I am a Reiki master practicing since 1986 who has been bringing Reiki into hospitals, medical schools, and other conventional health care settings since the mid-1990s. My website www.ReikiInMedicine.org offers many resources to the public and to Reiki students and professionals, including my blog, peer-reviewed medical papers to download and share with physicians and administrators, videos, and excerpts from my book REIKI: A Comprehensive Guide (Tarcher/Penguin).
As a practitioner I also find that receiving Reiki treatments from someone else is also important for my support, in addition to my daily self treatment. I struggled for years to get into a self treatment routine. I now see that the cause of this was resistance to self care. However know I needed to be good at caring for me in order to care for those I give Reiki to.
Please note that the total given is for total votes, not voters, and the percentages are based on that. I know, it is a bizarre approach. The 904 votes as of this time were made by 296 voters. Why Polldaddy doesn't put that information out here where all of you can see it is beyond me.

Thank you for the great information! I appreciate your work and hearing how others share the gift of Reiki. As I have been a Reiki Master for 11 years my practice is always evolving. After being attuned I stepped away from Reiki for afew years because I was very turned off by the judgement, fear, seperation, and limited thinking amoung the Reiki community, I did not want to be involved...Now Reiki is a huge part of my personal and spiritual life. Allthough I recognize the value, I don't do full self-sessions everyday. I feel that the Reiki energy has its own intelligence and goes where it is needed no matter where my hands are. It is not limited by my knowledge of what I need or by my hand placements. When I send distance healing without permission it is "offered" (not forced) with the intention for the highest good of all concerned, and can be rejected. Lastnight I saw that 100 thousand people in China have been evacuated, and 40 thousand are homeless in Brazil...just 2 examples of situations where I cannot personally ask every person but can potentially reach many in need. As I step out of the way and let the Reiki energy do its work, it is not about judging that someone needs fixed against their will, or that I can even do that. Each situation offers it's own unique limitless opportunity for healing, and being in a collective vibration of loving energy. It is also another opportunity for self healing as the energy flows through me, I am filled and healed. You can do it your way. Thankyou for letting me share my experience and what works for me. Namaste.

Done and have done since 2006. Steadily with but with increased dedication since the end of 2009.
My full self practice can vary, however. I follow the muse after initial full head and upper body following the chakras. Somtimes i linger ... somtimes just three minutes per hand placement.
I have a hard time reaching my back but often go to my legs and feet after full head and upper body treatment.
... and then i meditate ;]
It's better than xanax ... but I would love to find someone to share a full treatment with. I need someone else's hands too.
I am very surprised at the number of practitioners not doing self-healing. I am also surprised at the small number of practitioners who feel it is best to receive permission from the receiver before doing a distant Reiki treatment. One wouldn't just run up to someone and place hands on with out permission. How is distant healing any different? I find this troubling.
We need to keep our egos in check. We, as Reiki practitioners, are assistants in the healing process. The healing takes place between Source and the one in need of--and who is reaching out for--healing.

Unfortunately I've been finding that many people act interested in reiki and healing but when offered there's always some excuse as to why they can't/wont do it, this includes practitioners too.
I don't know if this stems from fear of the unknown or not. The group that I practice with are attempting to start a non-profit group related to healing to get the word out. Fingers crossed!!
In my experience, the incredible benefits of Reiki come from practicing it. First with self-treatment, then with treating others. Self-treatment keeps us connected and in the flow...a gift that keeps on giving.
I have done self Reiki & it helps me immensly. I am recently became a single Mom of 3 & doing Reiki on my heart was a huge help. I don't do it daily but should. I know the benefits.

Vickie, I agree that crisis situations are different. I also share Reiki in these situations.
