This proposed tax is stupid. Who gets to spend the tax revenues and on what? Will they make better choices than the people who actually earned the money? Not a chance. Enough of the nanny state.

This is just another example of the Government overstepping there boundaries. This Tax idea is Ridiculous. The Government needs to be reminded that they work for the People of this Great Nation. The Government's pockets are already lined with enough hard earned tax dollars. They have built the Nation on the backs of the Tax payers. Enough with the Taxes.

Arbitrarily taxing things that are "bad for us" is idiotic. Perhaps we should fine the IRS itself for inducing high blood pressure? Enforcing dietary habits on people against their will, either by making things illegal or taxing them is what is ridiculous. If people do not want to make healthy choices, they won't. Just look at cigarette smokers as an example. Cigarettes have an incredibly punitive tax structure attached and you can't smoke them anywhere. Yet, as of 2007, 44 million people in the US smoke (down from 46 million in 2001 - Since 440000 die from smoking related causes every year, that's actually an increase of about 1 million).

I think it's a bad idea to tax sodas! People can make their own decission to switch to a healthier alternative with out a tax! What about the people who already drink diet soda, are they going to be penalized as well? Just rediculous!!

Didn't the previous commenters read the article? Of course it's a good idea--just common sense. Take a look around any mall and see who's carrying around those super-sized sodas. We are one big, fat, unhealthy nation. As for the grandmother who says an occasional soda is a real treat for her grandchildren? Yes, you may have to spend a couple of extra pennies "now and then" if you insist on feeding the kids junk, but please think of the greater good. And maybe it's time to teach those kids about nutrition.

I am a widow raising two granchildren on very, very little money. A soda now and then is a real treat to them. I personally think we have been taxed to the limit. Why don't some of the big wigs refuse some of their raises and give their money back to the little people so we ( the little people ) don't have to keep giving more in taxes. Besides if it's not sodas you'll find something else to tax. And you'll find it before the tax on sodas has even had time to take effect. We're not getting the big bucks like the powerful politicians or corperation exec. tax youselves and leave us alone. BESIDES WHO CAN AFFORD TO EAT AND DRINK HEALTHY, IT'S TAXED TOO MUCH ALSO. ALL WE CAN DO IS DIE, AND THA IS TAXED ALSO.

A sugar tax won't be only on sodas, don't let them fool you into thinking that. It will include iced tea, lemonade and juices. People will drink it; they just won't buy it in the municipalities. They will go to a neighboring area that doesn't have the tax. If they're so worried about bad choices, why not tax other foods that make people FAT ... potato chips, candy and all the other junk food that you see people stuffing their faces with.
