people who have become more or less popular in their own circles. It's also a way for spammers to... well... spam, and I'm very thankful that wordpress has a spam filter so I don't have to go through all the comments to take out spam ^^;
Another bad side to opening your blog to comments is that there are people who would, and I'm pretty sure there will be... post a comment but would most likely have the same sentiments as above commenters. Now, this all depends if you like reading comments from people or not. I like reading comments so I don't mind having people repeat stuff.. there are people, however who either don't have time, or just don't like to sift through the comments they get. Sooo... there. ^^;
Maybe if you would be opening your blog to certain discussions, then you can enable comments? Most of the stuff you do post are your own updates so it's not really a must for you to have them open. Afterall, there's deviantart, facebook and twitter for that too :)
