We buy what we hear on the radio, so it makes sense that if they play more male artists that is what we buy. If I buy a CD I choose one that has the most hits and if the radio plays more male artist then they would have more hits on their CD's (except the Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift phenomenons- maybe that's why they are)
