Should the vuvuzela be banned?

No one denied that South Africa might have more culture than the U.S.A. What people are denying is the fact that a cheap plastic horn, brought into existence a few years ago is part of the South African culture. While the pro-vuvuzela camp argues that they add to the atmosphere, it is obvious that they have not experienced a real football game. Yes the games are noisy, but the noise comes from different sources. This vuvuzela crap is creating an uniform noise that cancels out the real atmosphere at a game and that is the rivalry between the supporters. Now everyone, no matter on who they support, no matter on what is going on on the field is blowing into a cheap piece of ... Viewers are annoyed, but more importantly players, who are ultimately the most important factor into creating the atmosphere on the field are annoyed, due to the fact that they can not concentrate, neither can the communicate effectively to one another. If Messi, Ronaldo, Gourcuff, Evira are against the vuvuzela so am I. And again, the vuvuzela is as much part of the South African culture as the snuggie is part of the American one, and none of them has anything to do with culture

Annoying sound. I think FIFA should not have selected SA as a place. Born in a cricket loving country like India, our only exposure to football is WC and many of us eagerly turn on our TVs for that.

Bad experience. Either watch it with Mute on or forget it.

ESPN should probably do a running commentary from their studios , away from the noisy so called traditional Vuvuzelas.

I wish they disallow the vuvuzelas from the 2010 WC matches. Watching the games on TV would be much more enjoyable then. No matter what others say will not change the fact I can't hear much over the noise of the horns.
I prefer to hear the cheers of real people and fans in the background!

I love the vuvuzelas; they bring a more exciting atmosphere to the game in my opinion. And for all you whining babies complaining about the npise, shut the hell up and get use to it! THIS TIME IS AFRICA!

Tsamininaaa eeeh ehhhh Waka Wakaaaa ..eeehhh ehhhhh THIS TIME IS AFRICAAAAAAAAAAAA!

It is terrible to watch the games on our TVs. Please be considerate and do something to stop this really annoying sound!

The buzzing is maybe the most heinous and irritating sound I have ever heard a crowd make, but we have no place to ban it, its their thing if they wanna make a painful noise in their stadiums its their right, and if you cant be cool with that you need to look at yourself in the mirror, because your definitely pissin somebody off somewhere.

I am a Football fan and have attended many matches. I have never heard such a noise as the "plastic horns" but I have heard many other strange chants and air horns .etc at games. If you don't like it don't watch it.
If the sponsors don't like that bad luck. The game is in THEIR country and we as arrogant Americans always try and make everything American. This is beyond wrong and insulting to the rest of the world.

Because USA doesn't like something (even in another country) for a game that is barely part of the culture (if at all) we shouldn't ask that it be changed to fit "our" requirements.

Another reason that well over half the USA have never traveled- we like strip malls and Walmart. And if we dont like what we see then we will complain.

Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing.

Great, lets make sure tv revenues are down because of the bs horns.Africa can afford it.The 1000's of live fans vs. the 1,000,000's of tv and internet fans. Two sponsor's have already pulled out because of low ratings according to nbc .hard to sell soap when everyone has the set turned down.

For those who have been in Football stadiums eg in Europe, Latin America or Africa will know that there are all sorts of noises during a match. If all you do is watch on TV is gonna annoy you. Not so bad for those watching it live as many Asians and Europeans have joined the bandwagon. Go vuvuzela go!

    People are whiners.

@ Bruce "And don't try and use the "its part of the their culture"...BS...if a $7 plastic horn is your culture its obvious you have none to begin with."

You are so ignorant, it's comical. South Africa has more folklore and culture than the USA will ever have. Now, don't start whining... I live in the USA myself and love it here, but what you stated is absolute bullhonkey.
As if the USA doesn't have $7 plastic crap they sell at things like the Superbowl. Hypocritical much?

@BOB "They're fun! I think there is a discrepancy between the viewers at home and those in the stadium. Going to the game is exhilarating and these toy horns are a way of expressing it. In addition fotbul is for every one, and the youth should not only enjoy the game but also the experience."

I COMPLETELY agree. I dare to bet that 80% of the people that are complaining have never even been to a big soccer game and been part of the audience and the atmosphere.

And to be quite honest, if the noise of a "giant bee" bugs you, I don't know how you deal with the noise of every day traffic and such, which is FAR more annoying and has no atmosphere or fun to it, at all.

I grew up in Belgium, I grew up watching and playing soccer and I've NEVER been to a game where there were no kind of horns or other "instruments" used to make loud noises and music to cheer on the teams.

Also, how would you feel if the USA was hosting some kind of soccer tournament and you put your "bands" and "cheerleaders" on the side of the field and people complained? Wouldn't you say it's part of your culture as well and defend it? I think so.

Learn to be a little more accepting of other people's habits and cultures and try to enjoy it, imho.

I think they rock!! IF anyone has watched soccer before they know this is PART of the game. You hear this in every game! It is obvious these peoplel are first time watchers!

  • winner - 14 years ago

VUVUZELAS ARE HERE TO STAY.... whoooooooooohooooooo the noise is part of the game so DEAL with it

  • BOB - 14 years ago

WHAT A BEATING THOSE THINGS ARE!!!!!! Its ruining the viewing experience. Part of the experience of watching the match is hearing the crowd cheer, sing, and all of the other reactions.
Instead all you can hear is that insufferable buzzing which drowns everything else out. Leave your horns, cowbells, clappers, drums, etc at home and rely on your voice to cheer on your team.
And don't try and use the "its part of the their culture"...BS...if a $7 plastic horn is your culture its obvious you have none to begin with.

I feel the same way, if I had bought tickets to the games and had had to put up with all that noise, I would have been more than annoyed... at least this way, I can do the same -- change the channel!

  • Esteban Caudillo - 14 years ago

I didn't know what this was until now. But I was watching a game Saturday, and the buzzing noise was annoying, and I just had to turn the channel to a baseball game, I'd rather be bored than annoyed.
