Was the L.A. City Council right to pass a boycott of Arizona?

In general, why do most people fail when they setup a resolution to quit something.
However, it is well documented that most sex offenders or people involved in sex
crimes do have a strong addiction to porn.
"Now continue to hold that feeling with compassion until it starts to subside.

It seems that the LA city council does not understand the word illegal: these people are here ilegally, breaking our laws. Most of the LA City Council is under the contol of hispanic orginizations, and are using tax payer money to support the views of those orginizations.

I hope that the State of Arizona has a way to inforce their law, and to tell LA to butt out.

A message to all Illegal Aliens: Please obey our laws and apply for entry to the United States legally. We will then welcome you with open arms. Demanding special rights to violate our laws will not sit well with the American people as the same would be true in your home country. We have some politicians that rely on massive Voter Fraud to remain in power. That is the real reason for these phoney Boycotts of Arizona. They are willing to violate our laws for personal political gain but in the long run they will undermine the security of our Nation. Don't depend on these politicians for support they will be voted out of office in November.

The LA City Council should be fire and then deported. All states should adopt the Arizona law.

ok people...........please look at this city council......and PLEASE VOTE them out! ask yourself if you REALLY want these people speaking for you...I sure don't...I see a mass exodus out of California coming...

All you supporters of this law here your chance to leave Los ANgeles. MOve to Arizona, there housing needs more help than ours.

As in gay marriage, a majority does not make it right. Reading these comments I can tell there are alot of "uneducated, biased people" out there. And a slew of "white trash"

And as usual when the economy sucks everyone comes out to blame the "illegal immigrants". WHERE WERE YOU GUYS WHEN THE ECONOMY WAS ROARING? SO TYPICAL!

I am a native Arizonan, I've seen the dramatic decline our state has gone through. I definitely support this law and I'm glad to see this kind of support for us. I think it's absolutely ridiculous that CLEARY the majority of Americans support this bill and yet politicians and supporters of ILLEGAL immigration are touting how wrong this bill is, comparing it to the Nazi's and never fully understanding the bill. Cities in California are the most ridiculous of all, who are dealing with the same problems and have actually there very own law similiar to this one. I am glad this law will soon go into effect but I'm also concerned for our law enforcement as they will be getting the majority of the backlash for enforing the law.

    TALK ABOUT SCOFFLAWS

    California Penal Code Section 30-33

    31. All persons concerned in the commission of a crime, whether it
be felony or misdemeanor, and whether they directly commit the act
constituting the offense, or aid and abet in its commission, or, not
being present, have advised and encouraged its commission, and all
persons counseling, advising, or encouraging children under the age
of fourteen years, or persons who are mentally incapacitated, to
commit any crime, or who, by fraud, contrivance, or force, occasion
the drunkenness of another for the purpose of causing him to commit
any crime, or who, by threats, menaces, command, or coercion, compel
another to commit any crime, are principals in any crime so
    committed.

    32. Every person who, after a felony has been committed, harbors,
conceals or aids a principal in such felony, with the intent that
said principal may avoid or escape from arrest, trial, conviction or
punishment, having knowledge that said principal has committed such
felony or has been charged with such felony or convicted thereof, is
    an accessory to such felony.

    33. Except in cases where a different punishment is prescribed, an
accessory is punishable by a fine not exceeding five thousand dollars
($5,000), or by imprisonment in the state prison, or in a county
jail not exceeding one year, or by both such fine and imprisonment.

Just because they are HERE illegally, they are by definition criminals that are violating the law. Not to mention that they are thieves that are stealing a piece of all that the legal citizens have shed blood, sweat, tears, and taxes to make the USA what it is today and bequeath to their children.

Clearly just about every member of the LA council is guilty of violating the above law with the many actions they take to protect the illegals. Why doesn't the oath breaking City Attorney charge them?

Janice Hahn is a fool!! Has she solved the port in San Pedro's problems? Has she solved the problems in Harbor
Gateway, whereas Mexicans (probably ilegals) are killing/and harrassing blacks for at least 20 years. How in the H can they find the time to mind the business of another state! Dumb, dumb, dumb!!

i find it amusing that the presidents expressed his dismay when the party crashing salihi's crashed the white house state dinner last winter...but when illedgal imigrants come crashing in to our neighborhoods, no problem, its fine.

  • Eddiewouldgo - 14 years ago

The LA city council is so messed up that they can't even see straight. I wish they would spend the same amount of time, energy trying to fix the budget mess instead of worrying about a law that is legal. You have enough problems on your own and LA is a big joke to many of the people across the nation. You guys are running on a emotional band wagon but apparently you are the minority. From outside looking in many of us can see the reasons why LA is so
    .....up.

I've live in 5 western states in my adulthood and can not believe how ridiculous the political grand standing has become. I've even worked as a leo along the border and find the new law in AZ a step in the right direction. I have personally canceled summer plans to my home state of CA due to the lame ass stances in regards to the state in which I currently reside. If Au'nold can do it legally, why can't everyone else?

The beloved Mayor of the biggest "sanctuary" city in the nation is meeting with the president of Mexico today.
Wonder what strategy they will cook up to return California to Mexico. Let's face it, Villaregosa is Mexico's croney through and through. Did you see his statement about illegal immigrants contributing to California's financial might?
What financial might?? Did he not get the memo that we were paying people with IOUs last year??? I'd say next to our idiot, tax the hell out of the cash cow constituents until they bleed from their eyes politicians in California, illegal immigrants are the second most draining drag on California's economy.

I thought these guys were sworn to uphold the laws, not uphold the laws they agree with wholeheartedly. California is so ack basswards, it's stunning.

  • D Zuege - 14 years ago

I think in a time of true economic crisis boycotting any city would be a financial nightmare for the boycotting city. California is a vacation destination for many people from other US States and other countries worldwide. I for one will pull the plug on a cruise departing from LA and Disneyland vacation sechuduled in November and re-book a similiar vacation in Florida. LA mind your own business and take care of your own affairs, which have not always had the best records.

  • KDH - 14 years ago

I can't even believe this L.A. City Council AND our photo-opp hungry, racist Mayor. My feeling is that the City Council is doing this boycott partly to kiss the Mayor's butt, and HE'S the racist if anyone is. He would like to give the whole state to Mexico and make the American people pay their way. Thank you Grieg Smith for holding out and voting against this ridiculous boycott. (Too bad only ONE of you has a brain in their head!) CHEERS to AZ for passing a much needed law to actually enforce the Federal law that our own government WON'T enforce! I'M glad SOMEONE has the guts to do it. I hope this creates a snowball effect around the country and that every state in the union (key word UNION) follows suit. Try boycotting EVERYBODY! This is going to come back and bite you in the ass. It's already beginning from what I read of the previous comments. If AZ decides to cut off water and power to us, you'll hear some big time whining then! I am so tired of listening to the news every day and hearing one story after another about how broke we are, and how the City is looking for more and more ways to get more money out of us to fix the MAJOR mess THEY got us into. If we weren't paying the way for so many illegals, whether they be from south of the border or anywhere else, we would be in much better shape than we are. The City Council should keep their nose out of everyone else's business and take care of OUR City before they start criticising another STATE for protecting it's own LEGAL citizens. This country is going down the toilet, and it's because of "leadership" (I use the term loosely here) like what we have in Los Angeles. I hope every one of you are voted out next election, especially the Mayor. And, to say that this AZ law is anything remotely close to Nazi Germany is THEEE MOST STUPID, insulting, ridiculous thing anyone could say. It's a disgrace to those who lost their lives as a result of the Nazis. You should be ASHAMED of yourselves for saying such a thing! I hope AZ sticks to this law and doesn't cave under pressure from a bunch of IDIOTS like our city council and others like them in this country. To say that it's racist for law enforcement to ask someone for LEGAL ID to prove that they are legal is idiotic. Is it racist for a cop to pull me over (I'm of the Caucasian persuasion) to ask me if I'm legal? Some how I think that it wouldn't be considered racist by those who protest the law. But if a person who APPEARS to be Hispanic is asked the same question, NOW it's racist. How stupid is that? I could be from Canada, OR Mexico (since Mexico has a lot of causian people who were actually born there). IF I am legal, I can prove it, and there will not be a problem for me. They let me go on my way. If I'm not legal, then I have a problem, NO MATTER MY SKIN COLOR. That being said, it seems to me that the people screaming the loudest about this are the ones who think that we should just have totally open borders, even though it is AGAINST THE LAW. What about AGAINST THE LAW don't you morons understand? I am so glad that this poll is here and available for people to express how they feel about this. It's good to know that there a some people who still have some common sense and intelligence out there. Too bad we have so little of it in our city leadership.

This is just how socialism is spread, by force. I say let LA boycott AZ and then watch AZ turn out the lights in LA. I bet that will get the LA City Clowncil's attention! With any luck we can get WA. to join in and shut off the rest of the power and turn off all the water they get from Coulee Dam as well. Stupid socialist LA City Clowncil! Commifornia is bankrupt because of it's elected officials ineptness. Now they want EVERYONE to share in their misery! Let 'em rot I say! I say if LA boycotts AZ let AZ ship all of it's illegals to LA. My guess is that's where most of them came from any way. Remember, CA. is bankrupt, all them little brown ppl gotta go somewhere right? Well, let CA. have them back! Hello Civil War II!

You used the system and never contributed anywhere near what you took out, so now the cookie jar is enpty. You would do ANYTHING to make it continue, including vilifying anyone who disagrees with you. Go back to your smelly, filthy 3rd world countries, wherever they are, and develop enough SPINE to fixing your own country, instead of doing nothing here.

I took the time to READ both the Arizona Law (with amendments) and the Federal law. They absolutely mirror each other. The Counsel, as usual, when given the choice to do the right thing or the wrong thing....made the wrong choice. Funny how they have a 50-50 chance to get it right and all members but one got it wrong! those are some amazing odds!!!!!!!!

Doesn't anyone realize that Arizona law enforcement has always asked for identification papers? If the
subject isn't legal in this country, they (the state of Arizona) will put said subject on a bus owned by the
state of Arizona, and transport said subject back to the border. They have done this for years without
problem or question. Doesn't anyone listen to Sheriff Joe???

I am a Hispanic female here LEGALLY I waited my turn to become a contributing member of American society. I am AGAINST all illegal immigration for ALL COUNTRIES. Societies have rules, such as don't murder, rape, steal, etc. Illegal immigration is VERY MUCH LIKE THEFT. I CANNOT CONDONE THE ILLEGAL AND RACIST ACTS OF MY OWN PEOPLE EVEN THOUGH I AM HISPANIC! If I condoned illegal immigration that would make me a racist Hispanic supremacist, much like the racist hate group La Raza. I know the racist type that joins groups like La Raza, the sort that join La Raza are worse than white racist skinheads and even the Nazi-like Israeli Jews that ruthlessly enforce Apartheid between themselves and Palestinians. At least Jews and Skinheads don't traffic drugs like many illegals do. I am ashamed to admit 'my people' are this way.

Arizona's "papers please" UNCONSTITUTIONAL law does NOT "mirror" federal law.

Federal law does not presume that all persons stopped are illegal unless they happen to be carrying certain documents on them. Federal law does NOT deal with day laborer/traffic restrictions, or state -- as SB 1070 does -- that "attrition through enforcement" (i.e., driving the brown people out of the U.S.) is public policy.

    Federal law does not CRIMINALIZE an undocumented immigrants presence on U.S. soil as it is a CIVIL (not criminal) violation of federal law as explained by DHS secretary Janet Napolitano;

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTqim4Se70k

    Former US Attorney, Rudy Giuliani;

"So believe me, I know this. In fact, when you throw an immigrant out of the country, it's not a criminal proceeding. It's a civil proceeding."

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDo-ZVK4dc0

"While an illegal alien is subject to deportation, that person's ongoing presence in the United States in and of itself is not a crime"

    http://www.kscourts.org/Cases-and-Opinions/opinions/ctapp/2007/20070817/96613.htm

Former US Attorney for New Jersey (now GOP Governor of New Jersey) Christopher Christie

"Being in this country without proper documentation is not a crime," Christie told more than 60 residents and town officials. "The whole phrase of 'illegal immigrant' connotes that the person, by just being here, is committing a crime."
Being undocumented may be a civil wrong, but it's not a criminal act, Christie said.

    http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2008/04/immigrants_and_their_advocates.html

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9jk7xbRuSk

Given that local cops to are REQUIRED under 1070 to inquire on the status of those they SUSPECT of being undocumented during any stop, detention or arrest -- no crime actually needs to be committed - crossing the border is a CIVIL (not criminal) violation of federal law.

    SB 1070 plainly states:

    http://www.azleg.gov/alispdfs/council/SB1070-HB2162.PDF

"A PERSON IS PRESUMED TO NOT BE AN ALIEN WHO IS UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES IF THE PERSON PROVIDES TO THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER OR AGENCY ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:

    1. A VALID ARIZONA DRIVER LICENSE.

    2. A VALID ARIZONA NONOPERATING IDENTIFICATION LICENSE.

    3. A VALID TRIBAL ENROLLMENT CARD OR OTHER FORM OF TRIBAL IDENTIFICATION.

    4. IF THE ENTITY REQUIRES PROOF OF LEGAL PRESENCE IN THE UNITED STATES BEFORE ISSUANCE, ANY VALID UNITED STATES FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL GOVERNMENT ISSUED IDENTIFICATION."

Even U.S. citizens could be held until someone from Immigration and Customs Enforcement is called to sort them out.

Moreover, the very top of SB 1070 states that the "intent" of the law is to make "attrition through enforcement" state policy - where is this phrase mirrored in federal law?

Even if you are a U.S. citizen, you will be presumed to be an alien "unlawfully present" unless you have one of the above stated IDs!

Immigration is the purview of the federal government according to the U.S. Constitution. States are not allowed to go around drafting their own immigration statutes. Hence, the law is unconstitutional.

Arizonas' "papers please" law is either UNCONSTITUTIONAL or the U.S. Constitution is just a "GD piece of paper"!

Not only should the city council mind its own business, but more so clean up its own dirty, corrupt and dysfunctional act before meddling into other people's affairs.

But, California has an almost identical law on their books, Will California boycott California?

    LOL.

Check out section 834b of the California Penal Code

    (a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws. (b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the following: (1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status. (2) Notify the person of his or her apparent status as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws and inform him or her that, apart from any criminal justice proceedings, he or she must either obtain legal status or leave the United States. (3) Notify the Attorney General of California and the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service of the apparent illegal status and provide any additional information that may be requested by any other public entity. (c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city, county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is expressly prohibited.

Dear Ms. Hahn, you and the rest of the idiots in L. A. and your rediculous state need to focus on the fact that you have distroyed you city and the entire California economy. I moved from California because I could see the writing on the wall. You are nothing more than traitors. You are sucking up to illegals to further you chances of being re-elected. You think that you have the right to your own opinion and to hell with what the majority of the people think. I am now a resident of Kingman, Az. and I see that you and your associates are now trying to mess with our state so as to take focus off the fact that you have ruined yours. In Ariazona, the government is looking after it's citizens. You would not know how to do that. Arizona will stand firm and we will enforce our new SB 1070. I bet you live in one of those gated communities, and I see you and that piece of trash Nancy Pelosi have a lot in common. I would like to arrange for bus fare to send all that "WET BACKS" to live with you as your perminent house guess! What do you think Girl? That should make you happy! Leave my state alone. On closing if you would please pass the word to the other council members that Arizona doesn't want jokes like you crossing our boarder either. Sincerly may you burn in Hell! Carl Kerns, Kingman, Az. I live in LA and am disgraced by what the LA City counsel has done. For them to compare what is going on in Arizona to Nazi Germany is pathetic when all Arizona is trying to do is keep its citizens safe. Not surprising, the majority of Americans support Arizona and their efforts to secure its state. Its amazing how politicians turn a blind eye to their constituents and lean toward helping the illegals. I dont understand it but that will all change in November!!

Beings those against Arizona law are either Illegals ,Anchor Babies, and those that get cheap labor fro them I am disgusted that we have a Mexican Major leading his group instead of the Legal U.S. Citizens.

Villar caters to the Mexican/Illegals. He needs to go South of the border lead that cesspool.

We have laws here that need to be enforced. This isn't Mexico that is out of control with drug runners..Beheadings,mostly corrupt cops, and so on.

How can any group be so proud to wave a flag of a shithole type of country as Mexico is. Just because you are high in numbers because of your lack of intelligence with not using BIRTH CONTROL makes you stupid.

Breed like animals and make yourseld poorer..Yeah that's a smart move you guys. And don't tell me Mexican's are "family" oriented... What a joke...

How come you guys have such a high number of gang members in your community? Huh? Mommy and daddy don't seem to be raising their little ANCHOR BABY too well ...Otherwise they WOULDN'T JOIN A GANG!!! You guys are a joke. Hey see anymore Mary's on a tortilla???

How stupid is that? And say hi to your wonderful Catholic "church" with your wonderful "kid loving" preists.. "Hispanics " are a joke.. But then you live in a bubble of "I refuse to speak ENGLISH" and stay in your stupidity.. sad group... can't ever evolve..

Yeah I think it's much easier to BOYCOTT LOS ANGELES and extention of MEXICO...yeah I can do that..Much more peaceful and lovely ,less trash there.. A beautiful view ...ARIZONA... AWESOME place.

One last thing get out of my country.LAWBREAKERS..You need to be scared.. you are crimminals... CRIMMINALS NEED TO BE SCARED....again you guys look stupid and are a joke. Don't forget to keep waving that dirty flag.. It will help others see how much you guys are losers..

The Secure Communities Fingerprint Program (via ICE) is already established in LA county and getting San Francisco on board along with the other 160 communities in 20 states that want some protection from criminal activity by illegals.

LA Sheriff's deputies already have the right and the ICE training to screen for citizenship status when stopping someone. The only thing keeping LAPD from doing so is Special Order 40, which willed be repealed once the current council is booted out. The LAPD Union supports the AZ immigration law, as well they should.

Sanctuary is dead, even for minors.

I LOVE MEXICANS::: This is all your American forefathers' fault for thinking they can "buy" Mexico's land in 1848 for a good profit (1848 Goldrush, Western Trade Ports, Central Valley Megafarms) without also absorbing Mexico's people and culture. Fuck your protestant American forefathers. This is their fault. They should have stayed in Alabama. Now we're left to deal with the hatred against brown folks. P.S. WELCOME TO AZTLAN.

Isn't it an outrage? The LA City Council is butting into the business of a state whose people are just trying to protect themselves (as if our illustrious council memers have nothing better to do). Don't let Arizona's due legal process get steamrollered by radicals who want us to turn a blind eye to violations of law. How dare they! Didn't they take an oath of office?

SUPPORT Arizona during the boycott! Plan a trip to the Grand Canyon State this summer. The guidebook below offers many suggestions for interesting and fun things to do. Reverse the boycott!

Also, PATRONIZE THESE BUSINESSES WITH ARIZONA HEADQUARTERS: Apollo Group (University of Phoenix), Cold Stone Creamery, Discount Tire Company, Go Daddy, Mesa Air Group (Mesa Airlines, Go!, Freedom Airlines), P. F. Chang’s China Bistro, PetSmart, U-Haul, US Airways.

Help reverse the unfair boycott by those attempting to trample the will of the people of Arizona.

Why risk having a contract ripped out from under me because of politics?

All illegal aliens need to move to the sanctuaries of LA and Austin Texas. Americans do not want to be around a bunch of foreign illegals. Take your kidnappings, murders, language, protests, flags, and general thug-like behavior and get the hell out and go back to your country that you are so proud of. NOTING BUT A BUNCH OF SELF SERVING PIECES OF EXCREMENT. TAKE EM ALL DOWN. NO DOUBT THEY WILL END UP ON THE UN-EMPLOYED LIST. WHO WOULD IN THEIR RIGHT MIND HIRE ANY OF THIS GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jack - 14 years ago

Isn't it ironic- the L.A. Times, which backs the boycott and supports the action of the L.A. City Council, continues to do business with Arizona. If one looks at where remittance checks are mailed for subscriptions, the address is a p.o. box in Phoenix Arizona!!

  • Mark Booth - 14 years ago

Oh darn, I forget to mention something to the LA Times...hehe. Hey yo, LA Time libtards, you need to stick to reporting and keep your political opinions to yourself and out of the paper. From this poll, look what you made your newspaper look like, a BIG JOKE.

  • Mark Booth - 14 years ago

I sure would like to know who that 1% of the vote is....LOL. I bet that person or people wont say who they are now that we see the 92% saying "no". But I sure could take a guess who it could be..haha.

  • BarbaraB - 14 years ago

The Times is wasting a great deal of effort keeping this poll a secret for now..It's extremely HOT news on the internet. I do believe a few million people are already laughing at the L.A. Times. To the owner, publisher and editor I can only say, NOW you know why your going belly-up...NO honesty and nothing but Nazi/Liberal-Democratic opinions by your staff..Most disgusting..Oh yes, one more thing..GO ARIZONA!

  • Ann Mere - 14 years ago

I am a teacher in LA, and I fully support Arizona's action to protect their citizens, maintain law & order, and to go after illegals committing any crimes (including crossing the border illegally, participating in human slavery, illegal drugs transport & selling, transporting humans illegally along with illegal gun smuggling, and kidnapping, rape, tortue, and murder.

If Los Angeles police really did their jobs and followed federal immigration laws, our crime rate in Los Angeles would go way down. Also Los Angeles would cease to be the attractive magnet that it is now, drawing criminals of all kinds. Maybe then these illegals would stay in their own countries, change their own governments, and improve their own countries. Please take your Mexican flags back to Mexico. Many of us would be happy if we NEVER
    saw a Mexican flag again.

  • GeraldR5 - 14 years ago

The City of Los Angeles City Council, just like the Los Angeles Times (once a great newspaper, now a pedestrian rag) seem to forget one basic thing: if a boycott works (which it won't) the persons who will be most hurt are the average working guy, the kind who goes to work every morning and works his tail off to support his family. The people who passed the law (just like the morons in L.A.) will continue to collect their abundant salary, sit on their overly padded rears and collect their benefits with no loss to them. No WONDER they're willing to undertake such actions. If they REALLY want to hit Arizona where it hurts....go on a hunger strike. Now THAT I would love to see and would convince me of their sincerity.

  • Jessica - 14 years ago

I live in Arizona and have all 23yrs of my life. And I think that LA is wrong and stupid to boycott AZ. I live in one of the many low income communities in Glendale. Around here people call it "ghetto-ville" Anyways, I have grown up around mostly african-american and mexican-american people, in my complex and in my schools. I have many african american and mexican american friends. And it's not the mexican-american's that the Law even talks about....if you have actually read it, you will see that police can't just pull over a vehicle or stop someone on the streets and start asking them to prove their immigration status just because they look of Mexican decent.....THEY HAVE TO HAVE PROBABLE CAUSE/REASONABLE DOUBT!!! They can't harass people. There are A HUGE NUMBER OF GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES THEY HAVE TO FOLLOW. AND LA.....YOU CAN BOYCOTT US, BUT MOST OF THE STAT OF ARIZONA ARE ALL FOR BOYCOTTING YOU RIGHT BACK......WE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG!! THAT'S WHY THE LAW WAS APPROVED! BECAUSE IT IS WITHIN THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS! AND WE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO YOU! BUT THAT'S OK CITY COUNCIL OF LOS ANGELES...GO AHEAD AND GET YOUR 15 MINS.....CAUSE WHEN THE ILLEGALS START LEAVING OR FLEEING ARIZONA...THEY'RE GOING TO COME STRAIGHT TO YOU AND THEN YOU'LL SUFFER AS MUCH AS OUR ECONOMY AND CITIZENS HAVE. YOU'LL GET TO DEAL WITH THE MURDERS THE RAPINGS, THE DOMESTIC ABUSE, THE LOSS OF YOUR JOBS, THE KIDNAPPING OF YOUR CITIZENS....I'M AWARE THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE ALL OF THIS GOING ON, CAUSE, WELL, IT'S EVERYWHERE.....I'M TALKING ABOUT WHEN IT DOUBLES, YOU'LL BE REGRETTING YOUR DECISION.....THNIK ABOUT THIS.....I HAD A FRIEND THAT WAS 24 YEARS OLD....HE HAD ALWAYS SEEN ROUGH TIMES....BUT HE WENT ON DAY TO DAY. HAD A BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER THAT WAS 5YRS OLD.....A FRIEND OF HIS HAD SET HIM UP SAYING THAT HE HAD STOLEN SOME MONEY FROM HIM WHEN MY FRIEND HADN'T....THE MONEY THAT WAS "ALLEGEDLY" STOLEN WAS MONEY THAT GUY OWED TO A DRUG DEALER, AN ILLEGAL ALIEN......MY FRIEND WAS IN HIS APARTMENT WITH ANOTHER FRIEND AND HIS 5 YR OLD DAUGHTER THAT HAD JUST BEEN DROPPED OFF FOR VISITATION FOR THE WEEKEND......tHE "SO-CALLED" FRIEND KNOCKED ON THE DOOR AND MY FRIEND LET HIM IN, WHILE HE WAS WALKING IN 3 ILLEGAL ALIENS THAT WORKED FOR THAT DRUG DEALER RUSH THE APARTMENT WITH GUNS AND GRABBED MY FRIEND AND TOOK HIM TO HIS BEDROOM. HIS LITTLE GIRL WAS HELD AT GUN POINT ALONG WITH THE FRIEND THAT WAS ALREADY THERE, IN THE LIVING ROOM. tHEY BEAT MY FRIEND SENSELESS FOR OVER AN HOUR. WHEN HE DIDN'T GIVE THEM WHAT THE WANTED, BECAUSE HE HAD NO IDEA WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT, THEY DRUG HIM OUT TO THE LIVING ROOM AND MADE HIM KNEEL IN FRONT OF HIS DAUGHTER.....HE TOLD HER HE LOVED HER AS THEY SHOT HIM IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD.......THAT WAS APRIL 9 2004. THE ILLEGALS WERE NEVER CAUGHT......THAT IS WHAT MOST OF THEM ARE DOING. NOW I WILL BE HONEST AND SAY YEAH THERE IS A SLIM FRACTION OF ILLEGALS THAT ARE JUST HERE TO WORK....BUT THEY ARE STILL BREAKING THE LAW BY BEING HERE ILLEGALLY.....THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY YOU ILLITERATE COUNCIL MEMBERS.

  • ted kensington - 14 years ago

OK All you people who think the Council made a terrible mistake. The LAT thinks they did a wonderful thing. So, cancel your LAT subscribtions and that will be noticed in the right places. Hurt the LAT and you help Arizona.

  • Priscella Krager - 14 years ago

The boycott is a travesty! It is an insult to those of us who have families that were LEGAL immigrants!
In our family, one child was ill, the whole family went back to Greece, until the child was well and welcome on Ellis Island.
The family returned and spent the alloted time on Ellis Island, then joined those who guaranteed them jobs, so they would not be a burden on the USA. We are of Armenian heritage. We have dark hair, and have often been mistaken for another nationality. Who cares! If we are living honestly, and have nothing to hide, then we have nothing to lose.
Los Angeles needs to get it's own house in order. All of this is just a tactic to get everyone to focus on something other than the REAL problems that need to be remedied.

I remember as a child, my father would hire Mexican workers. When he found out they were not here legally, we would drive to Mexico, with the worker, dad would hire an attorney in Mexico to get the proper paperwork started,
he would guarantee them work, and soon they were back on the payroll, and eventually became citizens!

Let's encourage LEGAL immigration. Let's begin to reward GOOD behavior, and discourage BAD. Somehow we have become upside down in this matter, we just accept the BAD behavior and make excuses, and accept it!

We need to model that freedom is work, and worth the effort. We need to hang on to the accomplishments that have made us the country we are today. God Bless the USA! Let's keep her (USA) free and proud.

  • Evodawg - 14 years ago

Being from CA but not much longer, I remember the days when you would see a White Van with a green stripe around it, The INS. What ever happened to those Vans? I haven't seen one in 15 years!!!

  • Evodawg - 14 years ago

And you wonder why 7500 families are leaving CA every month? Soon the LA City Council will get what they want, LA full of Illegal Aliens and no tax paying income. The Political Leaders in CA and LA are a bad joke dropped on us from HELL!!! HEAVEN help us.. btw I'm moving to Utah... If we're really lucky CA will fall into the Pacific and we can start all over again.

  • Jamey - 14 years ago

Anybody notice the comments from that moron Ian Lee? He must be an iligal alian who came through Arizona's border and went to school in LA. How else do you understand his arse kissing of the LA City Council and his spelling and grammar?

  • John Allison III - 14 years ago

Why is there not an option that says, "No. Arizona has a right to protect it's citizens?"

  • Eeyore - 14 years ago

The 13 city council members who voted for this lunatic boycott must be driven from office by a recall or some other means. The one council member, who had the courage to stand alone and vote against the boycott, needs to run for Governor of California, or at least Mayor of Los Angeles.
    BOYcott L.A!
    BUYcott Arizona!

  • CASucks - 14 years ago

I so badly want to leave this state run by idiots and frauds in both parties. It sickens me that our politicians and our largest southern newspaper are so out of touch with the people they serve. I own a business here and am so sick of these morons raising taxes and fees every chance they get. This is the greatest example of left-leaning, state politics in our country and it is a massive failure on every level. The whole country is laughing at us. The red states are stealing our businesses and our middle class. Entire areas are becoming slums. But our politicians can't see it from their houses and they have their drivers take a different rout so they don't have to see it.

Raise the sales tax during a recession? Are you kidding me? Have you heard of the freaking internet? Anyone in California can hop online and buy almost anything from a retailer outside of California and avoid paying the nearly 10% sales tax. California businesses are at 10% disadvantage to customers in our own neighborhoods. and NONE of that sales tax goes into our state coffers. And sales tax revenues have fallen since raising them. I wonder why?

Nero fiddled while Rome burned. These morons are too stupid to play the fiddle.

We need to bulldoze California and start over! Excuse me while I go to realtor.com and look for houses in AZ and TX. Two states with a clue. Good riddance the elites will say, but who will pay for their programs and union entitlements when there is no middle class left in this sad shadow of a formerly great state?

    Rant much?

  • Billfromsangabriel - 14 years ago

Just want to inform comment people, Arizona Ice Tea is made in New York. Having said that, I don't believe the city of Los Angeles read the Arizona immigration law. If they had, they would have realized it is similar to the Federal Law.
I 'm embarressed for the city of Los Angeles. Maybe if, the city was running a surplus budget, and wasn't having to lay off people and be on the verge of bankruptcy. Than that would be different. The city is broke though. They have no clue what Arizona is going through. They should take care of their own city and not stupidly protest what the state of Arizona is going through.
If you are a Laker fan and traveling to Phoenix to watch them play there for game 3 or game 4 of the playoffs, the city recommends you bring your own snacks and limit your purchases in the great state of Arizona.
Good night Gracey! Good night Bill! Good night America!

  • diane - 14 years ago

Seems the LA city Council and Eric Holder have something in common....a rush to judgement. Message to the LA city council AND Eric Holder....READ THE BILL!!

We just canceled our plans for vacationing in CA...going to AZ instead!

  • Keggrrr - 14 years ago

Ok, so we know that the 13 council members are flaming imbeciles, but there are 950 +/- that voted that the AZ 1070 is a bad law?????????? How uneducated can you be.

    Support Arizona

    VIVA LA DEPORTATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Stu707 - 14 years ago

The LA City Council should devote its time and energy to solving the city's financial crisis. Let Arizonans worry about Arizona's laws.

  • AzAnnie - 14 years ago

A thank you as big as the blue Arizona sky to all of you who support us, both with your words and by coming to our state to help counteract the abusive boycotts of reactionary people who have never read the law.

  • Rob - 14 years ago

The Arizona Law is correct and soon will be the law of the land. Illegal Immigrants are a criminal breed that need to be prosecuted and punished to the full extent of the law. We applaud Arizona and her Governor. We love Legal Immigrants and will do everything to help them - but the criminal illegals need to go home. They are criminal trespassers and leaches on our society. This is not racist, as we welcome all legal visitors from all cultures, races, religions, backgrounds. We are only opposed to the criminal trespassers who knowingly violate our laws for their own personal gain! They are evil people who we do not want to live in our fine country. Go home! Immigration reform should ban those who entered our country illegally from ever returning - but should welcome those who do the legal process and keep their status legal! We love legal immigrants - we detest illegals. Simple.

  • Sparkle - 14 years ago

It’s hard to imagine that anyone would object to a governor protecting her own state — and doing so by following the federal immigration law, which specifically gives the states the right to legislate what the fed has failed to do.

I’ve never yet heard a good reason why illegals should be immune to the law. Citizens aren’t.

I’ve yet to hear a good reason why illegals should be allowed to enter this country at THEIR will rather than by abiding by OUR rules of entry.

And what could be more ironic than demonstrations by law-breakers insisting on their “rights”? They have the right to return home unharmed, but that’s about it.

  • Truth - 14 years ago

There is a racist aspect to all of this but it may not be what you think. There is a Mexican group operating in this country called La Raza. "La Raza" literally means "the race". They believe they are a special race of people who can live on our soil but not obey our laws. They are similar to skinheads or the KKK. Their ultimate aim is to take back the Southwest part of the United States for Mexico.

  • Merritt R. Hartley II - 14 years ago

When illegal immigrants demand the violation of our rights, they negate and forfeit their own. Aren't the same individuals and groups so loudly proclaiming us racists for defending our rights, themselves engaged in racism?

  • Rocco - 14 years ago

One more thing, if you live in Arizona and are reading this, don't believe all the crap you see in the media about what people thing of SB1070. Just take a look at poll results....this one, for example.

  • Rocco - 14 years ago

As a Californian, I want to say:

God bless the good people of the State of Arizona and their courageous leader, Governor Jan Brewer!

  • Larry Eisenburg - 14 years ago

I have read the Arizona law and it specifically outlaws racial profiling, but isn't racial profiling the same thing as affirmative action?

  • Rocco - 14 years ago

I'm sorry. The engine attached to the word "racist" is out of gas. You'll have to choose a new word to avoid being boring.

  • Paul W. - 14 years ago

The City Council are a bunch of idiots....They should support the law and not condemn it. The City of Los Angeles and the State of California are both in the toilet. Illegal immigration has much to do with this. I was just at a swearing in ceremony where 7,000 LEGAL aliens became Americans. Most were Latino. The individuals I spoke with, all supported the Arizona law. These proud Americans did it the right way. We should not support people who do it the wrong way. The City council needs to pull their heads out of their respective asses and face reallity.

  • Barbara Washington - 14 years ago

We need a law like Arizona's here. Let's do it!

  • Marty L. - 14 years ago

Another states law ( when it is a carbon copy of the federal immigration law) needs to be left alone. Eric Holder, the AFL-CIO have not READ it, yet condemn it. How dare they.

Nowhere is it written our city officials can insert their personal opinions and mandate it as law.

Final comment: Arizona, by utilizing federal law, is trying to prevent what has happened to our state--Los Angeles is spending 1 Billion dollars a year on illegal alien support only, we are broke. That is why.

Kudos to Arizona, Wish our governor had some guts.

  • LARoy - 14 years ago

82% (give or take a few) of Los Angeles registered voters do not vote. If people would spend less time complaining about the moronic actionns of the Mayor and Council and instead spend a whopping 5 minutes filling out their Vote By Mail ballots, then we wouldn't have had a 2nd term of the Worst Mayor that the City of Los Angeles has ever had (and we thought he was a terrible council person). There are a few Council persons who actually care about Los Angeles more than their own personal political careers, but the rest need to go right behind the Mayor and his appointed staff and stop the wasting of taxpayer dollars on ridiculous boycotts that never work.

How many dollars will it cost the City of Los Angeles to redo contracts and enforce the boycott? And at the same time they scream poverty. Stupid is, stupid does.

BEYOND MY HUSBAND'S JOB, I AM HALF BLACK AND THE IDEA THAT THIS BILL IS RACIST IS THE SILLIEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD. READ THE BILL FIRST!

  • AZDUDE - 14 years ago

LOL from Arizona! This poll and these comments make me think CA isn't completely off it's rocker. I just heard LA's mayor changed his name to a Spanish name to get Hispanic votes and that he failed the bar 4 times. WTF? What a D-BAG.

  • ronnies6 - 14 years ago

My hope and prayer is that none of these people on the council will ever again be in public life after they are voted out of office. If I robbed a store it is ILLEGAL, if I killed my child it is ILLEGAL and if I jaywalked it is ILLEGAL. I didn't know there are LEVELS of ILLEGAL. Our city council does not speak for the people, only for their own self-interests. God help all of us.

  • Larry P. - 14 years ago

If the LA city Council thinks its that wrong. Why dont they boycott everone that agrees with arizona and tell them not to come to LA. No more conventions in LA or tourst. tell everyone in the country not to come if they agree with arizona. Have them come to the O.C. we have know problem with arizona. At least everyone I've talk too.and just rented a house boat in lake mohave for a week. My family, friends and I go to AZ. more then LA. Nothing in LA we would like anyway. unless you like paying Higher sales TAX.Plus I don't know when the last time I heard a politican say "AMERICAN CITIZENS" with ou saying something in between. My Jewish grandmother came to the USA from Poland as a legal immigrant. However, her entire family remained behind in Poland. They were systematically executed by the Nazi invaders/occupiers. To have a LA city council member equate this Arizona law with the oppression under the Nazi regime is completely ludicrous, insensitive, and irresponsible. It is time to be held responsible for ones opinions, the LA City council should apologize to all of us who lost relatives and loved ones at the hand of the Nazis. To allow this to go unpunished is a farce.

  • Ed - 14 years ago

The Arizona law reflects all the rules of the U.S. Constitution. Too bad the City of LA could not stand similar scrutiny since it welcomes and harbors illegal immigrants against the Constitution of the United States that all the lawmakers have sworn to uphold.

  • Judy - 14 years ago

Holder didn't read the bill what makes you think Hahn and her ilk did? It's all about getting votes! They vote for the illegal now, they get amnesty and hopefully remember in the future and vote for these idiots. But then I could be wrong. I have heard they vote anyway-legal or illegal. Put your sights on November. Your vote counts more than ever. Write your letters and keep your comments going to the people who no longer care about you!

The Los Angeles City Council which has done such a terrible job with La's finances. Starting an economic war against another state just shows their lack of brainpower. Why not boycott the repressive government in China. This is nothing more than pandering for votes. It is time to stop legislating like LA and the rest of California is a suburb of Latin America

  • Joan - 14 years ago

This city andi t's elected officials don't have time to take care of City Business for the constitutients that voted them into office but can tell Arizona by boycott what they shoulndn't have dione. Well Janice Hahn, why don't you pay the tab for all the illegals that are here, out of your own bank account, and reimburse the City and County for all the costs that have accrued to date. Your head is you know where and God help us that this councuil, the mayor and all the rest of the downtown pack should be ashamedof yourselves Since you love them somuch move to Mexico!.

  • T. Ramal - 14 years ago

It is interesting how the city politicians find time to devote to Arizona's business while LA city crumbles to bankruptcy & the wait in the ER Center is 35 hours & steadily increases. Maybe LA fathers should make their big move & take advantage of the situation & make the people in Arizona who are now so supposedly uncomfortable an offer that they cant refuse - move to LA & we'll pay your relocation expenses. Ya - right.

  • Gene - 14 years ago

Time to vote out this band of clowns! They damn sure do not represent me or my values!

I want California to follow Arizona's lead and get rid of all the damned illegals who do nothing but bleed our system dry! I am tired of working like a dog just to scrape by while Julio and Jose Illegal get free rides on education, housing, medical care, etc. Our system is BROKEN, and I want it fixed NOW.

Arizona took the first step in the process of solving the problem. Why the hell are these idiots in the LA City Council trying to hamper the process of solving our out-of-control illegal immigration problems?

I am sick and tired of seeing what illegals have done to MY city, MY state and MY country. Get rid of them and the LA City Councilmembers NOW!

This is what we here in LA face every day. Of course, this covers the entire US. WAKE UP IDIOTS!!!!!
It's like you're saying it's ok to come here and break the laws, take our jobs, and bankrupt us, we don't mind and we won't even put you in jail or anything! WHAT A DISASTER we are heading for!

    CRIME FACTS:

Ignoring the "minor crime" such as ID theft and property crimes being committed by illegal aliens, here is a summary on some of the collateral damage reaped in crimes as a result of tolerating illegal aliens in the USA:

    * In Los Angeles, 95% of some 1,500 outstanding warrants for homicides are for illegal aliens. About 67% of the 17,000 outstanding fugitive felony warrants are for illegal aliens.

    * There are currently over 400,000 unaccounted for illegal alien criminals with outstanding deportation orders. At least one fourth of these are hard core criminals.

    * 80,000 to 100,000 illegal aliens who have been convicted of serious crimes are walking the streets. Based on studies they will commit an average of 13 serious crimes per perpetrator.

    * Illegal aliens are involved in criminal activities at a rate that is 2-5 times their representative proportion of the population.

    * In 1980, our Federal and state facilities held fewer than 9,000 criminal aliens but at the end of 2003, approximately 267,000 illegal aliens were incarcerated in U.S. correctional facilities at a cost of about $6.8 billion per year.

    * At least 4.5 million pounds of cocaine with a street value of at least $72 billion is smuggled across the southern border every year. ..

    * 56% of illegal aliens charged with a reentry offense had previously been convicted on at least 5 prior occasions.

    * Illegal aliens charged with unlawful reentry had the most extensive criminal histories. 90% had been previously arrested. Of those with a prior arrest, 50% had been arrested for violent or drug-related felonies.

    * Illegal aliens commit between 700,000 to 1,289,000 or more crimes per year.

    * Illegal aliens commit at least 2,158 murders each year – a number that represents three times greater participation than their proportion of the population.

    * Illegal alien sexual predators commit an estimated 130,909 sexual crimes each year.

    * There may be as many as 240,000 illegal alien sex offenders circulating throughout America. Based on studies, they will commit an average of 8 sex crimes per perpetrator before being caught.

    * Nearly 63% of illegal alien sex offenders had been deported on another offense prior to committing the sex crime.

    * Only 2% of the illegal alien sex offenders in one study had no history of criminal behavior, beyond crossing the border illegally.

    * In Operation Predator, ICE arrested and deported 6,085 illegal alien pedophiles. Some studies suggest each pedophile molests average of 148 children. If so, that could be as many as 900,580 victims.

    * Nobody knows how big the Sex Slave problem is but it is enormous.

    * The very brutal MS-13 gang has over 15,000 members and associates in at least 115 different cliques in 33 states.

    * The overall financial impact of illegal alien crimes is estimated at between $14.4 and $81 billion or more per year. Factor in the crime as a result of the cocaine and other drugs being smuggled in and the number may reach $150 billion per year.

Still think illegal immigration is a "victimless crime" and we don't need to control our borders?

Now we need to fire these morons and get people in here who want to save our state!

  • Diz Pareunia - 14 years ago

Folks, sooner or later you're going to have to make a decision about whether you want to live in Aztlan or not.

  • US Citizen/LA Taxpayer - 14 years ago

People need to stop comparing enforcing US laws that already exist to Nazi Germany or Apartheid or whatever state policy atrocity you can conjure up. Plain and simple, borders need to secured, immigration laws need to be enforced, immigration process needs to be followed and respected, just like they are in every other country in the world.

There is NO excuse for the border jumping and unlawful behavior the Mexican nationals display. They are not fleeing their country, they are coming here to exploit, send their remittance $$ back to Mexico, and basically are the mules for Mexico's 2nd highest GDP (not to mention the never ending drug trade, and no, they aren't just selling to el gringo, they sell to other Mexican nationals that live here). The Mexican government ENCOURAGES them to come here and bring USDs back home instead of setting up programs to take care of their own poor and destitute.

THEY ARE NOT THE US's OBLIGATION. THEY ARE MEXICO'S RESPONSIBILITY. LA, CA, and the US need to drop the hammer on Mexico and proclaim once and for all, "You need to take care of your own people and your own problems and stop sending them over here. We will protect our own, and you need to protect your own and stop leeching off the US!"

So stop with all this bleeding heart "bad Nazi!" BS. If they were a resourceful, productive, innocuous group, there wouldn't be this uproar. But this particular group is needy, boastful, ungrateful, violent, greedy, uneducated (and not interested in education), and extremely ignorant. ... willfully disregarding US laws and customs. They are a menace to a progressive society and take far more than they contribute. They are the reason we need more police on the street; they are creating the dreaded "police state" everyone fears, and people need to recognize and wise up to this fact and support enforcement of our immigration laws before our country is completely reduced to another Mexico.
