Why didn't Jack die in the "Heart of the Island" like Jacob's brother?

I think the fact that when MIB fell in the cave, the light was full power and when Jack went in, he put it back in, turning it on. It's also true that MIB could've died falling to the bottom of the cave. I don't think he died before entering the cave.

because Jack was the magic protector and the MIB wasn't

MIB landed head-first at the bottom of the cave; that probably killed him and then transported his dead body to where jacob found him. Jack was lowered in and alive when the cave was reactivated so his living body was transported to where the MIB was.

It's more simple. By the time Jack went into the cave, the draining system builted by the Egyptians was fully functional. When MIB fell there, there was no water channels to containt or disperse the light. (sorry for my english)

He sprung some sort of trap, set up up by their fake mom.

Jack was in there by choice, not so MIB. Choice, freely-willed act, is a perfection of mind and body, since it is an act of the intellect controlling but also in concert with the material. It's fair to suggest, then, that whereas MIB's consciousness and body were separated, Jack's were not, due to his integration of mind and body in his choice to be there.
