Well said everyone, I will rush out and get an EVO. But wait, I CAN'T. There has not been a SINGLE EVO TO BUY in my area for the last month. It drove me nuts and I bought the first Droid X I could. I blame HTC for lack of supply and Sprint for the idiot way they treat customers by not taking preorders.

    @Earmuffs Well said!

I'm surprised no one said this yet... plain and simple Moto encrypted the boot loader on the Moto Milestone (GSM version of first Moto Droid) I figured they would pull the same BS on Droid X. Not gonna buy into DROID DOES, when clearly Droid does NOT allow you to flash custom ROMs, Droid Does not allow you to use a more affordable carrier, Droid does not allow you to root and remove Verizon garbage bloatware. Droid does not allow you to use WiMax/4g. Droid might block apps that let you use the data plan that you are already paying for via wifi tethering without paying more money.

Decision was simple Moto pulls you cant do what you want with your device after all there Droid does marketing BS. Moto Roids next time come prepared with preparation HTC!

The Evo like any decent HTC already has a following making custom roms is flash able and wifi tethering is a gogo BOOM DECISION OVER. OH PLUS SENSE UI IS BALL TO THE WALLS AWESOME! (admittedly I have never seen motoblur)

Disclaimer: Please no flaming this is my opinion granted a colorful one at that I wrote it in this way for my own entertainment. I pick handsets based on 1. Performance 2. Openness. I choose Android handsets over the iPhone to install whatever apps I want. I choose HTC because I can replace boot-loaders on WinMo and root on Android.
To me openness it the most important feature of any platform. With openness I have freedom to do what I want with my device and I have the assurance that even if the developer goes out of business or stops supporting my device I can still get upgrades/updated software from 3rd party sources. For example odler Android devices that never got official 2.0 updates just got 2.2 courtesy of Cyanogen I belive.

Now a Hard Decision would be Samsung Epic vs HTC EVO

I like the Epic's built in qwerty kb but I actually like the on-screen HTC kb wich is hard to belive coming from a HTC touch to touch pro to TP2 to EVO so I have had a hardware qwerty kb for over a year and it's not the deal breaker for me on this.

plain and simple I want the epic for the better cpu+gpu combo, the amoled screen and the qwerty kb is a plus

I want the HTC EVO Cause:
    - Already have it
    - Love HTC devices
    - Aesthetic
    - HTC Sense UI (not a big deal as I'm sure it can be ported to a rooted device)
    - Micro HDMI port (dont thing the samsung has this, could be the deal breaker)

Really I want the HTC for the Aesthetic and the Samsung for the performance/utility
It's a hard decision I just want that gpu acceleration from the samsung for a boost
in HD decoding if any codec or players come out with gpu acceleration but if there
is no HDMI port ima say eff it and stick with my HTC!

long story short with no root Moto is a Nogo

    because 1GHZ CPU
is also recommended for android 3.0 so
this phone can use this platform

Droid X for the future version for me.

    a) I like Motorola Build quality versus HTC
    b) I have no good reason to leave Verizon and went LTE arrives in the U.S.....it will be a done deal. IMO
    c) I am support US based companies wherever possible
    d) I believe that with FroYo that Droid X will be faster than the EVO and the video being higher res and 24 bit will completely outpace the Evo 4G.
    d) no screen shortages or screen tech. changes are expected on the Motorola gear!

HTC Sense is what tips the scales for me.

** I guess I should have said other Snapdragon-like/1Ghz processors since MOTO doesn't use the Snapdragon.

Disclaimer: I have an EVO. And being on Sprint there was no question I was getting the EVO, I have been following it from the beginning. Now if network were not a consideration I would have to seriously think about it. My EVO rocks! But MOTO makes damn nice hardware. The X has a better screen, noise cancelling mics and more memory. The physical buttons don't matter to me. The only thing I don't like is the hump on the back. It is slim otherwise but I'll need to see it in person. Either way it is the next big thing! Oh and 4G is nice bit 3G is so much faster on my EVO and I expect it will be on the X too like other new Snapdragons. Go Android!

@frizz.......r u f#cking stupid??? the motorola droid is one of the most durable phones out there ...everyone knows htcs phones r all made from cheap plastic thats y theyre so lite

  • John - 14 years ago

The Evo looks too bulky. It looks more like a mini tablet. The Droid X looks slimmer and more like a smartphone.

Motorola has never made a phone strong enough to endure at least a simple drop. Samsung has always to me been the strongest but HTC also has a strong phone as well, it also don't feel cheap like motorola phones.

i choose my EVO, because my phone is future proof. When Verizon launches lte, the Droid x has no 4g radio. Sense UI kicks motoblur butt. Specs r the same, more or less, an sprints plan is cheaper. Once EVO gets froyo and 2.2, watch out.
